July 2016

We were quite shocked to learn something just yesterday that transpired during SDCC this year with Hasbro that didn't make it to the front page of any fan sites that attended (the pages we visit at least). Hasbro actually surveyed random people and asked them SPECIFICALLY about The Vintage Collection 3.75" super-articulated line and how those people asked about it would rank it against Hasbro's other lines. How this went unnoticed or overlooked is beyond me. Thankfully, the beautiful Victoria from Victoria's Cantina (a regular here at JTA) was one of the lucky ones to be surveyed. We have her experience for you to read through (by clicking through), but we also want something from our 6", 3.75" SA and 5POA collectors too. If Hasbro is looking for a focus group, they have a pretty substantial one here at JTA. Click through for more.

Another repacked figure in the Star Wars"Saga" line was Luke Skywalker (Tatooine Encounter). Check it out in our Research Droids Reviews. Be sure to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Kylo Ren [Unmasked] - The Black Series Exclusive

Forbes online has just posted an article where the author of the article, Luke Thompson, interviews Hasbro. There is a very interesting tidbit of information posted in it. He writes "Before signing off, he also dropped a few more tidbits for fans: the Comic-Con exclusives this year that were deluxe versions of Obi-Wan Kenobi and unmasked Kylo Ren will be hitting retail in stripped-down versions with less accessories, Force Awakens merchandise will continue strongly even as Rogue One rolls out, and they plan to make a big announcement in the near future regarding the super-articulated 4-inch figures that are currently exclusive to Walmart." Click through to read the full article. Could this possibly be the "thing" we're all waiting for finally?

JTA Facebook friend Andy K. was recently in Tokyo and snapped an image of more upcoming SH Figuarts figures from Bandai. In case you weren't aware of or have seen any of them yet, collectors can expect a Darth Maul with his speeder bike, a Super Battle Droid, R4-P17 and C-3PO (Episode II). Tamashi Nations are hitting this line out of the park, never forsaking any of the film franchises with this beautiful line.

Review: Obi-Wan Kenobi - TBS6 [P3] - SDCC Exclusive

Posted by Paul | July 29, 2016 at 12:05 AM ET |

Let's continue looking at Hasbro's The Black Series 6" convention exclusives! You saw JTA break the news of his imminent release before Toy Fair this year, and now he is finally available for the taking as a San Diego Comic Con exclusive. Check out the divine Obi-Wan Kenobi figure. Unlike Sergeant Jyn Erso, Obi-Wan Kenobi is actually almost perfect. (We still think the basic release should come with all of these accessories and cost the same price.) See why this is a must-have figure in our Research Droids Reviews. Review: Sergeant Jyn Erso - TBS6 [P3] - SDCC Exclusive

Posted by Paul | July 28, 2016 at 12:10 AM ET |

Here we go! The reviews are here for the TBS6 convention exclusives! Sergeant Jyn Erso is a figure we had extremely high hopes for, but devastatingly, the action figure disappoints. Hasbro has a major factory issue on their hands that's truly plaguing the line. And Sergeant Jyn Erso is the next victim in line. The TBS6 figures are typically without exception phenomenally tooled sculpts. But they're "ruined" thanks to horrid and inaccurate facial paint operations. What's more, for $20+ per figure, we're going to have to demand a higher level of quality for them. Sorry Hasbro. See more in our Research Droids Reviews. Be sure to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Posted by Chuck | July 26, 2016 at 07:36 AM ET |

Hasbro Toy Shop has posted that the CE3 and SDCC exclusives will be available for sale on Tuesday, August 9th. No time was listed, so it looks like it will be a refresh-a-thon. Thanks to all our readers who wrote in to let us know it was posted! Hasbro posted this FAQ:

Although subject to change, we are planning on having the Convention Exclusives available to order on Tuesday, August 9th.The product will be located in the EXCLUSIVES category. No phone orders will be accepted. All Convention Exclusives are excluded from any promotions and discounts.

What will the limits be for the figures? The limits will be the same at the show and on the site once they go live. These limits are per person and per household.

Can I get on a waiting list for Comic Con items? No, HasbroToyShop.com does not have a waiting list for any items including Comic Con items.

Is Constable Zuvio The "TPM 3D" Of 2015?

