Review: Darth Vader - Life Size Bust (Our 1500th Review!!!)

Posted by Paul | July 01, 2013 at 12:02 AM ET |

I teased you all a few weeks ago, and again yesterday about this. But now is the time to reveal it. I have been saving up for Sideshow Collectibles' Darth Vader Life Size Bust for a while now. It's worked out that I could pay it off in time for our 1500th Research Droids Reviews entry – which makes my knees buckle a bit in and of itself. I can tell you however that this high-end collectible makes my knees buckle a bit more. If you only read one review on the web this year, please read this one too. It is absolutely the GREATEST high-end collectible I have ever purchased and I am at a loss for words how awesome it is indeed. Over 70 images of it follow by clicking the banner below.

In perfect timing, JTA would also like to wish David Prowse, the man who IS Darth Vader, a very happy 78th birthday today (78 is also a very important "Hasbro" number too as far as Darth Vader is concerned). It must have been the will of the Force that we have reached our 1500th review on his July 1st birthday, especially with a collectible based on the character he portrayed. Serendipitous? No, it's the Force.

To our readers, thank you for the 4+ years support of this column. It's been tough providing a new review for everyone each and every day, but it's taught me discipline in a completely different light, which is always a great life skill set to develop I suppose. I hope you'll join us faithfully when The Black Series collection starts hitting. You can rest assured we will be making them a priority.

Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Thank you JK at YF.com for the awesome banner concept for this very special piece.

Review: Darth Vader - Premium Format Figure

Posted by Paul | June 30, 2013 at 08:22 AM ET |

The best word to describe the Darth Vader Premium Format Figure would most likely be "refined". This high-end collectible is a gorgeous "museum quality" piece with jaw-dropping artistry and brilliant attention to details (especially that beautiful cape). See this mixed media collectible from many angles in our Research Droids Reviews today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Darth Vader (Premium Format Figure)

I have been in the business of collecting toys for a while now. I know that prototype images will often (and sometimes dramatically) differ from production figures, but I really have to take exception with The Black Series 6" line. I feel I have been falsely advertised a product that I had high hopes for and have been let down with the recent "final" in-package images that have leaked on eBay and other sources. And call me a conspiracy theorist, is it just me, or have you noticed that Hasbro has used all of the prototype images to promote this line? Our friends at The Astromech Collection have put together an incredible side by side image on our Facebook page that we're going to show you here. See all the shortcuts that were taken on R2-D2 from this so-called "high-end collector-focused" line. Look at all of the important paint details that were cut. It's very sad. Hasbro needs to step up this line if it is to have a future that will engage and keep adult collectors. Click through for the let down.

Shaking Things Up A Bit - Approaching The Star Wars "Saga" Line

Posted by Paul | June 29, 2013 at 07:02 PM ET |

Jedi Temple Archives is first and foremost eagerly gearing up for The Black Series lines as well as some of the Star Wars [Darth Vader/Revenge Of The Sith] line too for our reviews. But for "in-between" filler, we will be looking at the 2002-2004 Star Wars "Saga" line to keep the RDRs running. (more....)

Posted by Paul | June 29, 2013 at 07:41 AM ET |

New Sections Now Open For the Upcoming 2013 Products

Posted by Chuck | June 28, 2013 at 03:05 PM ET |

The time for new figures to hit the shelves is fast approaching! We just finished laying the groundwork for these to be added to the archives by opening up two new sections in both our Visual Guides and Research Droids Reviews! Make sure to stop by our new Visual Guide for The Black Series to keep up-to-date on the latest figure listings, and keep an eye on our Research Droids Reviews as we add these to the database as soon as they are available. You can also find all our listings for the new Star Wars [Darth Vader/Revenge of the Sith] series on its Visual Guide page, and its corresponding Research Droids Review index is ready to go as well!

