It’s the weekly Nielsen streaming charts update for The Book of Boba Fett! As mentioned previously, the Nielsen streaming charts have a delay of about 4 weeks, so the most recent charts include episodes 1- 3, even though the season finale aired last Wednesday. So how does the series fare after three episodes? There are good and bad news this week. Click through for both!
The good news first: The Book of Boba Fett remains the most popular show on Disney+ and also maintains its position in the charts with a solid 5th place. Cobra Kai is still in 1st place, but losing ground rapidly.
Now the bad news: viewership for The Book of Boba Fett (the total number of minutes watched) declined after episode 3. It was 539 million minutes last week, which included episodes 1 and 2, but it’s down to 467 million minutes with episode 3 added. Episode 3 was yet another episode directed by Robert Rodriguez and it was widely made fun of because of the very weird and odd looking slow motion scooter chase. Something which apparently had an effect on the ratings.
So despite one more episode (Nielsen counts the total number of minutes viewed for all available episodes, not individual episodes) the number of minutes streamed declined. Now this is not entirely unexpected. Reaction to the early episodes was quite mixed. Episode 3 in particular was made fun of because of some really weird editing and badly staged action scenes. Some fans loved the early episodes though, many however were confused and after the honeymoon period of episodes 1 and 2 quite a few people decided to tune out. I suppose this trend will continue with episode 4. Now the big question is how much of a comeback the show will have with episodes 5 and 6, especially episode 6 which focused heavily on Luke Skywalker and Grogu. But we won’t know for another two to three weeks.
But nevertheless, the early episodes of The Book of Boba Fett are still moderately successful, it is the most popular show on Disney+, but doesn’t quite reach the stratospheric heights of The Mandalorian and is, at least with episodes 1-3, trailing behind most of the Marvel shows. A trend that most likely will reverse with later episodes. So make no mistake, this is not a flop, it’s still pretty popular, just not as popular after episode 3 as other shows. But popular enough to be the only Disney+ show in the charts which is otherwise completely dominated by Netflix. We will see how the ratings will develop with future episodes! The numbers however are a clear sign that The Book of Boba Fett, despite being the most popular show on Disney+, lost quite a bit of viewers early in the season and that quite a few fans were probably not satisfied with the quality.
