Review: Republic Commando - PGM Exclusive Mini Bust

Posted by Paul | January 31, 2013 at 06:06 AM ET |

Here is another PGM exclusive Mini Bust, the all-white Republic Commando. (If you've been following us on Facebook, you have already seen an exclusive "family" shot with all five Republic Commando Mini Busts. Click HERE if you missed it on our Facebook page.) It has a cool light-up visor feature and the pose is dynamic. But will you be able to secure one? (Doubtful.) Check it out in detail in our Research Droids Reviews today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! Star Wars: Is It LOST Or Found Now?

Posted by Paul | January 30, 2013 at 08:22 PM ET |

Wow! It’s been an intense couple of days. New Hasbro announcements have already seemingly overshadowed the truly big announcement that we officially have a new director for Episode VII. So much has been going on in the various rumor mills that it’s been hard to find time to present an overview of personal thoughts regarding the announcement of J.J. Abrams as the director of our next beloved Star Wars film. Click through for more.

30 (77-07) Redux - Wave 9 - With Intro By Dan Curto

Posted by Chuck | January 30, 2013 at 07:04 PM ET |

We have always felt that the 30 (77-07) is one of the greatest collections of figures Hasbro has done to date. While not all of them were made in the expected super-articulated fashion that’s become standard today, many of the figures brought into the line are nonetheless done so well from the start that they will likely never see an update again. We will be releasing updates to this very cherished line wave by wave. We have updated our Visual Guides and we’ve processed all-new expanded galleries and a new “stats box” that mimics the card backs of the figures in the line in our Research Droids Reviews. We could tell you how we feel about this final wave of 2007, but we thought it best explained by Dan Curto, who played a key role in the selection process for this wave....

When The Force Unleashed video game release was delayed in 2007, Hasbro decided to pull out a wave of 7 action figures that were based on characters that appeared in the game. This opened up the door for a new "repaint wave" to be added to the line. I was invited to participate in a weekend brainstorming session held over Easter weekend, and I worked directly with Hasbro to select the 7 replacement figures...

Click through to read his full report (featuring a little history on this wave), including some of the figures that didn't make the cut!

Walmart Computers Say "Keep It Stocked!" We Agree With Them!

Posted by Paul | January 30, 2013 at 12:28 PM ET |

We found this interesting and believe you will too. Walmart computers have The Vintage Collection marked as "Keep It Stocked" despite TARGET's recent clearances. We like the sound of that a lot and hope it also means that TVC will be on shelves for a lot longer than just the "Stop Gap" assortments. In fact, a full case is on order at this particular store and still at a $9.96 MSRP. While it's logical to believe that this applies to the "greatest hits" assortments coming out "next" month, these are old UPCs. Your thoughts please after the jump!

The "Lost" Final Wave Of 2012 Movie Heroes - A Quick Recap For You

Posted by Paul | January 25, 2013 at 09:55 PM ET |

Just in case you missed any of them, click any thumbnail image below to see the last figures from the final wave of the Movie Heroes line that "probably" won't be coming to USA customers. These "international exclusives" (that is our assumption) may not all see release in the USA right away (if at all – we hope we're wrong – and definitely unlikely in the 2012 SW [TPM 3D] line look with the Galactic Battle Game cards). And figures like the tan Battle Droid and Boba Fett are NOT in the plans for the 2013 line look either right now. If you do collect this line, we did all the hard work to bring them to you in one place - both in our popular Visual Guide and Research Droid Reviews formats. We'd also like to mention that without our good friends Mats J. from Sweden and Julien M. from France we would still be empty-handed. We would like to publicly thank them again for their respective assistance.

30 (77-07) Redux - Wave 8

We have always felt that the 30 (77-07) is one of the greatest collections of figures Hasbro has done to date. While not all of them were made in the expected super-articulated fashion that’s become standard today, many of the figures brought into the line are nonetheless done so well from the start that they will likely never see an update again. We will be releasing updates to this very cherished line wave by wave. We have updated our Visual Guides and we’ve processed all-new expanded galleries and a new “stats box” that mimics the card backs of the figures in the line in our Research Droids Reviews. Click through as we spotlight Wave 8 – one of the most common, but still very relevant waves in the line and a solid cast of characters based on Attack Of The Clones (and some surrounding events). Standouts include the Tartakovsky realistically inspired Voolvif Monn, a fantastically interchangeable Padmé Amidala, one of our most favorite Jango Fett interpretations (to date) and of course the brilliant Concept Rebel Trooper. See these and more with all-new RDR photo galleries and updated VGs!

International Intrigue Or Are We Heading Towards A Grim Future?

