JTA reader JW was inspired by our article yesterday to Photoshop the newly announced Paploo body with the head sculpt and cowl from the 2009 Legacy Collection figure. We think it looks infinitely better. Hasbro captured the likeness of that Ewok well in 2009, and has more screen-accuracy than a repainted or tweaked Logray head sculpt. Click the thumbnail below to see what it looks like. The new figure has much too long of a cowl, and this one is shortened a bit. And don’t forget about that better likeness. What do you think? (We watermarked the image to let everyone know this is a modified image.)

Well, here is something a little shocking. Did you know that The Vintage Collection TIE Fighter Pilot (VC65) REISSUE is really a new character in the lineup, and shouldn’t be counted as a reissue of the original VC65 figure from 2011? For unknown reasons, Hasbro repacked Lieutenant Oxixo as the 2021 TVC TIE Fighter Pilot reissue instead of the figure with the solid black helmet. Will there be a running change? Because this is incorrect. Lieutenant Oxixo needs a new VC number and new card art – it’s a new character for the line. If Rebel Fleet Trooper gets both a VC52 and a VC183 number and it’s the same figure, then a generic TIE Fighter Pilot and Lieutenant Oxixio need two unique numbers between them! The figure received a couple of other enhancements aside from the obvious. The Photo Real on this figure is not bad. But there are other things. We took the time to break it all down for you by producing an all-new 76-image gallery complete with both versions (2011 and 2021) featured, comparison shots, and a breakdown of what separates the two releases in the Collector Notes. Check out this confusing re-release in our RDRs now! There’s more difference here than you may realize.

Walmart has marked down the LEGO Star Wars 501st Legion Clone Troopers. It’s not a huge price drop but if you need to army build some 501st troopers and Battle Droids for about $4 each (plus the vehicles) then it helps!. Thanks to JTA reader Mike for the alert!

The Vintage Collection Queen Amidala (VC84), also part of the “worst reissue wave ever,” has also never looked better. Frankly, the figure is a work of art. (It was in 2012 too.) It received a couple of enhancements. The Photo Real on this figure is absolutely mesmerizing. Hasbro did something new today. They actually revealed some of the figures that are in the pipeline for 2021 or 2022 even. This is something many fans have asked for for a long time, to learn what Hasbro has lined-up. No actual figures, digital sculpts or anything really were shown, but Hasbro revealed which characters will come to The Black Series. And there are quite a few interesting choices! Hasbro added a new segment to their livestream this time: Pipeline reveals. There’s no product to show, but just giving us a look at what’s coming this fall and into 2022. For The Vintage Collection we were shown two upcoming figures: 

• IG-11 (The Mandalorian)
• Lando Calrissian (The Empire Strikes Back)

The very first Fan First Friday of the new year just ended and a big focus for The Black Series was the Lucasfilm 50th anniversary event. The Black Series will get  several figures in the 50th anniversary line, almost all of them repacks/repaints. One figure gets a retooled photoreal headsculpt however! The Droid Depot Droids multipack features two all-new sculpts for the Disney line. Based on characters from Galaxy’s Edge, this five-pack is colorful, diverse, and comes with one massive droid. It also includes a new R1 unit in the same color scheme as the character we see in A New Hope. Disney coincidentally made the same error on this character as Hasbro did on their version too. Toy restoration videos are quite popular on YouTube, some of them have more than a million views. YouTube channel Rescue & Restore posted a video about the complete restoration of a Kenner Millennium Falcon that had apparently sustained water damage and had yellowed with age earlier today. There is no narration or annoying music, the entire video just shows the process of restoring the toy. Click through to watch the 16 minute restoration of an iconic Star Wars toy!

Online retailer Daming Toys reveals a new assortment of The Black Series 6″ Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary figures. The retailer claims these will be packaged in mock-ups of the character’s original debut line. A Jawa and Count Dooku are also part of the line.

The Vintage Collection Battle Droid (VC78), part of the “worst reissue wave ever,” was a curious release back in 2012. It’s more curious today because it’s not the best 3.75″ super-articulated Episode I Battle Droid action figure from Hasbro. The best is still from the 2011 Star Wars [Shadow of The Dark Side] Episode I Blue-ray Commemorative Edition four-pack. The figure is well-made and designed but falls short of definitive status thanks to its inhibited movement, and inability to stow the E5 blaster rifle on the backpack. Hasbro did make improvements, however, including a uniform weathered paint job. But Hasbro also employed a less rigid plastic this time, so the parts feel rubbery in places. We took the time to break it all down for you by producing an all-new 76-image gallery complete with both versions (2012 and 2021) featured, comparison shots, and a breakdown of what separates the two releases in the Collector Notes. This initiative is in place of giving collectors value for their purchases. Bobby Vala, a former seven-year employee at Hasbro was interviewed on a podcast recently. The video of it can be found HERE. He offers opinions and insights to the Hasbro Star Wars and Marvel brands explaining why we get so little with those action figures. It’s something called PERCEIVED VALUE. The Disney licensing fees are so high, that they cut out any potential opportunity of multiple portraits or interchangeable hands. And Hasbro’s GI Joe line suffers the brunt of this because of the cut back on accessories as to not make the Star Wars and Marvel lines look bad. (more….)

