On the planet Tatooine, the Mos Eisley Cantina, also known as Chalmun's Cantina, is the hot spot for entertainment and intrigue. Many species intermingle there, spying and conducting shady business. Bounty hunters frequent the seedy joint, hoping to catch their prey in an unguarded moment. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker went to the cantina to find transportation off the planet, which led to their first meeting with Han Solo.

The mad Dr. Evazan causes terror throughout the galaxy with his "creative surgery." His face was horribly disfigured while escaping from a bounty hunter. When he's not operating on hapless victims, he and his partner Ponda Baba run a smuggling business. He was wounded in the Mos Eisley cantina after he threatened Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi came to the boy's defense.

When Kenner/Hasbro released the Walmart exclusive The Power Of The Force “2” [Green/Freeze Frame] Cantina Showdown Cinema Scene set, collectors went bonkers. We collectively sat in awe that Kenner/Hasbro finally gave us Ponda Baba’s partner in crime, Dr. Cornelius Evazan. Sadly, the Dr. Evazan figure featured in that Cinema Scenes set came with an action pose and was very limited in how you could pose him in a display. For years it was the only version of Dr. Evazan collectors had, and the figure aged quickly to the point of obsoletion. When the second wave of Walmart exclusive Cantina Bar Section sets was announced, collectors leaped for joy because it meant that Hasbro was refreshing the Dr. Evazan action figure to be more generic and more articulation for various interactions in Chalmun’s Cantina. Although canceled, a few of the Dr. Evazan set (and the others) made it out of the Asian warehouses and were picked up by various online retailers. Many collectors managed to score a set of the canceled wave 2 figures, but they sold out quickly.

Hasbro still utilized many parts from the Cinema Scenes Dr. Evazan figure. The torso, head, and arms are all reused, and the legs are all-new. But most importantly, Hasbro completely repainted Dr. Evazan and he’s never looked better. The expression on his face is perfect, and it captures the ager the character possessed while interacting with Luke Skywalker in the cantina. Dr. Evazan is a tremendous upgrade to its predecessor, and collectors will quickly “throw out” the 1997 previous version in favor of this one. The all-new legs allow Dr. Evazan to sit at any of the available barstools provided in the Cantina Bar Section pieces. And the back of the figure’ packaging can be cut out with scissors and displayed in the “gutter” of the back of the Cantina Bar Section. The backdrops are simple and won’t hold up over time because they’re made out of paper, but they do provide a nice section of detail to the display. Dr. Evazan also comes with three bar glasses and his blaster. The blaster is oversized and looks a bit out of place, but it’s essential to this character.

Hasbro announced in the summer of 2004, just a couple of months after online retailers began selling these sets on the aftermarket, that all three “canceled” figures would be packaged together and released as a Kmart exclusive in The Original Trilogy Collection. Hasbro was smart to put together the Kmart exclusives because many collectors missed out on these figures in the Star Wars “Saga” packaging. Even though Hasbro significantly refreshed Dr. Evazan for the Star Wars line, collectors are still hoping that they’ll revisit the character in action figure form from the ground up one day. He is an important character to Luke’s story and Star Wars in general, so he deserves and all-new updated sculpt. (Editor’s Note: Hasbro released 2012’s TVC Dr. Evazan (Cantina Patron) (VC57) and it meets definitive status for almost all collectors.) With Ponda Baba refreshed in the Cantina Bar Section line and now Dr. Evazan, collectors are slowly but surely building up the cast of characters needed to fill a Chalmun’s Cantina diorama. It’s quite interesting that Hasbro thought it would be a good idea to repackaging them all together and give them a second chance. But we're glad they did.
