Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2)

General analysis!

A DROID designed for mechanical repair and data storage. He uses his collection of tools to get out of tight situations.

The two main characters from the DROIDS television series made it to the toy line’s first wave, and both were created from existing Kenner tooling. For Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2), Kenner took 1985’s POTF Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) with pop up Lightsaber, repainted it, and gave it a new label to make it screen-accurate to the character we see in DROIDS. The inclusion of the lightsaber accessory is interesting, but both See-Threepio (C-3PO) and Artoo-Detoo (R2-D) are both indisposed in other adventures to worry about a secured weapon the of Jedi. Kenner did a relatively excellent job translating a realistic R2-D2 action figure from an animated interpretation like this figure. The lines are clean, and the colors are primary and straightforward. Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) comes with only three points of articulation. The action figure couldn’t be simpler in design. The DROIDS action figure line sold poorly at retail, and the animated television series didn’t gain the necessary following. Today, both the action figure and the television series are cult classics. And the action figure of this one-time clearance item now almost reaches four digits on the aftermarket. A core action figure for the DROIDS line, your collection will feel incomplete without it. And if you’re lucky enough to own Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2), you’ll know what a treasure it is in your collection.
