The Ewok named Wicket was the first of his clan to find Princess Leia after she crashed a speeder bike in the dense woods of Endor. Their friendship allied the Ewoks and Rebels so that together they could help defeat the evil Empire!

It was sensory overload to receive so many Princess Leia action figures at once. But what was perhaps more overwhelming was to get two interpretations of the same outfit of Princess Leia at once. 1998 was a huge year for Star Wars collectors. The “pack-in premium” was brought back in the form of awesome Freeze Frame action slides and the character selection was the broadest it had ever been to date. With a ton of obscure and background characters peppered in with major heroes and villains provided the collecting community with a wealth of Star Wars goodness, and sub-lines like the Princess Leia Collection and Cinema Scenes brought even more great characters at a breakneck pace to Star Wars collectors. We digress. In 1998, Kenner released two distinct versions of Princess Leia in her infamous Ewok village threads. One, a basic figure release was larger and technically more screen accurate, and the other was packed with Wicket The Ewok and came with soft-goods, heavy makeup and was colored in a way that was intended to appeal to young girls.

This may sound ridiculous, but the Princess Leia Collection version is technically the better figure. She is more appropriately scaled, has more delicate and feminine features and surprisingly has soft-goods that work very, very well. The Freeze Frame Princess Leia Organa (In Ewok Celebration Outfit) is much too large and doesn’t have that great of a likeness. And she even has a stranger pose which make standing her up nearly impossible. Sadly, the Freeze Frame version has much better coloring and screen accuracy in that regard. If Kenner can find a way to repaint the Princess Leia Collection version with significant screen accuracy, collectors may be treated to a relatively flawless action figure of this character. We even like the soft-goods hair that has been added to Princess Leia. It just seems to work so much better than the solid molded hairpiece that graces the Freeze Frame version. The skirt is removable and underneath Kenner has painted a very “doll like underwear” outfit underneath of the soft-goods. It all works.

Packed with Princess Leia is Wicket The Ewok. It is the same exact figure that is part of 1998’s POTF2 [FF/TKC] Ewoks: Wicket & Logray two-pack in the Freeze Frame line. With little to no differences in the paint operations, it is probably very accurate to say that this figure is a straight repack/prepack of the Freeze Frame version. Wicket The Ewok comes with five points of articulation which include a swivel head, two swivel shoulders and two swivel hips. The head is difficult to articulate, but it is possible. And with the little bit of movement these joints provide, Wicket The Ewok really can’t be posed in a variety of ways. His orange colored cowl is removable and he comes with a spear that is about twice as long as he is. The likeness isn’t perfect, but you do see a sort of resemblance with the beloved Ewok seen in Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. Overall, this is a delightful set and gives us two characters that we’ve wanted to see in the basic figure line for a very long time. Now we have multiple options for the same characters.