With special thanks to our friends at BanthaSkull.com for tipping us off, StarWarsFiguren.com has an out of the box picture of the Ewok Assault Catapult set. It looks great, but what's up with the paint jobs on the Ewoks?!

Review: Darth Vader (Star Wars Animated) (Black & White Edition)

Posted by Paul | June 28, 2013 at 05:24 AM ET |

This isn't Groundhog Day, so don't think you're looking at yesterday's RDR. The third focus on Darth Vader is the Darth Vader (Star Wars Animated) (Black & White Edition) Maquette. With a tiny edition size of 500 pieces, it's highly sought after and very hard to find on the aftermarket. See it in our Research Droids Reviews today! Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Posted by Paul | June 27, 2013 at 07:47 AM ET |

The Black Series: What We Can Expect For The Rest Of 2013

Posted by Paul | June 26, 2013 at 11:58 AM ET |

JTA reader Peter K. asked us to distill all of the confirmed and rumored figures for The Black Series 3.75" line and we thought that was a brilliant idea. We gathered all of the information for you and put together a list of four waves. The last two waves in the list will absolutely change and the second wave while still unconfirmed by Hasbro is a pretty safe bet. Just to be fair and clear the air, until Hasbro announces anything beyond wave 1 officially at San Diego Comic Con, none of us should be counting those chickens until the eggs hatch. Please click through and view what we should expect to see before the end of 2013.

Review: Darth Vader [Episode III] - Mini Bust

Posted by Paul | June 26, 2013 at 06:08 AM ET |

We begin a one week focus on Darth Vader collectibles starting now. The Darth Vader [Episode III] Mini Bust is excellent, although it's technically based on Revenge Of The Sith promotional images and not the character that appears in the film. Sorry Hasbro, It Is Still All About The Vintage Collection!

Posted by Paul | June 25, 2013 at 05:41 PM ET |

It's literally crazy. When we should be getting excited about San Diego Comic Con exclusives and new products from Hasbro later this summer, it seems that all of us are just really preoccupied with filling the holes and/or stocking up on the wonderful figures from The Vintage Collection. JTA reader Stuart S. writes in with a marvelous find in the UK and I personally have to admit that Stuart's experience brought me more joy and elation than the announcement of the first two waves of TBS. His local Williams & Griffin has loaded up on some of the hardest American Hasbro TVC figures out there. Click through for this incredible story! Sorry Hasbro, it's still ALL ABOUT The Vintage Collection and The Black Series pales in comparison. It will likely be this way for a very long time. In fact, it may never cease.

Review: Clone Trooper [Utapau Trooper] - Mini Bust

Posted by Paul | June 25, 2013 at 07:33 AM ET |

As fate would have it, the best phase II Clone Trooper Mini Bust was the one with the smallest edition size: the Utapau Trooper. Posted by Paul | June 24, 2013 at 06:03 AM ET |

Gentle Giant Ltd. tackled the phase II clones by releasing three uniquely decorated troopers under the same edition size. While an admirable effort, some tweaking was needed before the production products got finalized. This definitely applies to the Clone Trooper (501st Special Ops Trooper). TARGET Gives Up On Hasbro's Re-envisioned Class II Line

Posted by Paul | June 20, 2013 at 05:59 PM ET |

Well, it has officially begun. TARGET's short attention span on the products they sell has activated the inevitable. While it would be easy to claim this was Hasbro's fault by changing the scale and quality of the Class II line, it's likely just TARGET getting ready for the Fall. Click through for the proof. Sideshow Collectibles Declines Offering SDCC Exclusives This Year

Posted by Paul | June 19, 2013 at 11:28 PM ET |

In March we broke the news that Sideshow Collectibles had quietly cancelled the release of the "all clean" C-3PO Life Size Bust. It was odd for multiple reasons. Up to that point, Sideshow Collectibles would never reveal a product and place it on pre-order only to cancel it. It's too far along in the process at that point. What made it more odd was that their reason for cancelling it was because they couldn't replicate the paint operations from the prototype. Sideshow Collectible "can't" replicate the paint operations of the prototype? We don't think so. There has to be something more here. Now, CoolToyReview.com is reporting that Sideshow Collectibles has bowed out of offering a San Diego Comic Con exclusive this year. WHAT?! This is unprecedented and VERY disappointing. And quite frankly it makes no sense. While there is nothing more we can do than speculate at what's going on, it does make us wonder if we have room to worry about what their future plans are for products under the Star Wars branding. What are your thoughts?

