HEIGHT: 1.8 meters
STATUS: Bounty Hunter
CLASSIFICATION: Human
AFFILIATION: Freelance
WEAPON OF CHOICE: Mandalorian Battle Armor and Various Blasters

The most notorious and fearsome bounty hunter in the galaxy is also the most mysterious. Many legends and stories have arisen over the years, but few facts are known of the man called Boba Fett, or his link to Han Solo's past. Since the Clone Wars, Fett has worked as a mercenary, a soldier, a personal guard, an assassin, and most frequently, as the most expensive bounty hunter in the known systems.

Fett wears the armor of the Mandalore supercommandos, a group of evil warriors who were defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars. Fett had it modified to fit his needs as a bounty hunter. His helmet has a macrobinocular viewplate, motion and sound sensors, infrared capabilities, an internal comlink with his ship, the Slave I, and a broadband antenna for intercepting and decoding transmissions. His wrist gauntlets house lasers, a miniature flame projector, and a fibercord whip/grappling device. On his back, a powerful jet pack also houses a turbo-projected magnetic grappling hook with a 20 meter lanyard. Worn over his dirty flightsuit, Fett's equipment includes knee-pad rocket rocket dart launchers, spiked boots, and a concussion grenade. Braided Wookiee scalps hang over his right shoulder, and a BlasTech EE-3 rifle makes sure no one argues with him. Fearless, methodical, and as unpredictable as the shifting sands of Tatooine, Fett has worked for numerous ganglords, including Jabba the Hutt. He was working for Jabba when a call for bounty hunters was received from the Empire, Fett tracked down his old nemesis, Han Solo, for Darth Vader, and was rewarded with the smuggler's body, frozen in carbonite.

Probably the most anticipated action figure once The Power Of The Force “2” line was announced was Boba Fett. Although not part of the first wave, Star Wars fans and collectors were chomping at the bit for a modern release of everyone’s favorite bounty hunter. Thankfully Kenner/Hasbro made him a priority. The figure was finally released just in time for Christmas of 1995, but many collectors had to wait until the beginning of 1996 before he became a little more plentiful on store shelves. Not based on any movie version of Boba Fett, this action figure mirrored the original vintage Kenner figure by having features and colors that were more like the prototype costume than the actual costume utilized in The Empire Strikes Back. As a result, this Boba Fett is technically an Expanded Universe interpretation of the onscreen character. The telltale signs are the black circles on the gloves. But perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves because these “black circles” certainly didn’t start that way. Pretty much right out of the gate, Boba Fett had a variation, and it became one of the most sought after in the entire The Power Of The Force “2” line. Originally released with what the collecting community referred to as “half-circle” gloves, a running change was quickly put into production to “correct” them to the “full circles” as seen on the prototype costume.

Boba Fett changed the way Star Wars collectors looked and subsequently expected figures from Hasbro. And Boba Fett wasn’t an action figure any of us should have taken for granted or even lightly for that matter. Some of the more exceptional details that set action figure making to unprecedented levels include the follwing: a three-dimensional rangefinder, battle-damaged markings, multi-color paint operations, and multiple accessories. Boba Fett comes with a removable jetpack and a movie-accurate sawed-off blaster rifle. The cleverly designed slot for the jetpack to attach to the figure worked better than expected and provided some unexpected additional play value to a figure that would likely be the “go-to” figure in any collection. It was securely attached to the figure without any fear of it falling off of him if you looked at it funnily. Although Boba Fett suffered from bulky and beefy proportions, it was almost easy to forgive this setback in favor of what the action figure brought to the basic figure line. Aside from the bulkiness in the body frame, a little more articulation would have behooved it tremendously. Kenner/Hasbro should be taking “risks” by including extra articulation for characters that need it. We don’t need a funky pose. We need articulation to make these action figures be all that they can be.

A lesser-known variation with Boba Fett is the molding of the right hand. Kenner/Hasbro sculpted initial (and most) releases in a circular fashion where the thumb was attached to the rest of the hand. But with subsequent releases, the thumb was unattached to give the collector more flexibility so that the weapon was easier to position within the hand. Similar issues occurred with other figures in the line as well. Boba Fett has a decent center of gravity, although the jetpack makes the figure top-heavy to the point of falling backward. You have to pose him leaning forward to counteract this gravitational pull. Sadly, Boba Fett doesn’t look natural in this position. It certainly isn’t a deal-breaker by any means, however. There has been too much progress made with this action figure. And we have great expectations for what the future of the line will bring (just based on the few enhancements made with Boba Fett). He is a minor character in the Star Wars films but has a major cult following. And anything that Kenner/Hasbro does that involves an action figure of him will always be a hit. We still find it particularly interesting that Kenner/Hasbro decided to bring the “Proto Fett” version of the character into the basic figure line. It seems that an Episode V version would have made the most sense! No matter your opinion, it's an interesting update to the 1979 SW Boba Fett figure!
