IG-88 is a bounty hunter hired by Darth Vader to track down the Millennium Falcon. The heavily armed assassin droid was created for combat, but a miscalculation in the design caused him to begin attacking everyone in sight the moment he was activated.

Another phenomenal bounty hunter action figure is released for the 2010 “Shadow Of The Dark Side” Saga Legends line. This hive of scum and villainy is always a welcomed addition to any basic figure lineup and with the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back as well as a bounty hunter focus in The Clone Wars television show, expect to see plenty of them for a while now. As with any action figure rereleased into a current toy line, IG-88 has also experienced some inadvertent changes for its 2010 release. The changes are noticeable, but we should probably emphasize that they aren’t that big of a deal, unless you’re variation freak like us. IG-88 (Bounty Hunter) was relatively flawless in the 2007 The Saga Collection “vintage” assortment and it goes without saying that it looks just as fine in 2010 as it did in 2007. Even though this assassin droid comes slightly changed for the “Shadow Of The Dark Side" lineup, it’s worth noting that if you have the 2007 version and aren’t interested in slight changes that it’s really the only version you need. We have to admit that the updates do make IG-88 better looking than its 2007 counterpart, but that is only our opinion. You’ll have to decide that for yourself of course.

IG-88 actually has more differences than what our cameras were able to pick up in the gallery shots. In a nutshell, there is significantly more rust (the final wash) on the updated 2010 version. This reddish-orange coating is much more visible and collects in more crevices than on the 2007 mode. This is especially apparent on the figure’s head, chest and extremities. The bright red paint used to decorate his photoreceptors, which reminds us a lot of the color you see in TARGET stores, is brighter as well. The “eyes” look like they’re glowing now and we’re impressed with the final result very much. Less noticeable but still apparent is his bandolier which has now been cast in a darker colored plastic – and the grenades in this bandolier are painted much darker as well. They looked gray on the 2007 version and they now look black on the 2010 version. The actual silver plastic seems to be an ever-so-slightly different shade now too, but this is less obvious and the light could be playing tricks with our eyes. But bottom line is that there are definitely some differences when compared to the VTSC action figure. The best part for us however is the Galactic Battle Card Game action figure display stand IG-88 comes with in the package. This new stand works superbly with the widespread stance of IG-88’s legs. We love it!

As you’re probably very well aware, the sculpt of IG-88 is incredible. Hasbro worked an amazing 17 points of articulation into this assassin droid and this is no small feat for an action figure of this size. Sure, IG-88 is one of the tallest action figures in the Hasbro line, but the way they incorporated quality articulation into this figure is nothing short of impressive. The figure is easy to pose and even better is that IG-88 can hold onto his weapons very well. This droid is proportionate to the other bounty hunters in the 3.75” line and perhaps looks the best out of them all. IG-88’s size is intimidating as he towers over Darth Vader. And of course the arsenal of weapons at his side provides proof of this. IG-88 is indeed one of the greatest action figures produced by Hasbro and it’s unequivocally the definitive version of IG-88. IG-88 never has to be resculpted at this point again. Sure, Hasbro can feel free to update the paint operations as they choose, but you can count this one definitive, folks. This is what the Saga Legends line needs to be like. Hasbro should include some of their best efforts into the line like this IG-88 figure as well as the popular heroes and villains. A great action figure like this has to be represented in a basic figure lineup periodically and this is absolutely the best way to do it. A greatest hits line is a way for Hasbro to get out these fantastic figures time and again while spending zero dollars on the extraordinarily expensive tooling costs.