UPDATE: Sideshow has confirmed via their Twitter feed that there will indeed be no SDCC exclusives this year. They have also stated that in lieu of any SDCC exclusives they will be offering other exclusives throughout the year from both themselves and Hot Toys. But that is a silly statement to make. This of course means that the only difference is that there will be no 2013 SDCC exclusives as originally stated because they release exclusive products throughout the year regardless. Um, Mythos anyone? It still makes us wonder what is going on over there.

Multiple Additional Tuesday Morning Naboo Starfighter Finds!

Posted by Paul | June 19, 2013 at 11:05 PM ET |

We are still receiving reports from JTA readers that they're successfully finding the 2012 Class II Naboo Starfighter wave. I for one have been completely unsuccessful. It must be the will of the Force not allowing me to find a sealed one for my colleciton. I personally called 12 locations "near" me and not one had any of them in stock or even received them (or so they say). But it may be worth your while to call your local store and see what they have. Remember, these are only $14.99 at the register. What a crime that these never made it out to regular retail. (Special thanks to JTA reader Eric T. for the image of his find.)

Is There NOW Room For Concern? Production Luke Hits eBay :(

Posted by Paul | June 18, 2013 at 06:15 PM ET |

Uh-oh. I am getting concerned now with the 6" The Black Series line. eBay seller viperskingdom has a production figure available of Luke Skywalker (X-wing Pilot) in his eBay store, but look closely at the figure. It's likeness is quite disappointing. And why did they paint his flesh tones instead of cast it in that color. Color me sad. It still may be too soon to be concerned, but this figure needs more work, especially for $20.

UPDATE: Darth Maul and R2-D2 are also listed. I don't know folks. I am really disappointed with the production figures.

"Exclusive" The Black Series 6 Inch Wave 2 Greedo Reveal

Posted by Paul | June 17, 2013 at 03:18 PM ET |

In typical Entertainment Earth fashion, they are milking their "exclusive" reveal of Greedo from wave 2 of the 6" The Black Series wave by showing a portion of its development over the next few weeks. Can they drag it out more? Unless you're completely asleep at the wheel, flyguy.net has already discovered these upcoming figures. So far, EE has shown the initial stages of Greedo's development. Click through if you're interested. To be fair, they do have a great image showing the analysis of Greedo that licensees use to bring the collectibles to life, a blue print of sorts.

If You Liked It Then You Should Have Put A Ring On It....

Posted by Paul | June 14, 2013 at 02:56 PM ET |

Here is something fun to look at that falls between stupid to very humorous. There is a flickr album that could easily be titled "Star Wars Karaoke", although the author of these antics also includes GI Joe and Lord Of The Rings figures too. Definitely worth checking out. TIP: Make sure you look at the song title at the bottom of the image post, otherwise, you won't have the melody in your head when you read the parodied lyrics!

We're not the only ones who have felt the wrath of the distribution Sith. Our French friends at ToyzMag.com are reporting that just now, for the very first time, they are getting the Starkiller/Shae Vizla wave (as well as a few others). Click through for their report!

Review: Holographic Qui-Gon Jinn - Mini Bust (Celebration Japan)

Posted by Paul | June 14, 2013 at 08:54 AM ET |

Review: Clone Commander Cody - TCW [SOTDS] - CW03 (Variation!)

