Like all Jedi of his era, Obi-Wan Kenobi was raised in the Jedi Temple from a very young age. He first underwent training with Yoda, before being assigned to Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in his teens.
Both of Hasbro’s 2019 The Black Series [The Phantom Menace 20th Anniversary] 6” figures are also part of the mainstream line, but with some changes. Darth Maul was quickly re-released in the second wave of The Black Series Archive line, and now Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) is part of The Black Series [Phase III] line, but with some glaring omissions. Despite Hasbro showing them in publicity photography, they neglected to include both of the interchangeable hands for Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan). 20th-anniversary will cause an uncontrollable tidal wave of discontent and aggravation. How they neglected to include these two key pieces is not something that fans of the line will easily overlook. These figures are expensive, and when multiple accessories are included with the figures, it makes them more valuable to collectors and helps the expensive price tag feel a little more palatable. Aside from wishing this figure came with a soft-goods robe, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) is another fantastic release in the 6” line. This is a beautiful version of an Episode I Obi-Wan Kenobi, and although it took much too long to get it added to the line, it’s great he’s now available for us to enjoy.
The Phantom Menace is a bittersweet film for many Star Wars fans. Some liken it to fine wine, as they believe Episode I gets better with age. And then there are other fans who are unable to get behind the film for one reason or another. Whatever your lot, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is 20 years old as of May 2019, and it’s worthy of some commemoration regardless of how you feel about the film or the characters in it. While most fans adore Darth Maul, it’s more difficult to come up with the next “most favorite” character after him. But we believe Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) was the next best figure Hasbro could release to pay homage to this two-decade-old film. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) is a perfect recreation of the 1999 Episode I CommTech figure. And now the 20th-anniversary figure has been repacked for inclusion in The Black Series [Phase III] 6” line look. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) is a beautiful action figure. If you recall, Jedi Temple Archives broke the news that this figure was an upcoming release in The Black Series 6” line nearly two years ago, and now Hasbro decided it would be best to introduce the figure into the line as a convention exclusive for anniversary purposes.
With a faithful likeness to actor Ewan McGregor, Hasbro’s “photorealistic” technology has come so far in such a short amount of time, and this figure proves that. The beautifully applied paint operations give Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) an incredibly realistic look and faithfully recreates the character in 6” scale. We’re also impressed with the figure’s hair and braid. It’s quite a feat to capture all of the character’s details without issue, yet Hasbro did so effortlessly here. Hasbro designed the rest of the figure beautifully as well. With a mostly off-white Jedi Knight outfit and dark cordovan leather boots, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) captures every last detail of the onscreen character. Fans of the 6” line will be thrilled with this action figure. And it was wise to carry him forward into the black and red TBS6 line to help make him more widely available. With a standard articulation system as most other 6” figures, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) has fluid movement and contains a wealth of poses. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan) comes poorly accessorized. He only comes with the lightsaber which breaks down into a hilt and blade, but they omitted the interchangeable hands, which is completely unacceptable.