Posted by Paul | July 25, 2016 at 05:21 PM ET |

So, we know from conversations at SDCC that Hasbro is well aware of distribution issues. But we want to know what they are going to do about it. The image below accurately illustrates the state of what so many stores look like right now, and now that we know the line look isn't changing, it's unlikely the assortment numbers will change either. If assortment numbers don't change, then this means that new products will be instantly blocked until this old product moves out. Do you see the awful vicious cycle folks? Anyone? Anyone?

The Black Series 2016 Cheaters' Choice Poll

Posted by Paul | July 22, 2016 at 11:38 AM ET |

A mere few hours ago, Jaina Solo had only 17% of the vote. Dengar was even catching up to her (like only a couple of percentage points away from each other). Now that we're in the final hours of voting, she and Starkiller have been tripping over each other and their percentages have jettisoned to new and ludicrous heights. And once reigning champion Darth Talon has sunk to Jaina's last night low. Too bad this poll runs right up against the Hasbro presentation. There is no way possible for StarWars.com to sift through all of the "off by one number" IPs addresses that are abusing the results in time. (Edit: some say it is cookie based – thank you Incognito browsers!) But if they do, man, are they going to be peeved. There are 108K votes cast. That doesn't even make the least bit of sense. For those of you that think I don't want Jaina to win are wrong. I like the character. I loathe ballot stuffing.

Celebration Catch Up: Rebels Season 3 Trailer Breakdown

Posted by Mike_Taber | July 21, 2016 at 02:03 PM ET |

The trailer for season three of Star Wars Rebels certainly got a lot of people talking. From the introduction of Grand Admiral Thrawn(!) to the continued threat of Darth Maul, it appears we’re in store for a very eventful third season. It’s time to delve deep into this jam-packed trailer. Click through for the full breakdown

Celebration didn't feature a big Episode VIII announcement, but director Rian Johnson was on hand to talk about the process of bringing the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga to life. Although we've heard a lot of what he said before, Johnson offered up some interesting information when he listed six films that influenced the direction of Episode VIII. The six films he mentioned were Bridge on the River Kwai, Gunga Din, Sahara (1943), Letter Never SentTwelve O'Clock High, and Three Outlaw Samurai. It's definitely an intriguing group of classic movies and they almost exclusively take place during the middle of war. It will be interesting to see how directly these films influenced Episode VIII.

Posted by Paul | July 20, 2016 at 12:10 AM ET |

Hasbro repacked the Jango Fett (Kamino Escape) figure into the third phase of the Star Wars "Saga" line with a different number. But the figure was also repainted. Jango Fett (Kamino Escape)

Let's hope the paint jobs are good folks! Here is our first true "gift" in a VERY long time! Entertainment Earth just placed a pre-order for a mystery 3.75" super-articulated Star Wars action figure set for $79.99. There are SIX figures in the set, but 5 are FIRST TIME OFFERINGS. How exciting is that? If you look carefully in the background you'll see a sandcrawler as a clue, although that doesn't mean all these characters will be from A New Hope. Let's hope MULTIPLES of these are in the works regardless of what characters are chosen (this is what we need, Hasbro, to engage us)! We believe this could this be the long-rumored astromech /protocol droid multipack that has been talked about for "years" now. We'll surely find out at SDCC this year! Pre-order your set now!

UPDATE: Diverse Range Of Interesting Dudes" = DROIDS. (Thank you Jayson Krebsbach for confirming what we've been speculating!)

He wanted to see what they looked like without their outerwear. Check them out, and click through for his summary on them.

CNN Money Says Hasbro Should Just Call Itself Disney Toys

Posted by Paul | July 18, 2016 at 01:40 PM ET |

CNN Money exclaims "Maybe Hasbro should call themselves Disney Toys." Ironic? Serendipitous? Interesting? "The toy maker's relationship with the House of Mouse has "transformed" the company into one of Wall Street's favorite playthings." Be sure to check out this article. Special thanks to Paul B. for the link.

