Review: Darth Vader - SW [DV/ROTS] - 12-Inch Figure

Posted by Paul | December 31, 2013 at 07:45 AM ET |

As if the reduced articulation and reduced quality of the 3.75" line wasn't enough, Hasbro also revisited the 12-Inch Figure line with the same level of detail. We end the year with Darth Vader, a figure that just should have never been made. Find out why this is so in our Research Droids Reviews today. Be sure to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Review: Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter - SW [DV/ROTS] - Vehicles

Posted by Paul | December 30, 2013 at 08:27 AM ET |

And here is the repaint! The reduced scale Class II line is really a disappointment. Hasbro seems intent on continuing it, but as you can see this means then that collectors get vehicles like Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter, which for us is an utter failure.

Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter

The title of this article is sarcastic, but it's also very sad that the Star Wars brand gets the mistreatment it always does. JTA moderator Paul B. sends us evidence that TARGET has also put The Black Series on clearance due to the DPCI debacle of having this line coded exactly the same as The Vintage Collection. Click through for the proof, and leave your thoughts on this in our comments.

A Message From Paul Harrison....

Posted by Paul | December 25, 2013 at 06:08 PM ET |

Dearest readers. I hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas today. I know I have had a wonderful holiday myself and it's been nice having a white Christmas in the sticks of upstate NY catching up with family. Sadly, I experienced a small tragedy last night. While walking through my parents cabin, I accidentally dropped my laptop and it's now history. I don't want to burden you with my personal issue, but because of this, I have no way of continuing RDRs or more complicated news articles until further notice. I haven't been able to access any JTA email for almost 48 hours, and I had quite a few important emails that I haven't handled or responded to yet. In particular, I had about a dozen Q&A questions that I no longer have. Because I will most likely be able to continue the Q&A without a computer, if you have not had your questions answered, would you mind sending them to me again if you're one of these readers? It looks like the Q&A will be the only thing I can do until further notice. But hopefully I will be back up sooner than that. Any recent messages from colleagues should also be resent too. Thank you.

Just Call Him Darth Malgi.... Because He Is Almost A Peg-Warmer Now!

Posted by Paul | December 23, 2013 at 01:38 PM ET |

See that thumbnail below? It's an American store report! Repeat. This is an American store report. Who would have thought that almost 2 full years later one of the "rarest" figures would become one of the most common. (Actually.... We did!) Look at this display of Darth Malgi.... and enjoy or get enraged, or however you respond to the horrid distribution and senseless case assortments of the Star Wars collector line. Special thanks to Corey at The WolfPack Podcast for the incredible report. Click through for more!

TARGET Goes Scrooge Right Before Christmas

Posted by Paul | December 23, 2013 at 01:02 PM ET |

OK, so the 10% off this weekend was a nice gesture to help make up from potential identity theft, but did they really have to do this? From their corporate office, TARGET is not price matching from now until after the holidays. I don't have exact details, but I feel this is a picture perfect example of penny wise, pound foolish! If you do successfully price match today or tomorrow (at the very least), it's because the store didn't convey the memo to their staff.

Review: Darth Vader (Bespin Duel) - SW [S - P1] - '02 #30

Posted by Paul | December 23, 2013 at 12:04 AM ET |

The Darth Vader (Bespin Duel) is aesthetically incorrect, but the accessories that come with him are the true reason you'll want to buy this action figure. A Somewhat Recent Rare Running Change That You May Not Know About

Posted by Paul | December 22, 2013 at 08:40 PM ET |

Back in April 2010, before we had the audience that we have now (meaning the report we made didn't spread that far throughout the community), we exclusively reported about a super-rare variation of the Darth Krayt/Sigel Dare Comic Packs set. A running change to this set was made in wave 2 of the red Legacy Collection Comic Packs line, as the set was carried forward, that almost immediately evaporated from store shelves. The reason this running change is rare is because wave 2 (Tholme/Ulic Qel-Droma/Exar Kun) barely arrived at retail. You can read the original report HERE, but simply put, Hasbro COMPLETELY reinvented the paint operations on Sigel Dare's face (and even changed the color of her armor a bit) which allowed her to look pretty darn attractive and making the Comic Packs set ultimately worth it. We say all that to let you know that we have finally updated the gallery from 2009 in our review of the piece. It now sports a 32 image gallery with plenty of notes why you need this set if you're a fan of the Star Wars: Legacy comic series. The set goes for RIDICULOUS money on eBay, but if you bookmark the link, you may be able to grab it for a deal. But getting the rare variation with improved paint operations? Well, good luck on that! Check out our updated RDR HERE.

