An artist and a rebel, she uses her explosive creativity to fight the Empire!
The first wave of Forces Of Destiny figures are split across three different formats. The goal of the different formats is to provide certain characters from the series with objects or things that they utilize within these animated shorts. Hence, Hasbro has felt the need to divide the line into three conceptual approaches to ensure each character is portrayed as accurately as possible based on their appearances in the series. Probably one of the most awaited characters in this line is Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian bounty hunter who has a strong following from her main role in Star Wars: Rebels. She falls under the “Basic Figure” category. In short, she doesn’t come with “anything else” other than her direct weapons and standard outfit. This simpler approach works well and she may be the best candidate for the simplest format in the Forces Of Destiny line. Forces Of Destiny’s delivery has honestly exceeded our expectations. This Sabine Wren figure is like the 12" figure we never received from Hasbro.... until now. Save for the head sculpt, this figure makes us wish Hasbro was making well-articulated one-sixth scale figures again. The figures in this line meet all the definitions of a young girl’s age group: rooted hair, interchangeable clothing, cutesy “animal” accessories and mixed media to give the dolls a life of their own for little girls to create their own adventures. Hasbro’s use of soft-goods clothing as well as molded plastic parts are seamless and create the perfect toy/collectible for what we’re sure will appeal in some way to Star Wars fans from both genders and all ages. Eleven inches in scale and full of articulation and fine workmanship, Forces Of Destiny gives us hope that young female Star Wars fans may have a new interest with collecting. It’s definitely here in Forces Of Destiny.
As mentioned earlier, Sabine Wren falls into the Forces Of Destiny Basic Figure line and retails for $19.99. She is perhaps the most colorful of all the dolls in the first wave and she really looks great. Her costume/outfit isn’t as detailed as her Rebels appearance, but Hasbro did give the Forces Of Destiny figure massive amounts of bright color to help make up for the loss of detail. Her standout feature is her removable helmet. It looks amazing. It’s properly scaled, is beautifully painted and is completely functional. She looks great with or without it, something you would expect for this line. We’ve already found her hair styled in different ways: one hairstyle looking hairdryer blown, the other more slicked, shinier and close to her head. There may have been a running change, but it’s hard to tell the look that Hasbro was going for here. Young fans will be able to recreate her adventures from Star Wars: Rebels as well as her new adventures seen in Forces Of Destiny. These figures have been varying a bit when it comes to articulation, but Sabine Wren comes with 20 points of articulation. There is premium articulation in the upper body mostly. But you will find other places with ball-jointed articulation like the knees for example. All dolls tend to look like one another, as they all have the caricatured shapes and features that are common with all of them in the animated shorts. Sabine Wren is really no exception. At the same time, they all possess uniqueness between each other, even beyond their outfits and accessories. In our opinion, we feel that Sabine Wren’s skin tone is much too dark when compared to her Rebels AND Forces Of Destiny appearances. An effort was clearly made to make her resemble the voice actress who portrays her, so maybe that the intention of the darker skin. Either way, Sabine Wren still looks great.
Whether fully assembled or minimally accessorized, the Forces Of Destiny Sabine Wren is an asset to the collection. It’s our honest opinion that Hasbro really went above and beyond with this line. Maybe this isn’t the latest thing, but fine details, like “spraying” the rooted hair to keep the style in place is just one of the things we like to see in these types of dolls. Maybe the colorfully detailer wide-eyed expressions can be a bit overwhelming, but keep in mind that Hasbro is trying to appeal to a certain market while they have a multimedia event to support their product line. And again just to reiterate, we absolutely love the mix of molded plastic costuming paired with removable soft-goods. It works better than we had ever anticipated it would. Sabine Wren should be destined to become a hit with a new younger female audience, but we’re sure she has plenty of male fans too. We just don’t know if a doll line is going to interest them much. The outfits are sewn with precision and are fitted, and the accessories interact with the figures beautifully, with truly seamless interaction. Because of this we believe Hasbro has approached this line with great forethought and care. The paint operations only seal the deal here as they look marvelous and have no overspray or errors. If we had one complaint about the first wave of figures, it’s the character selection. Now, we also understand that Hasbro is also working as closely as possible to the confines of the animated series. This makes it clear why certain figures are going to be made before others. Sabine Wren was a wise and safe choice for the opening Forces Of Destiny figures. Some people aren’t too crazy about her in Rebels, but her character was certainly more tolerable in Forces Of Destiny. Hopefully she will perform well at retail regardless.