Why We Will Wait Forever To No Avail For Things To Change

Posted by Paul | July 18, 2016 at 11:49 AM ET |

This is why things aren't going to change for the better for the Star Wars super-articulated 3.75" line, folks. As a stock company, cutting costs for higher profits is the number one goal. And because these lower quality items sell at higher prices regardless (if they can be found), why would Hasbro even attempt to make higher quality items to endanger those higher profits? Despite what feels like the worst time to be a Star Wars collector, Hasbro is still turning a buck in their stocks. Realistically, Hasbro is doing everything right from a business standpoint. But are they good stewards of their license that they hold onto like grim death and won't sub-license out to another company? Should the SA 3.75" line perhaps be given to new energetic and eager company that will make most out it sub-licensing? Heck, give Funko the rights so they can make non-Bobblehead Pops! Funko certainly knows how to please the "small insignificant group of collectors" that buy their products. Hasbro probably will never again produce the quantity or selection we want to see – or want to purchase. We hope they will at least consider subletting their license to another company who does make incredible collector geared products. Market Watch has the full story. Special thank to JTA reader D N for the link.

A new Facebook group has been formed called Sinister Six Bounty Hunters Collective and they are based in Philadelphia. More than just a social media page, this group also meets in person. Their desire is to have open discussions on anything Star Wars related with a special focus on toys and collectibles. They want to establish regular get-togethers. Star Wars talk.... trade.... and sales are welcomed at these meetings, but of course scalping is not allowed. The group will be meeting tonight at 8:00 PM ET at Millers Ale House at Grant and The Boulevard in Philadelphia. I will be in attendance tonight as well. I will have some freebies, so if you're in the area, please come and join us. Help us grow this group!

Review: General Grievous - TAC - Saga Legends

Posted by Paul | July 18, 2016 at 12:25 AM ET |

How Scary TBS6 Princess Leia Can Be Updated Tremendously

Posted by Paul | July 17, 2016 at 07:31 AM ET |

Hasbro, rightfully so we are all concerned about The Black Series 6" Princess Leia Organa figure. We truly hope you have the time to correct this figure. JTA reader EmpireSB has taken it upon himself to Photoshop the image of "scary Leia" that has made its way across the web and update some of the applications to show how this figure should be approached with deco. Sure, you do have to look at "addressing the delicacies of lips, eyes and eyebrows" but you also need to revisit the hairline too. (Please stop it with the "angry eyebrows" in general.) We hope you can take this Photoshopped image as a start to make her even better. Thank you. This isn't a figure that has room or time for a learning curve. Thank you!

Review: Princess Leia (With Sail Barge Cannon) - POTJ - Deluxe

Posted by Paul | July 17, 2016 at 12:10 AM ET |

The Power Of The Jedi line reintroduced the Deluxe format to collectors. One of the standout releases in this lineup was Princess Leia (With Sail Barge Cannon) set. Learn more about it in our Research Droids Reviews. Be sure to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Princess Leia (With Sail Barge Cannon)

It has been one year today since I lost my friend Mark Grimshaw to cancer. Although a friend, he also was an avid Star Wars collector as well as a fixture here at Jedi Temple Archives (as studlydudly) in the comments. He also spent a significant amount of time at our colleagues' sites Yakface.com and BanthaSkull.com. He thoroughly enjoyed the hobby. Mark's caregiver John T. reached out to me to see if I would share what he had made with some of Mark's remaining t-shirts that he found. He had them made into two quilts and then gifted them to Mark's parents. You can look at them by clicking the thumbnails below.

SPOILER WARNING: July's Smuggler's Bounty Exclusive Pop! Revealed

Posted by Paul | July 16, 2016 at 03:13 PM ET |

The exclusive Funko Pop! Vinyl figure for July's Smuggler's Bounty has been revealed via an eBay auction (or it certainly looks that way). But because I got reamed out once by someone who doesn't want to be spoiled by the Smuggler's Bounty boxes, you're going to have to CLICK THROUGH and see the eBay auction yourself. Please don't spoil it for anyone else in the comments. Thank you!! Special thanks to JTA reader Barry M.J. for the alert!

In case you didn't hear yet, a new Grand Admiral Thrawn book is coming in 2017 and Timothy Zahn is involved! And they thought they could kill the "Legends" stories. This is exciting news indeed!

We've also uploaded our Hasbro gallery of images. Of particular note, Hasbro yanked the Princess Leia Organa figure out of the case. The pressure must have become too much for them. Darth Revan is also looking a bit "gimp-ish" too. What's up with that latex looking hood? I really hope the final figures look a whole lot better.