Posted by Paul | January 19, 2013 at 09:44 PM ET |

JTA reader Mats J. from Sweden gives us a very interesting report from Toys R Us (in Sweden). You may be asking why we are posting this info when JTA is an American-based fan site. Well, the following report kind of reveals something internationally about the overall attitude towards the modern Star Wars line. It seems that locations in the world that are fortunate enough to get rare items like the Naboo Starfighter even have lost the fire towards the Star Wars brand. The missteps of 2012 may have brung us to a point of no return. Perhaps it's too soon to panic. But as a typically "half glass full" person, I have never felt more fear for the line's future than I do today. Click through for more information....

You Saw Our Reviews, Now They Are Beginning To Hit eBay!

Posted by Paul | January 18, 2013 at 07:59 PM ET |

You saw our reviews for the final wave of Movie Heroes in 2012 "Darth Maul" packaging (Battle Droid review coming soon). Now a few have hit eBay. Click through to see the madness!

The Cloud Car Pilot action figure from The Original Trilogy Collection is an action figure you should definitely own even today. While far from super-articulated, he still has 12 points of articulation and can serve as a brilliant co-pilor/gunner to 2010's TVC (Twin Pod) Cloud Car Pilot (VC11) figure. He's technically inaccurrate to the concept drawings by Nilo Rodis Jamero BUT Hasbro mimicked the 1982 Kenner figure to inspire its paint job. You always wanted Kenner colors on modern figures, so here you go! See why we love this figure and why you should too in our Research Droids Reviews today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! 2012 TVC Special Action Figure Sets Also On Clearance....

Posted by Paul | January 17, 2013 at 05:39 PM ET |

It's a terrible shame that there are still sets left to go on clearance. SHAME ON YOU to any of you who didn't buy one of each at full price. (This is ALSO part of the equation why Star Wars is failing. We're so quick to blame Hasbro and the hobby is filled with tight-wads. Sorry, didn't mean to go down that dark path.) But the Special Action Figures Sets have also hit clearance. JTA reader Gary H. sends in some hard to believe news. Hasbro is rereleasing some "fans' choice" figures. (I hope those who waited miss out on this clearance. Man, I am in rare form tonight....) Anyway, JTA reader Zachary P. has the story for us....

Some TARGETs Blowing Out TVC Figures That Collectors Need!

Posted by Paul | January 17, 2013 at 05:25 PM ET |

JTA reader Gary H. sends in some hard to believe news. Hasbro is rereleasing some "fans' choice" figures in February and TARGET is discounting the ones Hasbro isn't necessarily sending but that collectors desperately need! This must be an episode of The Twilight Zone....

Review: Princess Leia - OTC - Basic (OTC #18)

Posted by Paul | January 17, 2013 at 07:58 AM ET |

The Original Trilogy Collection gave us long-awaited updates to some of the oldest Star Wars action figures ever made. The simply named Princess Leia should have had the subtitle (Bespin Gown), but at least she came on a really cool card back. See her analysis in our Research Droids Reviews today. 30 (77-07) Redux - Wave 7

Posted by Chuck | January 16, 2013 at 02:07 PM ET |

We have always felt that the 30 (77-07) is one of the greatest collections of figures Hasbro has done to date. While not all of them were made in the expected super-articulated fashion that’s become standard today, many of the figures brought into the line are nonetheless done so well from the start that they will likely never see an update again. We will be releasing updates to this very cherished line wave by wave. We have updated our Visual Guides and we’ve processed all-new expanded galleries and a new “stats box” that mimics the card backs of the figures in the line in our Research Droids Reviews. Click through as we spotlight Wave 7 of this collection. Focusing on Return of the Jedi, we received another wave full of all-new sculpts (5 total out of 6!), which featured a nice 2-pack of ewoks! The only downside to this wave was the transformation of Anakin's spirit to the likeness of Hayden Christensen. Some things are just better left alone. And, as with all previous waves, the McQuarrie Concept Figure did not disappoint!

