Well, well, well. There seems to be as many enhancements as there are setbacks when it comes to the Saga Legends line. At three waves Hasbro has added a little more functionality and interaction with the sculpts, eliminated characters bios on the packaging, and cluttered the card back with so many languages you can barely find English printed anywhere on it. There is no denying the sculpts are very nice. Sure, it’s a huge disappointment for lovers of super articulation, but to discount the incredibly accurate and proportionate sculpts Hasbro’s designers are making for this line would be egregious at best. Hasbro has come a long away. Remember how the rabid Chewbacca and caterpillar eyebrow Han Solo Mission Series two-pack from the previous line look? Those nightmare figures can’t hold a candle to the improved figures Hasbro is making now. At first glance, you might be misled to believe that Han Solo (in his Bespin outfit) utilizes some of the tooling of that earlier Han Solo figure. Perhaps some of the tooling blueprints were reused for the legs, but the ultimate ruling is that Han Solo (SL24) is an all-new figure. You should be thrilled it is.

This collector favorite take on Han Solo seems like a natural mainstay for any basic figure line. Surprisingly Hasbro started from the ground up to produce a simply articulated version of him to fit into the standards of today. We’re about as impressed as we are sadly disappointed. The head sculpt is about average and the tooling for the rest of the body borders on excellent. But the real bone to pick here once again are the paint operations. Hasbro attempted to give Han Solo blue/green eyes. But they’re so sloppily decorated that it looks like he has crazy eyes. The rest of the uniform is painted nicely, but his skin tone is too pink. What’s worse is there is a spot where his neck/chest shows in the torso section of the action figure. They painted this flesh tone in a color that is too dark and doesn’t match the hands or head. It’s a total debacle. As far as enhancements to the figure, Hasbro added a functioning holster to Han Solo. The pistol fits into it very loosely. You can really only “place” it in there, as it moves/wobbles around quite a bit if you bump or move the action figure. The gesture is appreciated, but they could have fine-tuned it a little more so the gun fits tightly in place.

The basics of this figure look great however. The brown pants with yellow blood stripe and complementary black leather boots look amazing. And let’s not forget his bleached white shirt underneath his navy blue jacket. Even the belt buckle is colored in a very nice silver shade of paint. As you can see, there is a lot to appreciate here. If this figure was painted with some dignity it might appeal to a much larger group of collectors. But this is certainly not the case here. We are really beginning to wonder what the long term plans are for the Saga Legends and Mission Series lines. Will the Star Wars mainstream line be like this from here on out? Why else would Hasbro be reinventing the wheel in this manner? We have all of these characters in different sculpts multiple times. And most have significantly better articulation and paint jobs. When you think of it in this light, the Saga Legends and Mission Series lines almost serve no purpose. (We’re strictly talking about rehashes and not the new Rebels characters here.) This Han Solo figure does help to clarify, however, why less articulation can be better for the aesthetics of an action figure. There is no way this figure is better than say 2011’s TVC Han Solo (Bespin Outfit) (VC50) figure, but you can see if the original modern line had come this way right from the start, the line might be in a totally different spot than it is in today.
