Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) - POTJ - Basic

Luke first gets behind the controls of an X-wing fighter in the Battle of Yavin. Using the Force in the attack against the Death Star, Luke takes a critical shot at the Battle Station's reactor core. Yavin was a victory for the Rebel Alliance, and established Luke as one of the greatest starfighter pilots in the galaxy!

Did it really take Hasbro six years to give collectors their first modern interpretation of Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot)? You may recall that a similarly looking figure was one of the first dozen figures made in the modern Kenner/Hasbro line. And the figure was even entitled Luke Skywalker (In X-wing Fighter Pilot Gear), but that was a misnomer. It was actually Luke Skywalker in snowspeeder pilot gear instead. And for years Hasbro utilized this figure to be the “X-wing Pilot” version of him erroneously. Thankfully all that has finally changed and Hasbro built a screen accurate and scale accurate interpretation of Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) from the ground up. And the figure actually looks pretty good. As evidenced by the black boots and black gloves as well as a more fitted and streamlined flight suit, Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) from the Power Of The Jedi line is a long-awaited figure that has perplexed collectors for years on why he wasn’t updated sooner. Everything works out for the best anyway, because Hasbro revisited scale halfway into the Power Of The Jedi line, and because they made us wait, they’ve crafted a Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) figure that will age less quickly. This is of course a great thing.

The likeness of Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) is pretty good. The facial structure is almost there, but because they gave him two front buck teeth, he is looking a little more mousey than he should. The color of his eyes and hair look great and the expression of wariness makes sense as he is confronting the Galactic Empire for the first time ever during the Battle of Yavin. The proportions of his body are essentially perfect. Luke has a smaller stature than most other figures in the Power Of The Jedi line and his orange flight suit is close-fitting without appearing skin-tight. His pose is a little bit odd. It looks like he is in mid stride (a little bit) and his hands are strangely a little too open to look relaxed and natural in our opinion. The details of the costume are really nice. The black portions are shiny and the orange flight suit is dull. Hasbro even managed to sculpt a “three-dimensional” hose on his posterior coming out from the white bib of the outfit. it looks fantastic. The chest box looks good and the paint operations are relatively clean and definitely screen accurate. There really isn’t much to complain about here as far as sloppiness or inaccuracies are concerned. We’re pleasantly surprised.

Sadly, Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) is lightly accessorized. He only comes with a removable helmet. But before we’re “dog” the figure for not coming with enough stuff, let us first praise Hasbro for what they did with the removable helmet. It’s simply gorgeous. It’s well designed although some may criticize it for being too narrow. (But that’s because Luke’s head is narrow.) It fits like a glove on his head and it looks fantastic when placed on the figure. What’s more, Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) can hold it in his hands, albeit a little too precariously for our liking. The paint operations Hasbro gave to the helmet are astounding. it may be a little to dark and dirty, but you will be amazed with the level of detail they included here. Honestly, it’s a little tiny work of art. We are thoroughly impressed. Technology is growing at a rapid rate and there is no doubt Hasbro will continue to make action figures better and better with time, but this is a great action figure for the time being. Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) certainly has limited articulation and pales in comparison with other figures in the Power Of The Jedi line with more impressive types of articulation added to them, but we still are unable to knock it because it truly looks great. But you’ll have to be the final judge of that.
