Hasbro Star Wars Fan First Wednesday: The Black Series Reveals

Here are the Black Series reveals from today’s fan first livestream. To say there are somewhat underwhelming is probably an understatement. Unless you’ve always wanted an all white Darth Vader figure maybe… Click through for all the reveals!

The most exciting reveal

Ok, let’s begin with the positive things first!

He was a pipeline figure before, so his reveal is not a surprise really, but here is Saw Gerrera from Rogue One:

As you can see he comes in one of those boxes that are mostly empty air with two measly accessories, which can only mean one thing: Saw is a “deluxe” figure. Which means he’s all new tooling and Hasbro won’t be able to reuse it left and right. But his carbonized credit collection figure will probably come eventually! In my opinion Hasbro should really stop using these oversized boxes of mostly empty air for their deluxe line. Didn’t Hasbro want to minimize the use of plastic in their packaging? This is just a waste of resources. He would easily fit inside a standard box. At least the figure itself looks fantastic and the many details on his outfit are amazing. Hasbro can knock it out of the park if the bean counters let the design team do their thing!

He’ll be available through all the usual channels, so he’s not exclusive. Tentative release date is “winter 2022”. Like for all the other figures pre-orders go live tomorrow, April 7th, at 1 pm Eastern!

Next up is another Gaming Greats repaint figure. RC-1207 from Republic Commando!

Let’s see how long it takes for that Hunter mould to wear out… this is yet another Bad Batch repaint figure. Hole in the gauntlet most likely included. But if you like clones, this is yet another addition to the ever increasing roster of clones. He’s a Gamestop exclusive, as expected. He too will be available sometime in winter 2022. Pre-order is also tomorrow April 7th, 1pm EST.

Then Hasbro revealed three comic book figures, you know what that means, more or less inaccurate kitbashes and repaints.

First up is the Abominable Snowman in his Darth Vader disguise:

Hasbro is not even trying anymore. But if you wanted an all white Darth Vader, this is your chance! He’s sourced from Infinities, a redeemed Vader who rejoins the Jedi.

Moving on…
Next up is a somewhat more interesting figure, it’s Princess Leia from the old Marvel comics, she has a new-ish head, kind of, it mostly seems to be Endor Leia with some added hair in the back, the hairstyle overall is very inaccurate though, the figure has a new holster and what seems like new gloves, other than that the figure is mostly a re-used Hoth/Bespin escape Leia with Geonosis Padme’s cape thrown in. Tooling is expensive, after all.

It’s always so funny when the art they use shows you immediately how inaccurate the kitbashed figure is. But as far as Leia figures go this is certainly an interesting variant. And probably different enough from the Hoth / Bespin escape figures to warrant a buy from many collectors.

And here’s Leia out of the box:

Despite all the inaccurate reuse still a good looking figure! I only wish the hairstyle was more accurate and not Endor Leia 2.0 with some hair extensions. And Hasbro even talked about the hair, yet they didn’t recreate the comic book style here at all.

And then there’s Sergeant Kreel, a unique Stormtrooper with a name and a lightsaber. He has received some new tooling, a new torso and chest, everything else is reuse. But he looks at least like a fun figure. Even though he too is not really accurate to the source material:

The box art tells you immediately that this is just an approximation of Kreel’s actual look.

All three comic book figures will be available in “spring 2023”, so you’ll have to wait a long, long time to get them. Pre-order is April 7th, 1 pm EST, like all the other figures. Good luck with securing your figure!

And finally, Hasbro had two pipeline reveals for the Black Series, yet another Grogu and a season 1 version of Migs Mayfeld, they most likely won’t be released before mid or late 2023:

All in all that was a pretty lackluster livestream for Black Series collectors. One overpriced deluxe figure, yet another Bad Batch repaint clone and three more or less inaccurate looking comic book figures, at least Leia and Kreel are somewhat interesting, with Leia certainly the most desirable figure of them all. I will skip everything but Saw Gerrera (unless the fake deluxe tax is too ridiculous) and probably Leia. I have no need for lazy repaints or inaccurate kitbashes.
