A generation before Star Wars: A New Hope...
In a galaxy far, far away, an evil force is gaining strength and threatens an entire civilization. Two courageous Jedi, a young queen, a Gungan outcast, and a slave boy named Anakin band together to save a planet under attack as the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance.

Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi senses a dark presence on the planet of Naboo. Soon, he discovers that the Trade Federation has a nefarious plot in the works and plans to invade the planet. Alongside his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, as well as Queen Padme Amidala, and the Gungan army, Obi-Wan returns to Naboo to defend against the Federation's attacks. As the invasion of Naboo rages outside, Obi-Wan Kenobi battles the evil Sith Lord, Darth Maul, in a fierce lightsaber duel. Darth Maul is an accomplished warrior, but Obi-Wan is guided by the Force and a deep bond with his Master. The red and blue lightsaber blades clash in a battle that could change the galaxy forever!

We have to hand it to Hasbro. They picked the best way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace. We’re speaking from a Star Wars collector’s perspective here of course, but is there anything better than recreated and replicated “vintage” Hasbro Episode I packaging for the 6” The Black Series line? Although disappointed that Hasbro relegated them to Star Wars Celebration Chicago exclusives, we believe that collectors will greatly appreciate Hasbro’s efforts here and find ways to add these beautiful figures into their collections. The Phantom Menace is a bittersweet film for many Star Wars fans. Some liken it to fine wine as they feel Episode I gets better with age. And then there are other fans that are unable to get behind the film for one reason or another. Whatever your lot, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is 20 years old as of May 2019, and it’s worthy of some commemoration regardless of how you feel about the film or the characters in it. While most fans adore Darth Maul, it’s more difficult to come up with the next “most favorite” character after him. But we feel that Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) was the next best figure Hasbro could release to pay homage to this two-decade old film. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) is a perfect recreation of the 1999 Episode I CommTech figure. It only lacks a 6” scaled CommTech chip. And of course, we aren’t serious about that inclusion here.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) is a beautiful all-new action figure. Jedi Temple Archives broke the news that this figure was an upcoming release in The Black Series 6” line nearly two years ago, and now Hasbro decided it would be best to introduce the figure into the line as a convention exclusive. Fear not, however, as Obi-Wan Kenobi is also part of The Black Series [Phase III] 6” basic figure line as well. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) has a stunning portrait. A faithful likeness to actor Ewan McGregor, Hasbro’s “photorealistic” technology has come so far in such a short amount of time. The beautifully applied paint operations give Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) an incredibly realistic look and faithfully recreates the character in 6” scale. We’re also impressed with the figure’s hair and braid. It’s quite a feat to capture all of the character’s details without issue, yet Hasbro did so effortlessly here. Hasbro designed the rest of the figure beautifully as well. With a mostly off-white Jedi Knight outfit and dark cordovan leather boots, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) captures every last detail of the onscreen character. Fans of the 6” line are going to be thrilled with this action figure. And the fact that it’s housed in recreated Episode I packaging nails everything together perfectly. With a standard articulation system as most other 6” figures, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) has fluid movement and can contain a wealth of poses.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) comes modestly accessorized. He comes with his signature lightsaber which breaks down into a hilt and blade. Hasbro recently (and disappointingly) changed their approach for designing the removable blades. Now they attach the blade to the hilt with a tiny plug (which is very similar to the lightsaber blades of metal hilts of the Star Wars “Saga” figures from 2002-2004). We’re concerned that breakage might occur over time with constant removing and replacing the blade time and again. We’ll have to see how well that holds up over time. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel) also comes with an interchangeable left hand and interchangeable right hand. The left hand features two outstretched pointing fingers, also like he’s using the Force. His right hand is a bit more perplexing. We’re drawing a blank at the moment what the hand gesture is intended to recreate, but it looks like it’s making an “A-OK” type of expression. We might be incorrect about that, but that’s what it looks like to us. The lightsaber hilt features a plug which fits beautifully into the hold featured on the figure’s belt. We would have loved to see a soft-goods robe added here as Hasbro did for Mace Windu, but for one reason or another Hasbro decided against it. Either way, this is a beautiful version of Episode I Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Duel). It was a long time coming, but the wait has been worth it.