Earlier this week an “animated” short film about the High Repulic character Vernestra Rwoh was released on the official Star Wars YouTube channel. The clip currently has 68k views, but I don’t want to dwell on that too much. Instead I wonder what Lucasfilm was thinking when they made that clip and whether or not that says something about how much confidence they have in The High Republic book/comic series. Construction for the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience (aka the Star Wars hotel) is underway in Orlando, Florida. The Disney Food Blog released an article about the construction a short while ago and they feature photos taken on location by Jeff Vahle, the President of Walt Disney World Resort. Lucasfilm is busy constructing a huge outdoor set near Little Marlow, which is a small village in the UK. A British tabloid (The Sun) got hold of photos made by a drone flying over the set and the photo reveals the scope, it’s quite large and massive. So if you want to see the photo, then please click through. If you consider a photo of an outdoor set a spoiler, well, then just don’t click, it’s easy!

I talked about the Nielsen streaming ratings for the USA before. The Mandalorian season 2 fares really well and has been in the top 10 throughout its second season, rising as high as number 3 on the list, behind two Netflix shows. The season 2 finale which featured the return of Luke Skywalker however improves on the already good ratings by becoming the first non Netflix show ever to top Nielsen’s streaming charts. Beating “The Office” in the number 2 spot, which is still the best rated show available on Netflix.

Of course Nielsen only measures ratings in the US, so we don’t know exactly how things are worldwide. Netflix has a lot more subscribers and is available in more countries. However, it is impressive that a Disney+ show can beat any of the shows on Netflix in the US, since Netflix has more subscribers. This is yet another testament to the huge success of The Mandalorian and of course the immense popularity of Luke Skywalker. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni really are Lucasfilm’s MVPs. Now if only Hasbro capitalized on the success of the show and announced a ton of Mandalorian action figures very soon…

Something’s gotta give. This is a mere sampling of the many items from my many orders with Walmart that have been canceled without warning. The Black Series 6″ figures, The Vintage Collection figures, and Walmart exclusives have all gotten canceled. I must have over 30 cancellation emails from Walmart now. The question is whose fault is this? It’s a question we’ve never received an honest answer to from anyone.

The price is listed wrong, but here’s The Vintage Collection Incinerator Trooper Walmart exclusive figure.

Now that will shake things up for Star Wars gamers quite a bit! After years of exclusivity EA will lose its exclusive license! EA will continue developing Star Wars games, but Ubisoft will now develop an open world Star Wars game. So I suppose we can expect something in the vein of Assassin’s Creed or Watch Dogs to come to Star Wars. The new game will be developed with the help of Lucasfilm Games! Nothing else is really known about the game, but more details will certainly follow!

So, what do you think about this big news for Star Wars games? EA has a mixed track record when it comes to Star Wars games, Fallen Order received praise, but its game mechanics felt somewhat outdated and it was not an open world game, EA scrapped various open world games in the past and was unwilling to develop a huge open world game for Star Wars. Now it seems Lucasfilm finally wants a piece of the open world (single player) gaming market, a genre that is still immensenly popular despite EA’s statements from a few years ago that people no longer like these kind of games. Red Dead Redemption 2m Ghost of Tsushima or even the somewhat maligned Cyberpunk 2077, plus all the Assassin’s Creed titles etc prove that there is much demand for open world games. Of course it’s also possible, that the open world game will be an online game, i.e. without a real offline single player campaign, the exact wording Ubisoft uses is “story driven open world game”. We will have to wait for more details to emerge!

We’ve received at least a half dozen reports, and seen several reports on social media, that Walmart has been sending out cancelation notices for the TVC exclusive Din Djarin and the Child set. Keep an eye on your inbox and lets us know in the comments if yours was canceled, and when you placed your pre-order. There were several rounds of pre-orders that went up for this exclusive, and all of the emails we received all pre-ordered on the first day.

Today I want to talk about posing your action figures. I will specifically talk about the Black Series, but I suppose what I want to talk about will apply to other lines as well. I moved last year, that also meant I had to put all of my Star Wars figures into boxes only to put them back in their display cabinets and on shelves again. But I put off that task for quite a while, several months actually. Because, quite frankly, posing action figures is no fun at all to me. Why? Click through for more!

Coming to Jedi Temple Archives in 2021!

Hasbro has claimed that 2021 will be a renewed focus for the Kenner 96. And there is one character is desperate need of an update that is once again relevant in Disney Star Wars, something that makes an action figure for the character extra special. Appearing in a cameo in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, it appears Bib Fortuna is now in control of Jabba’s Palace. I just found out thanks to YouTube! (more….)
