Clone Troopers from the 212th Attack Battalion battle Separatist forces on the planet Utapau. The Clone Troopers fight the Battle Droids in the closing days of the Clone Wars, as the battalion's Jedi General, Obi-Wan Kenobi, duels General Grievous.

The inaugural products that fall under the Star Wars [Darth Vader/Revenge Of The Sith] line look focuses on characters from Revenge Of The Sith. But Hasbro has done a great job selecting the most recognizable characters and corresponding scenes to develop products for it. Intended to complement the 3d release of Revenge Of The Sith in theaters, after those plans were indefinitely shelved, Hasbro was already a good year into the product development that they had to make plans already established work. It looks as if they kept the planned line look and Episode III alive and with the resultant first wave of Saga Legends and Mission Series sub-lines. It also seems that Star Wars collectors once again will be receiving a healthy dose of items from the final chapter in the Prequel Trilogy. Enter the Battle Droid/212th Battalion Clone Trooper set, also referred to as Mission Series: Utapau. It brings together two very popular army-building characters from the pivotal Battle of Utapau sequence. Designed for kids, it may become a two-pack of figures that in the end won’t deliver what it needs to be a worthwhile release.

The Battle Droid is a recast of the Battle Droid figure from 2007’s TAC Battle Droids Saga Legends two-pack. (The same figure was also release singly for $9.99 in the 2012 Movie Heroes line also.) The 2013 version is manufactured from what we are referring to as a bizarre plastic. It’s rubbery, yet firm yet possesses the inability to benefit the action figure and prevent it from toppling over to the ground. It was maddening shooting the photo gallery for this set. Admirably painted, the Battle Droid elicits a negative response more than anything else. Its inability to stand will frustrate the young ones and incite adult collectors to enraged madness. OK, maybe it’s not that bad. But it’s bad. The Battle Droid comes with a removable backpack and droid blaster. Despite the figure’s other faults, the backpack stays perfectly in place, and the droid can hold the gun without issue. It’s a shame that the Mission Series sets come without any pack-in premium. When you take a look back at what we had with the “Shadow Of The Dark Side” lines, it seems we're a far way off from that time. Getting extra weapons and a display stand are a huge benefit to interact with the figures. We’re not sure if a lower MSRP takes that sting away. Maybe.

The “more exciting” figure in this two-pack is clearly the 212th Battalion Clone Trooper. We have received more than our fair share of these clone troopers in various lines, but this is the first one we have ever received that comes with only five points of articulation. The sculpt is above average. The pose is boring. And the paint job is interesting. We have to comment on the look and feel of this clone trooper. For lack of a better way of explaining this, the tone of the figure is “chalky.” It’s dull and has a texture that reminds you more of a piece of chalk than a piece of plastic. We have described the looks and feel of the plastic on the other figures in this line as bizarre, but when it comes to the phase II clone troopers, they have this dull and chalky feel to them. The helmet on the 212th Battalion Clone Trooper is not very screen accurate. His visor is much too thin, and the helmet size seems too small. He only comes with a DC-15 blaster and is very, very limited in the ways he can hold it. Color us disappointed with this set. Again, we grow increasingly concerned for this line. Hopefully, the MSRP will be the only saving grace to this line. Because right now, the figures aren’t cutting it at all.
