The biggest surprise of the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line was the Gamorrean Guard Premier Guild Member exclusive released in 2013 which not only was placed on a The Power Of The Force card back, but also came with a real metal coin. Because of this, collector of this line knew that more The Power Of The Force figures (and more coins) were inevitable, although the next announcement packaged with these features would be months away from the release of the Gamorrean Guard. But with a surprise announcement of a character that pretty much defines rarity in Star Wars collecting, Gentle Giant Ltd. revealed that Yak Face would indeed be the next Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figure packed with a coin and on a The Power Of The Force card back. Relegated to a 2013 San Diego Comic Con exclusive, Yak Face is gorgeously manufactured to be one of the premium action figures in this line. In overwhelming 12” scale, Yak Face is a real treat for the eyes, and those that have come to adore the up-scaled versions of the original Kenner figures.

Yak Face may have the notoriety of being one of the hardest original Kenner figures to obtain which would make you think that Star Wars licensees would be breaking out this character left and right in multiple collectible formats. But it’s been anything but that case it seems. Other than the original 1985 international figure, Yak Face has only been released as a basic figure in 1997’s The Power Of The Force [2] line, as a 2009 Gentle Giant Ltd. Mini Bust and now as a Gentle Giant Ltd. Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figure. (At least Gentle Giant is well aware of the power that this character has for Star Wars collectors. We wish we could say the same about Hasbro.) So getting a collectible release of Saelt Marae, or whatever name you want to call him, is very refreshing and totally special. As with most of the characters produced in the 12” scaled Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line, Yak Face is an exact enlarged replica of the classic 1985 Kenner figure. What’s especially remarkable about Yak Face is that Gentle Giant Ltd. appears to be ever more concerned about how the original colors of the figures match in a bigger scale. You’ll be happy to know they’ve done very well here.

Yak Face comes with five points of articulation. A swivel head is joined by two swivel shoulders and two swivel hips. What’s completely been illuminated for us is how impressive the head sculpt is for an action figure created almost 30 years ago. Of course the 12” scale helps to make these details more pronounced, but he have to be clear about how impressed we are with the details that have been etched into the portrait including various warts, tufts of hair and the familiar friendliness in the eyes that his species seem to show. He is a bounty hunter, so that’s a great façade for him, isn’t it? His legs have been sculpted evenly so he has a great center of gravity and can stand unassisted. He comes with an awesome force pike. It is difficult to get it into his hand, but with some perseverance you’ll eventually get him to hold it, although his hands will sustain some paint rub-off damage unfortunately. For almost $80, Yak Face is definitely a novelty collectible. But those that grew up with the Kenner line and are looking for some “powerfully vintage” toys for their collections, this is one you should definitely consider.