Felicity Jones Reveals Her Own Action Figure At SWCE Panel

Posted by Paul | July 15, 2016 at 05:36 PM ET |

Revealed today in London during the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” cast panel at Star Wars Celebration was Hasbro’s Star Wars The Black Series “Jyn Erso” action figure — the first of new “Rogue One” products to be seen publicly. The 6-inch figure was revealed by Jyn herself – played by Felicity Jones – with panel moderator, Gwendoline Christie who welcomed Felicity to the action figure club. “Jyn” will be represented across a variety of products – something fans will have to wait and see for themselves later this year, when all new “Rogue One” products launch globally at retail. Entertainment Earth is offering exclusive bundled deals on their exclusives. Check them out!

An image of the new The Black Series 6" Princess Leia Organa has been revealed from Celebration Europe (courtesy of Jedi Insider). The figure is a disaster. JTA reader Josh M. composited this new image with 2004's VOTC Princess Leia Organa (courtesy of Rebelscum.com's Photo Archives) so you can see how much better a more-than-decade old sculpt looks. Leia probably has/may have a great sculpt, but unfortunately that has been destroyed with pretty rough paint operations! Stay tuned as we provide better and clearer images soon!

UPDATE 1: Toy Ark has posted some close-up images of the newly revealed TBS6 figures. Leia doesn't look any better, sadly.

UPDATE 2: Apparently the outcries from the web have prompted Hasbro to respond to this Princess Leia Organa figure. Hasbro claims that they're aware of the problems and are currently working on tweaking the paint operations for a better likeness. To quote Hasbro's Steve Evans “the Leia figure shown at SWCE is a pre-production ‘first shot’ and is not final deco. We are addressing the delicacies of lips, eyes and eyebrows. The hood is also not stitched as it will be in final product.”

BREAKING NEWS! Hasbro To Produce Their Own Die Cast Metal Figures

Posted by Paul | July 15, 2016 at 08:46 AM ET |

Well, this is interesting. Longtime collectors will probably remember that Titanium Metal Die Cast action figures from years ago. Probably in part due to the popularity of the Disney Elite Series figures, it appears that Hasbro is now following suit and producing their own Die Cast metal figures. We've learned about five Die Cast Metal figures coming. The scale is unknown, but presumably (we believe) they'll be in the 6" scale range since that is the trendy thing now, although that can't be confirmed at this point and 3.75" isn't ruled out. We do know that the packaging size is 2.5 x 5 x 7 inches if that gives you a better indication. We also don't know if they'll be painted in color (heaven help us if this is the case) or done in a more patina finish (which would give these figures vintage appeal). Interestingly, the characters are all based on Episode IV, which also gives good indication that these are to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. In other words, these may be released at the end of 2016/early 2017 to celebrate this monumental landmark event. We're also assuming that they will be under The Black Series banner since the helmets and miniature vehicles are. We could be wrong about that. Anyway, click through for the list. Once again, thank you to our Research Droids for leaking this information. And once we learn more, you'll learn more.

Ahsoka's Untold Stories Coming To Celebration Europe

Posted by Paul | July 07, 2016 at 02:44 PM ET |

Lucasfilm's sale to Disney ushered in a lot of changes for Star Wars fans. The most painful of these changes was the cancelation of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Clone Wars came to an end during its creative peak with several seasons of story left to tell. These unproduced episodes would have featured Ahsoka Tano, who walked away from the Jedi Order at the end of season five. Ahsoka later resurfaced in Star Wars Rebels, but we are still missing an important chapter in her life. Ahsoka is one of the most important and popular prequel-era characters and Celebration Europe will offer fans a look at the missing chapters in her life. The panel, titled Ahsoka's Untold Stories, will take place at the Galaxy Stage on July 15th from 11:00 to 12:00. Click through for all the details on this exciting panel!

Hasbro Announces The Black Series 6" 2016 Fans' Choice Poll!

Posted by Paul | July 06, 2016 at 08:00 AM ET |

Hasbro is thrilled to announce that they’ll be launching the Star Wars The Black Series 6" Fan’s Choice Poll again this year and they would love for you to be a part of it. Last year, fans from all over were able to cast their vote on the Star Wars character they wanted to be transformed into a Hasbro Black Series 6-inch figure – and it was a huge success, creating TWO new additions to the line (Sabine Wren and Darth Revan). They need the fans’ help again this year, and they’re hoping you’ll join us in hosting the poll! Click through for details and rules!

UPDATE #1: Deadlines of the various stages of this poll have been added to the RULES.

UPDATE #2: Other site participation list compiled by Paul Harrison (JTA) and Jayson Krebsbach at Yakface.com.

