The Book Of Boba Fett Nielsen Streaming Charts - The Finale

Nielsen has finally added the last Book of Boba Fett episode to the streaming charts. So how popular was the series? Did more people watch it than the Mandalorian season 2 finale? Click through for the final update!

Let’s recap the previous weeks: the series started out pretty strong with more than 550 million minutes streamed with just one episode, but after episode 3 the numbers declined, which is not a good thing at all, since the number of minutes streamed should, in theory, increase as more episodes are added. However, the trend reversed with episodes 5 and 6 which accumulated around 750 million minutes streamed. And remember, this is for all episodes combined.

The finale gives The Book of Boba Fett its strongest numbers, which is not totally unexpected: according to Nielsen the series accumulated 885 million minutes. Which is really good, but a little worse than WandaVision or Loki and only 2/3 of what the Mandalorian season 2 finale had on the Nielsen Streaming Charts: 1.3 billion minutes. Book of Boba Fett faces some stiff competition, so the 885 million minutes are good enough for #5 on the charts. Amazon Prime has a rare blockbuster hit with Reacher, which rises to the top with almost 1.6 billion minutes streamed in the US. All other entries are once again Netflix shows of course.

So it’s nothing really surprising here. The Book of Boba Fett did pretty well overall, it was the #1 rated series on Disney+, it outclassed a few Marvel series, it did much better than the Bad Batch of course (which disappeared from the charts after episode 2), but failed to reach the numbers of The Mandalorian. But I don’t think anyone expected The Book of Boba Fett to outperform The Mandalorian.

If this was traditional network tv The Book of Boba Fett would certainly get a new season, since its numbers are pretty good. Despite all the discussions about structure, narrative and whether or not Boba is out of character, the series itself was quite popular, of course much of that is owed to the addition of Din Djarin and his friends. But streaming follows a different logic, it’s also about how many new subscribers a series brings in and there are various other factors at play here too that determine of a series has a future or not.

It will be interesting to see how Kenobi will compare to The Book of Boba Fett. We will also get Andor later this year, as well as Bad Batch season 2, and The Mandalorian season 3 will be released towards the end of 2022. So, we will have four Star Wars series in total in 2022, which should offer something for almost anyone.

If The Book of Boba Fett gets a second season Jon Favreau should retool the series and main character somewhat. The series needs bigger stakes, Boba should also be less of a very reasonable pacifist again and of course the series should actually be about Boba Fett, not the Mandalorian. Structure was a big issue and the plot was quite a mess, abandoning the alleged core character in the second half of the season in favor of Din Djarin, Grogu and Luke Skywalker. But overall both Boba and Fennec are strong characters that could absolutely carry a season 2. But the action would need to move away from Tatooine, since this planet has few new things to offer after Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett and Kenobi all feature the desert planet.

And that’s it. We will most likely reconvene sometime in June when Nielsen will release its first numbers for Kenobi. And of course you will be able to read my review for the series come May!
