Who would have imagined that the most aggressively articulated action figure in The Power Of The Force “2” line would come in the form of a 1997 exclusive. The long-awaited Bith Cantina Band Member has been an action figure we have wanted since the vintage Kenner era. In fact, if you owned the Cantina Action Playset from 1979, the closest we got the them was basically a cardboard mural of the band as a backdrop for the cantina aliens Kenner DID make. Well, here we are almost 10 years later and now we have them in plastic form. Advertised very murkily, Kenner tried to explain that we didn’t need to order more than one figure to get all of the instruments. Each Bith Cantina Band Member did come with five unique instruments, but common sense didn’t necessarily dictate at the time that we would need to buy five action figures to complete the band, and even then we couldn’t technically complete the band. After all, there are six or seven band members (depending upon which source you accept as truth).

The Cantina Band Member was available exclusively through the Fan Club via Star Wars Insider magazine. They limited collectors to five figures and believe it or not most of us maxed out our orders. How could anyone just order one? And as stated above, each figure came with the same five different instruments. If you bought five figures, then you could uniquely display all five instruments with the five figures purchased. And also as we’ve mentioned, while each figure came with five different musical instruments, there are actually six Cantina Band Members in the Modal Nodes. Figrin D'an is the official band leader and band plays the kloo horn. Doikk Na'ts plays the dorenian beshniquel which is actually commonly called the fizz. Ickabel G'ont plays the fanfar. Tedn Dahai is another member who also plays the fanfar player. Tech Mo'r sits down to play the omni box. And Nalan Cheel plays the bandfill. According to the Expanded Universe, a seventh member, named Lirin Car'n, only is with the band from time to time, plays the kloo horn. Obviously at best, you’re going to be one band member short: Doikk Na’ts as no dorenian beshniquel is included here.

While the Cantina Band Member has a slightly awkward pose, he has little to no trouble standing up. We would have loved to see more leg articulation, and some ball-jointed articulation in the upper body would have done this action figure a world of good. Cantina Band Member comes with an impressive ten points of articulation. The addition of hinge-jointed elbows and swivel wrists assist the collector in making the action figure hold all five respective instruments. While some instruments are easier to hold than others, all will stay in place with a little bit of patience. In addition to the five instruments, Cantina Band Member comes with a removable shirt shell. We’re a little surprised that Kenner tooled a separate and removable piece of clothing. They could have easily tooled this as part of the figure and it was in all honesty unnecessary. In fact, we’ve heard from others that they actually prefer the Cantina Band Member without the removable shirt shell. We think both options look great. Keep in mind, the Cantina Band Member is an expensive action figure for what you get. Sure, six accessories in total are great, but we think the enhanced articulation is affecting the cost here. It’s still a fun figure despite this.
