Clegg Holdfast is one of the Podracers in the Boonta Eve Classic. Clegg is a journalist for the Podracing Quarterly and enters the races to better cover his stories. His engines are destroyed during the race and he crashes in the desert.

Was anything longer and more torturous to watch than the entire podrace sequence in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace? We apologize in advance if you are a fan of this very long scene, but we found it a bit much to bear. Hasbro certainly has not given it all the attention they could have over the years, as we only randomly get a few podracing pilots every few years. Apparently the first wave of the Legacy Collection was the appropriate time to release another one. Clegg Holdfast was Hasbro's choice pilot to help in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Episode I and we are a bit surprised by it. Fans have been clamoring for years for Hasbro to release Ben Quadinaros. (Editor's Note: Ben Quadinaros & Otoga-222 saw release in The Vintage Collection.) Unfortunately, Hasbro has ignored our pleas (even despite his frequent appearance in Fans' Choice polls) and decided to go with a less popular podracing candidate. Clegg Holdfast certainly checks off another character off of our Boonta Eve Classic stunt-performer lists, but it leaves you feeling a little bit empty inside. He is not much of a figure and is a little light for his basic figure price tag. Originally intended to be a two-pack, Hasbro nixed figure #2 for, you guessed it, costing issues. Thankfully, he comes well-designed with a remarkable and very well-hidden 12 points of articulation and this generous motion was certainly not necessary for a figure with such small stature and someone who essentially sits.

Clegg Holdfast isn't painted that well. At first, you are led to believe that he has a Sy Snootles like pattern on his skin, but then you realize the spots continue onto his clothing and armor. In fact, it is very difficult to see where his outfit ends and flesh begins. He is colored without nearly enough contrast required to make this clear. The silver spots around his collar look great, but the speckles juts throw us for a loop. He looks a little cleaner in the film stills we don't understand what Hasbro intended these spots to be. Are they rocks, disintegrated podracers, dust, disintegrated podracer pilot? Ugh! We don't know, but it is very distracting. His chest and thigh armor are sculpted very nicely in a bronze color and his finer details like hands and feet are too very well done. He comes with a blaster pistol and removable goggles that are a very burdensome chore to get over his head. We were futzing with it so long that we were to the past point of losing patience. You know, to the point of starting to think of not so nice words. While it is evident that Hasbro worked hard to create a very nice sculpt, it fails in paint application. Unfortunately, it is the paint application that can make or break a figure's final status. This is nothing new to collectors, but we must iterate how the paint operations tremendously fail this pretty great sculpt.

If you are a podracing fan, this figure is a no-brainer. And if it is your goal to complete every Build A Droid figure, than this a must-buy for you too. Currently, the Biker Scout (BD12) also ships with the same part. It was a nice gesture by Hasbro to give us a popular army building figure to pick up the duplicate droid part if we were to pass on Clegg. It is probably the weakest figure next to the Queen Amidala figure in this wave, so its purchase is your call. The Phantom Menace grows more and more special over time, partially due to the credit Hasbro gives it with its vast array of new action figure releases. And there is certainly a great deal more to come down the road. We expect to see Hasbro complete the podracer cast with the likes of Mahownic and Ben Quadinaros among many others. (Editor's Note: Both of these figures have been made for 2012's The Phantom Menace 3D release.) It is our desire to see Hasbro give us a little more value for the price of a basic figure. Clegg Holdfast certainly could have been included with a lot more accessories. It would be ideal if Hasbro could give us a little more punch with the smaller sized action figures. But we suppose if cost continues to be an issue with everything anymore, it is better to get this figure by itself than not at all. We will trade one for the other for sure.