Posted by Paul | June 12, 2013 at 06:18 AM ET |

This is a very different RDR today. I look at a pretty much unknown variation (however not rare) of The Clone Wars Clone Commander Cody action figure that I actually didn't know existed until I was brought in to co-author The Utimate Action Figure Collection by Steve Sansweet. Interestingly, I couldn't find one sample anywhere until recently, as I searched aimlessly for the Naboo Starfighter at Tuesday Morning (no luck on that one). I speak from personal experience and give you a few inside details about making the book, as I talk smack about GalacticHunter.com and Yakface.com (and maybe a few other sites as well.... maybe). Please join me for a very differently oriented Research Droids Reviews entry today! Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! A TARGET Investigation That Will Illuminate And Devastate!

Posted by Paul | June 10, 2013 at 07:05 PM ET |

JTA reader Eric S. has really done his homework for us! After seeing our report on The Black Series 3.75" figures and then flyguy.net's 6" report today, he was able to take the UPC numbers and plug them into TARGET's system and get clear answers to what these figures are and where the came from as a follow up to our original TARGET report (found here)! Click through for this VERY INFORMATIVE report! For example, we know the status of the Luke Skywalker (ROTJ) figure and sadly it's not what you think it is! Will The Black Series Have An Unfair Disadvantage At Launch?

Posted by Paul | June 08, 2013 at 10:45 PM ET |

JTA reader and good friend Darth_Chuck, eagerly passed on some very interesting information to me that reveals some really informative behind-the-scenes data. After he saw our report of our announcement of upcoming The Black Series figures we published from Walmart's inventory system, he performed some research of his own. While it's no cause for immediate alarm, we should still listen to what he has to say because it's interesting to say the least. He took one of the UPCs pictured in our photos and plugged it into TARGET's system and discovered a "horrible" truth. He called me by phone with the alarming news. We talked and distilled the talking points you should know. (more....)

Review: Han Solo - OTC - OTC #07

Posted by Paul | June 05, 2013 at 08:49 AM ET |

OK, so he is way overused. But we can't help not hating this figure. That doesn't mean however that we don't want to see Hasbro retire it once and for all. Check out the OTC iteration of Han Solo, a figure that didn't have a chance competing next to the VOTC figure, in our Research Droids Reviews today! Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Flipping The Hasbro Conversations

Posted by Paul | June 04, 2013 at 03:18 PM ET |

JTA reader Matt writes in with a lengthy email full of good points and some unconventional ideas for Hasbro and the Star Wars brand. While I personally don't see eye to eye with every opinion made, I understand his reasonings and why they might be good ideas, even though I am not completely sold on the ideas. I do want to hear what our other readers have to say about the topic. In a nutshell, I don't feel that 3D printing is a viable solution for Hasbro. But what do you think? Not all of us are artists and can paint them well. Plus, I am not sure Hasbro would even consider such a notion. Matt also brings up additional points of what our attitudes should be towards Hasbro, which I also agree to some extent. But not every extent. Where will you fall? Click through for more....

A Super Rare Must-Have TVC Gamorrean Guard Error/Variation!

Posted by Paul | June 03, 2013 at 07:08 PM ET |

I totally stole this news from my Facebook friend Trevor S. (sorry Trevor), but check out this uber rare worth a bajillion cajillion dollars error Gamorrean Guard from The Vintage Collection! (That is a joke friends. We have to be clear so people don't think we're a so-called Star Wars "fan site".) Anyway, this piece of pork is looking a little lean, unlike someone else I know. What is it missing pry tell? Again, enjoy checking out the error, but don't be misled. This isn't worth more than a POTF2 figure.

Review: Scout Trooper - OTC - OTC #11

Posted by Paul | June 03, 2013 at 09:06 AM ET |

Great sculpts stand the test of time. This is evident with the Scout Trooper figure that was rereleased from the Power Of The Jedi line for The Original Trilogy Collection. Far from super-articulated it is still a fantastic figure nonetheless. Add your own thoughts in our Research Droids Reviews today! Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.