Collect All 3 Fan Group Table Patches at Celebration Europe 2016

Posted by Chuck | July 05, 2016 at 02:20 PM ET |

The members of The Dark Empire, Norwich Star Wars Club UK, and the Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society have created an exclusive patch set to be distributed at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016. You can collect all three pieces to assemble a patch that depicts Rey's first confrontation with Kylo Ren in the forests of Takodana. Each piece was produced in a limited run of 500, and will be given away free of charge. Look for these patches at the following booths:

  • The Dark Empire:  S438
  • Norwich Star Wars Club UK:  S243
  • Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society:  S356

Hasbro: you have a REAL problem on your hands. The opportunity to buy knock off Star Wars figures on eBay certainly is one thing. They're usually adult collectors looking to get a unique or obscure item. But when these knock-offs make their way to retailer Toys R Us thanks to an unscrupulous collector who returned it, you have to admit that you need to do more about this. Who knows what chemicals make these figures and who knows what quality control and safety standards and measures are taken (none) before these bootleg figures enter homes. China is taking complete advantage of your license, and it's all because you haven't produced enough to flood the market yourselves. JTA reader CommanderJoe276 bought one of these bootleg Darth Maul TBS6 figures at his local Toys R Us, yes I said Toys R Us, where the store manager swore up and down that it was the real deal. Perhaps PR should put out a memo that bootlegs are entering legitimate retail outlets now. It would be a travesty if one of these figures makes a kid sick or something even worse.

TBS6 Ahsoka Tano IN STOCK At Amazon!!

Posted by Paul | July 04, 2016 at 04:07 PM ET |

The Black Series Ahsoka Tano 6 Inch figure is $21.99 and IN STOCK on Amazon right now. Get her while you can!

It's pretty interesting to see how the value of The Black Series 3.75" figures has significantly increased recently on eBay. As you know, collectors began seeing a decline in the quality, selection and general offerings The Black Series 3.75" line brought us, especially when compared to the magnificent The Vintage Collection. Some of the more common peg-warmers don't even command their original values of course, but almost all of the "new" or first-time offered figures are double, tripe and quadruple their originals MSRPs. Of particular note, some sellers have put up individual parts of Jabba's Rancor Pit. You can find the all-new Jabba The hutt for $19.99 or the Rancor beast for under $40, which is a steal for both of them! It seems that there is still a market for 3.75" super-articulated action figures, despite what Hasbro has been burying their heads in the sand over for the last couple of years or so....

Amazon Quietly Eliminating List Pricing

Posted by Paul | July 04, 2016 at 01:25 PM ET |

Say goodbye to the old-fashioned MSRP folks! We've already begun seeing signs of this. The New York Times has just released an article exposing Amazon and the new direction they're taking with pricing merchandise. Simply put "There is just one price. Take it or leave it." The article goes on to explain that they're quietly eliminating "list" pricing and that you can expect top pay for whatever the average market is willing to pay for an item. It's nice to see how much power the "impatient and need to be instantly gratified" have on the rest of us. Or perhaps this is just the definition of corporate greed. Whatever. Check it out and decide for yourself. Special thanks to Ayem Mayem for the link.

Hasbro releases official details on the recently revealed, albeit long-rumored right here at JTA, The Black Series [Phase IV] Kylo Ren and Obi-Wan Kenobi figures. Click through for more

As expected, Hasbro made their big convention exclusives reveal via Entertainment Weekly. Two The Black Series 6 Inch figures were revealed: Kylo Ren (with banner and melted Vader helmet) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (with table and holographic Leia). Kylo Ren will be sold at Celebration Europe via the Forbidden Planet booth and Obi-Wan Kenobi will be available at San Diego Comic Con. Both figures were first revealed to be coming right here at Jedi Temple Archives in our many rumor reports. Hasbro must loathe us by now. Get the full details at Entertainment Weekly.

Before you panic about these key characters as exclusives, we will likely see these again in the basic line, just without the accessories and special packaging.

UPDATE: While it's definitely cool that Hasbro is making exclusive versions of these for conventions, rest assured that BOTH will be part of the mainstream TBS Phase IV line look too, probably without the exclusive accessories is all.

One of the greatest 12 Inch Figures released by Hasbro was Yoda (Ultimate Jedi Master). See why it still holds up well today in our Research Droids Reviews today.
