How Much Confidence Does Lucasfilm Have In The High Republic?

Earlier this week an “animated” short film about the High Repulic character Vernestra Rwoh was released on the official Star Wars YouTube channel. The clip currently has 68k views, but I don’t want to dwell on that too much. Instead I wonder what Lucasfilm was thinking when they made that clip and whether or not that says something about how much confidence they have in The High Republic book/comic series. If you haven’t seen the clip yet (it’s only 72 seconds), you can do so right now.

I don’t want to talk about the content here (Vernestra is of course one of the youngest, best and most talented Jedi knights ever, she passed all trials at age 15), but production values.

When you watch the clip you get the feeling this is something a very young high school student did at home in 2 hours maybe. The short is basically little more than an animated powerpoint slideshow.

The High Republic is “just” a book/comic event series (at least for now) and books/comics don’t even remotely come close to the reach of movies or tv shows like The Mandalorian, but the extremely cheap animation here makes me wonder how much faith Disney or Lucasfilm have in the series. You would expect that a High Republic animated short would receive at least something on the level of Forces of Destiny or Galaxy of Adventures, i.e. actual animation.

Why someone at Lucasfilm greenlit the video and why it was posted on the Star Wars YouTube channel is puzzling. Fanmade animated Star Wars shorts have higher quality. But apparently Lucasfilm was not willing to invest any money at all in this short. So the question is how much faith they have in the success and profitability of The High Republic.

And the other thing is that the reaction to this clip on YouTube has been rather negative, not just based on the content, which is always a matter of taste and opinion, but also the lack of any production values was pointed out many times.

What do you make of it all? Do you think it’s ok for Lucasfilm to release these extremely low budget video vignettes about High Republic characters? Or do you think the apparent lack of any funds at all is unbefitting Star Wars and may do more harm than good, because it looks and feels so cheap?

In my opinion Lucasfilm should either fully commit to High Republic animated video vignettes in the style of Forces of Destiny / Galaxy of Adventures at least or not release any shorts at all. What do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