Special thanks goes out to Mats Johansson from Sweden for securing three of the four figures for us that make up the final wave of Movies Heroes from the 2012 Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D] line. This also includes Boba Fett, a "fun" update to the 2004 VOTC figure, with zip-line/rappelling jetpack now. Review: Sandtrooper - SW [TPM 3D] - Movie Heroes (MH23)

Posted by Paul | January 15, 2013 at 07:46 AM ET |

By the grace of our beloved international JTA readers, we have secured the final wave of the 2012 Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D] Movie Heroes line. The Sandtrooper is definitely for the kiddies with his light-up leaf blower and all, but sadly your kiddies may not have the opportunity to play with this for quite some time yet. (Oh what happened to the Star Wars line?) See this fun, albeit completely screen inaccurate, all-new sculpted Sandtrooper (yes, even the head sculpt is all-new – man, Hasbro doesn't know how to save one penny anymore, do they?) in our Research Droids Reviews today. It could be months before you see these available for purchase. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Posted by Paul | January 14, 2013 at 12:01 AM ET |

By the grace of our beloved international JTA readers, we have secured the final wave of the 2012 Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D] Movie Heroes line. Three came from Sweden (yeah, we lied) and the fourth is en route from France as you read this. Sadly, all four figures' releases in America (in the 2012 packaging at least) seem to be in grave danger. So please enjoy the very first American look at the Anakin Skywalker (MH19) light-up action figure in our Research Droids Reviews now. It could be months before you see these available for purchase. What anti-The Clone Wars adult OT purist wouldn't melt at an action figure like this? This is what Hasbro needs to release in The Clone Wars line. Oh, and give us that TCW Blue Snaggletooth too darn it!

Review: Jar Jar Binks With W. Wald - Mini Busts

Well, the Jar Jar Binks With W. Wald Mini Bust set came way after Christmas did, so you'll have to display the Christmas accessories that came with it this December instead of this past one. More importantly, we worry that MANY people will never be able to have a Jar Jar Binks Mini Bust in their collections now. That's the real tragedy here. See why in our Research Droids Reviews. Review: Rabé (Queen's Chambers) - OTC - '05 #5

Posted by Paul | January 12, 2013 at 12:45 AM ET |

The nice thing about Rabé (Queen's Chambers) is that the face sculpt is generic enough to be any of the handmaidens up to and including Padmé Amidala. We like this simple action figure very much. See why you need at least a half a dozen of them! It's all laid out in our Research Droids Reviews. Review: Queen Amidala (Celebration Ceremony) - OTC - '05 #4

Posted by Paul | January 11, 2013 at 07:53 AM ET |

Queen Amidala (Celebration Ceremony) hurts so good. A great head sculpt and a beautiful gown are lessened by a terrible body sculpt and even worse articulation. But will you care if she is just displayed as a statue in a diorama? (Maybe because it's unlikely you'll be able to display her at a 90 degree angle to the surface!) 30 (77-07) Redux - Wave 5 (One Of The Greatest Waves Of All Time!)

Posted by Paul | January 02, 2013 at 01:33 PM ET |

We have always felt that the 30 (77-07) is one of the greatest collections of figures Hasbro has done to date. While not all of them were made in the expected super-articulated fashion that’s become standard today, many of the figures brought into the line are nonetheless done so well from the start that they will likely never see an update again. We will be releasing updates to this very cherished line wave by wave. We have updated our Visual Guides and we’ve processed all-new expanded galleries and a new “stats box” that mimics the card backs of the figures in the line in our Research Droids Reviews. Click through as we spotlight Wave 5 - which is easily hailed one of the greatest figures waves of all time, not just in the 30 (77-07) line look! Darth Malak, Darth Revan, Anakin Skywalker (with bruise-leech crawler markings on Nelvaan - not tattoos), Yoda & Kybuck, Roron Corobb and Hermi Odle are just a few of the masterpieces in this incredible wave. See these and more with all-new RDR photo galleries and updated VGs!

Review: Yoda's Jedi Attack Fighter With Yoda & Super Battle Droid

Posted by Paul | January 02, 2013 at 06:33 AM ET |

For some, the recent direction of the Star Wars toy line is a bit disheartening. Figure sculpting, while on the surface looks pretty good, is reverting back to the stone age. And it doesn't look like things are changing for the better for the 2013 product year either. See another new product in our Research Droids Reviews today: Yoda's Jedi Attack Fighter With Yoda & Super Battle Droid which utilizes some Build A Droid technology. (Um, doesn't a Jedi Fighter use itself for defense and never for attack?) Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Posted by Chuck | January 01, 2013 at 05:50 PM ET |

In the case of the Yoda Jedi Master Sixth Scale figure it's the accessories that will make this figure a must have! Special Report: 2013: Almost Done, So Give Us Some!

Posted by Paul | January 01, 2013 at 09:02 AM ET |

It's January 1st, so you know what that means. It's our annual assessment of how many definitive modern counterparts we now have available to us when compared to the precious Kenner vintage lineup from 1978-1985. 2013 is the year Hasbro is recycling a bunch of figures from The Vintage Collection, and in a similar manner we have recycled much of last year's report because we really are so far along. But we have updated many details, photos and even changed the ranking on some of the figures. Please click through to enjoy 2013: Almost Done, So Give Us Some!
