When Darth Vader recruited six of the most elite bounty hunters in the galaxy to track down the Millennium Falcon, one of those hunters was Bossk. This reptilian Trandoshan has a well-deserved reputation as a highly skilled tracker unencumbered by scruples or even a thread of decency. After all, he acquired part of his powerful reputation by killing and eating his own father. His species is able to re-grow lost limbs, adding to his already considerable aura of invincibility. Bossk sees his ruthless and cold-hearted hunts as an elementary function of his professional vocation. But he also considers them a step toward everlasting glory, for one of the major deities in his religion lavishly rewards successful hunts in the afterlife. His desire to find the Falcon was not only for the bounty being offered; Bossk hungered for the opportunity to capture Chewbacca and add another Wookiee's pelt to his collection.
The metamorphosis of the Hasbro line has been growing successfully steady with each new line look. Action figure proportions get better and better and so do likenesses, sculpt sand paint operations. By the time we all reached the Star Wars “Saga” era, action figures were at an all time high, not taking into consideration those that came with action features. Kids and collectors toys were equally mixed under one banner. But there was a new energy and excitement for the 3.75” scale line. In fact, it was nearly palpable. Hasbro, deciding to boldly move ahead in a different direction based on the momentum of their recent successes decided to jump into a new scale of “action” figures. This time however they were designed for those who best fit into the Generation Y category of Star Wars collectors. What Hasbro wasn’t prepared for however was that this new large scale of Star Wars figures were rabidly embraced by longtime collectors looking to change up their 3.75” buying habits. The Unleashed line was born and quickly became an instant classic sub-line. It was so popular that Hasbro couldn’t keep up with the production of the line. Some of the greatest sculpts period from Hasbro are from the warmly embraced seven-inch scaled Star Wars: Unleashed line. It’s a line that hasn’t disappointed collectors and it seems that there aren’t enough characters Hasbro could bring into this scale. One figure in particular, Bossk, strikes a chord with us intensely. And it’s one of our favorites to date.
Keeping in mind that the Star Wars: Unleashed line is intended to bring the most popular characters from the Star Wars universe to collectors in a very aggressive way, Bossk couldn’t be more appropriate. Some of the characters in this line are inspired from scene specific moments in the Star Wars films, but Bossk? Not so much. If we were to be creative, we would source this version of Bossk to events surrounding Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi over events around Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Our logic? Look at this figure. It looks like Bossk just escaped certain death by narrowly escaping from an exploding Sail Barge. Even if he isn’t perched upon some of the Khetanna’s remains, we’d like to plead ignorance and pretend otherwise. But honestly inspect this figure from top to bottom. Is this not the greatest plastic interpretation of Bossk you have ever witnessed? He looks pissed off and he looks like he’s more than had it with the Rebels. What’s more, he even has some “blood” on his hands which make us believe that he was recently injured from an “explosion” or something similar. While some Unleashed figures come with articulation, Bossk come without any. That’s alright though because this is meant to be displayed on a shelf and what a stunning display piece it is indeed. The Bossk Unleashed figure captures all of the intensity and energy of the character we never got see in the Star Wars films. This is how you want to think of him.
So you know that Bossk is a pretty exaggerated take on the popular bounty hunter. But what about the sculpt? Simply put, Bossk’s sculpt is divine. If only we could get our action figures to look this good. Designed in perfect seven-inch scale, the sculptors at Hasbro pulled out all the stops to develop a jaw-dropping, knee-buckling and teeth-chattering action figure experience for the purchaser of this beautiful toy. At $14.99, you’re getting a great deal of plastic for the price. But even if these were smaller scaled than they actually are, you would not be able to deny the level of artistry that has been placed into each and every one of these fine figures, especially Bossk. With an absolutely threatening demeanor, Bossk is crouched atop a portion of “something” which is curved and has plenty of damage itself. He is wielding his signature blaster rifle and he is ready to take on anyone else jeopardizing his safety. The Unleashed Bossk figure comes apart into two separate pieces, essentially the Bossk figure by itself and the “display stand”. The glorious paint job this figure and its base are amazing. It seems that Hasbro was undaunted by the task of adding a full color palette to this incredible sculpt, and that’s exactly what was executed here. We have to be honest and express we have a major affinity for Bossk, but this Unleashed version of him has superseded our expectations. We are thrilled with how he turned out and he should be a centerpiece in your Unleashed collections.