Look what could've been! Ugh, seeing images like this makes me pine for the return of Droid Factory/Build A Droid. It would have been so much more exciting to collect Padmé Amidala in the Legacy Collection [2] line instead. We certainly didn't support this thought however, as the Droid Factory exclusive at Amazon.com bombed, but had these army builders (shown on the revise side of her card back) been released as "un-forced" basic figures, I am sure they would have been more successful in general and for everyone involved. Enjoy the pics of this "cancelled" figure from our confidential source. And Hasbro, if you're watching, please either get this line back or just make everyone happy and bring The Vintage Collection back. Thank you!

I know the placement of her hair drastically affects the appearance of this character, but this one has thrown me for a loop. Special thanks to JTA reader Mike C. for sending us links to photos of his samples, and hopefully we will have an answer soon. Click through for more.

The Vintage Collection Mid Size Vehicles On Sale In The UK

Posted by Paul | December 16, 2013 at 06:52 PM ET |

JTA reader Matt H. from the UK was excited to find The Vintage Collection mid-size vehicles for 20% off. Apparently these weren't that common in the UK? Someone will have to clarify that for me. Matt writes"Hi guys - another cool find for UK collectors.... picked this up in the Entertainer (nationwide chain of toystores)
V-19 Torrent Starfighter in vintage packaging for £20. They also had Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter for the same price."
Hope that helps out some of our UK readers.

Review: Bossk (Bounty Hunter) - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figure

Posted by Paul | December 16, 2013 at 06:35 AM ET |

So, we're now a bit concerned with how Gentle Giant Ltd. is approaching the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line now. Let us analyze Bossk (Bounty Hunter) for you and see why it isn't accurate to the 1980 3.75" figure. It's making us a bit sad. Artistic license is cool, but it should probably stay out of this line. It's all in our Research Droids Reviews today. Be sure to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. It Is Incredible When Retail Shows Grace

Posted by Paul | December 14, 2013 at 01:20 PM ET |

Although we posted the Thursday alert that the Toys R Us exclusive TVC X-wing Fighter was $40 only one day/only in-store, I couldn't take advantage of the deal because (a) my local TRU was sold out of it and (b) I didn't have time to stop at a further store. However, this morning I had time to drive to the further store and graciously asked if they could match the deal advertised on Thursday only and explained my reasons why I couldn't pick it up on Thursday. (I actually showed her the JTA article as the proof!) Well, she obliged and I was able to take advantage of this great price. She even noticed a crush on one of the corners and ensured that is was OK. After all was said and done with a $10 coupon, I ended up paying $35 each for them Click through for the proof. (I will be filling out the customer service survey for sure!

It Almost Feels Like Pulling The Wool Over Their Eyes....

Posted by Paul | December 14, 2013 at 01:11 PM ET |

To my shock, I found the very first signs of The Black Series 3.75" line in my local TARGET today. Hey, it's December, but better late than ever though, huh? (I found a complete set of wave 2.) Well, I was at the register as the clerk was ringing them up for $9.99 each until I had a mid-transaction epiphany. I asked her to stop and that I needed these price-matched to Amazon.com. The Guest Service clerk did a cursory search on her iPad and saw a whole bunch listed for $3.30 each. Guess what? I got all of them for that price, including Mara Jade. I didn't even ask. She just didn't want to be bothered. She said Amazon.com was killing them this year. I am telling you. Online will be the death of brick and mortar soon. Click through for the proof.

A Disturbing Package Arrival....

Posted by Paul | December 14, 2013 at 01:05 PM ET |

Probably everyone at this point knows my position on Angry Birds toy-related garbage. I have to say I was mortally freaked out when I arrived home from work yesterday only to see a box at my front step from AngryBirds.com. When I opened the box, my fears were realized when I found a super-huge Angry Birds Luke Skywalker (X-wing) Bird pillow. I have know idea how this made its way to me. It was addressed to JTA, and then my own personal home address. No individual name, no nothing. Needless to say, I am getting rid of it ASAP. It's scaring me! Maybe it's an early April Fools' joke. I don't know.

Despite what efforts have been made to alert the public that the all-white phase II clone troopers are indeed in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith, many fans still seem to believe that they weren't in the film. (They are. They're standing behind Mace Windu and Obi-Wan Kenobi inside of a Republic Gunship. See any of our all-white clone trooper reviews for this proof.) Anyway, I have personally just come across a scene from Episode III, (for the very first time) where we can see two all-white clone troopers working on top of a Republic Gunship in the hangar where Obi-Wan Kenobi has his first conversation with Clone Commander Cody after returning from rescuing Senator Palpatine. This is the first time where we can see the entire character from head to toe, and not just a portion of him. Click through for the film still to see this yourself!

Hopefully this is a rough inital factory pressing before the machines were calibrated. Mamma mia!

Curto Burns Collectors Cast

Posted by Paul | December 04, 2013 at 10:00 PM ET |

It’s been a long time coming (James' trip to San Francisco for 10 days as well as his crazy 15-16 hour working days has got in the way in getting this out) but it’s here now...

Recorded in late October/early November Dan Curto and James Burns talk about all the news from New York Comic Con, all the latest products available to buy or pre-order as well as catching up and talking to Steve Sansweet about the upcoming (although it’s already happened) party to celebrate the induction of Rancho Obi-Wan into the 2104 Guinness World Records. There’s lots more news besides and it’s time to tune in and catch up!

Fear not, we’ll have another show out before Christmas along with a special announcement too!

Amazon.com Still Listing Many Current Figures at Near Half Off

Posted by Chuck | December 03, 2013 at 10:42 AM ET |

Keep an eye on Amazon.com this month as many of The Black Series 3 3/4" and 6" figures are still listed almost at half price. The Sandtrooper is currently listed at $11.24! Also of note, the Mission Series are half off as well. If you were holding out on these because of their limited articulation, now they are less than $3 per figure! With free shipping it's hard to beat this over running around to the stores. Keep in mind Amazon's track record on shipping though if you are a carded collector. Might be worth sending these as 'gifts' so they potentially package them better.

Review: Darth Vader (Sith Apprentice) - 1:6 Scale Figures

Posted by Paul | December 03, 2013 at 07:59 AM ET |

We conclude our 1:6 Scale Figure "catch-up" marathon with some evil. Darth Vader (Sith Apprentice) was an easy release for Sideshow Collectibles, but he does look pretty cool. But he isn't completely perfect, so learn why this is so in our Research Droids Reviews today. Hasbro Corrects The Black Series Han Solo 6-inch Yellowed Wrists Issue

Posted by Paul | December 02, 2013 at 11:29 AM ET |

It is amazing to me how Hasbro sneaks in corrections to their products without kicking much dust up in the air. I has just come across a fix to The Black Series 6" Han Solo figure. When I shot the sample I received for our RDRs, I was immediately put off by the incorrectly colored "yellow" wrist sections especially next to the flesh colored hand attachments. I just came across a sample in stores today where that issue has been remedied. Comparison pictures are available for you to see by clicking through.

A New Source For Straggling The Vintage Collection Figures?

Click through to see this slightly "old" post, but you never know if this information will lead you to reap great rewards when it comes to TVC figures!

Review: Rebel Commando (Sergeant: Endor) - 1:6 Scale Figure

Posted by Paul | December 02, 2013 at 08:17 AM ET |

We Are Over The 5 Million Mark Now!

Posted by Paul | December 01, 2013 at 06:00 PM ET |

The point of this post is twofold. Firstly, we just compiled our stats for November and as of December 1st we're thrilled to announce that we have hit 5.1 million hits in our RDR database. That means very much to us, so thank you. Secondly, while on vacation, I updated some of our older galleries including figures from Star Wars [Shadow Of The Dark Side], The Vintage Collection, and The Legacy Collection. Some of you may have seen some of these sneak peek updates on our Facebook page, but click through to see what I've updated. Once again, thank you and I hope you enjoy some of the new galleries.

Review: Rebel Commando (Infantryman: Endor) - 1:6 Scale Figure

But Rebel Commando (Infantryman: Endor) is about one of the nicest figures from the entire line. See why we love it and why you should make him a permanent fixture in your own collection. It's all in our Research Droids Reviews today. Be sure to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page.
