1984 RETURN OF THE JEDI Paploo: Trilogo Update

In 1984, new packaging for Star Wars figures was introduced for the European market. A cost containment initiative, the new packaging sported three languages of the Return Of The Jedi logo for a “one size fits all” approach. Although a “three-logo” design was created for The Power Of The Force line (as evidenced on some ‘boxed’ toys), it wasn’t carried over to the basic figure line’s card design. They continued to use the three Return Of The Jedi logos instead. Although the word “Trilogo” is found nowhere on the packaging, the term is universally adopted by all Star Wars collectors to describe this line of figures.

Today we revisit Paploo. Just like the Kenner version, the Trilogo card art also erroneously features a reference image of Romba instead of Paploo. Also, the name “pill” humorously has the subtitle of “Action Figure” added. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1984’s RETURN OF THE JEDI Paploo figure HERE.

A Full Episode Of Star Wars Detours Has Leaked!

An episode of Star Wars Detours has leaked on Reddit. Star Wars Detours was one of the last projects by Lucasfilm before the acquisition by Disney. Two full seasons, 39 episodes, were produced and are fully finished. However, after the acquisition the project was canned and no episode was ever released. Star Wars Detours was a project by the Robot Chicken creators and is a full on Star Wars parody set in the time between the prequels and the original trilogy.

But a few hours ago a full episode was leaked on the Star Wars Leaks Reddit. The episode is about wannabe bounty hunters 4-LOM and Zuckuss trying to rob Dex’s diner on Coruscant. Runtime is  less than 7 minutes. Voice actors, among others, are Billy Dee Williams (in a cameo as Lando), Ahmed Best (as Jar Jar, of course) and Breckin Meyer as Boba Fett (also a cameo). And before you wonder, of course the show is not canon.
Check out the video soon, before it gets taken down by Lucasfilm. And then leave your thoughts about Detours in the comments! In my opinion it’s probably best the show was canned at the time, while it’s not “bad” it feels somewhat out of place. However, maybe Disney can finally release the episodes on Disney+ or their Star Wars Kids YouTube channel. It could be fun for the kids. There are a few good chuckles in the episode, but watch for yourself! Click here or on the screenshot below to go to the Reddit thread with the video!

1984 RETURN OF THE JEDI Lumat: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit Lumat. The Trilogo card art is nearly identical to the Kenner version. The name, however, is different. The Trilogo figure is called Lumat Ewok Warrior (Figurine Guerriere Ewok). See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1984’s RETURN OF THE JEDI Lumat figure HERE.

Marvel Comics Cancels The Rise Of Skywalker Comic

Comic book adaptations of Star Wars movies have a long tradition. But it seems The Rise of Skywalker may get no comic book adaptation from Marvel. Marvel has canceled the #1 issue of The Rise of Skywalker which was originally meant to be released in June, before the pandemic. There’s still a chance Marvel may release a trade paperback with all five planned issues later, but there is no official word about that yet. For now there will be no Marvel adaptation. IDW however are releasing their own comic book adaptation of The Rise of Skywalker, so the movie won’t be the only Star Wars movie without any comic book adaptation at all. But IDW sells a lot less comics than Marvel or DC and their release won’t be as high profile as a Marvel version.

1984 RETURN OF THE JEDI Rancor Keeper: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit Rancor Keeper. The Trilogo card art is different than the Kenner version, with the most notable difference of the light blue background. The figure’s name was also changed to Rancor Keeper (Gardien du Rancor Monster) for the Trilogo release. 1984 RETURN OF THE JEDI AT-ST Driver: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit AT-ST Driver. The Trilogo card art is one of the few figures from the Return Of The Jedi line with a completely different reference image. It features a scene from the Battle of Endor with an incomplete composite from second and different film-out. The “incomplete scene” was obscured by the figure’s placement in the bubble. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1984’s RETURN OF THE JEDI AT-ST Driver figure HERE.

You have to wonder what happens at Hasbro’s Product Development meeting. Do they pitch ideas based on what’s popular and sells? Or are they so far behind with playing catch-up for being ill-prepared with The Mandalorian, that everything is getting pushed to the backburner? Think about it.

Hasbro designs a multipack including a trio of Cantina aliens or Jabba’s aliens. Check. Classic vintage Kenner packaging. Check. The first run sells out in no time. Check. Hasbro solicits it once again due to its success. Check. Hasbro never produces another set like it again. Check. “We seem to be made to suffer. It’s our lot in life.” Check. (more….)

Is this Chirrut Îmwe from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or is it Otto The AutoPilot from Airplane!? We’re not certain. Chirrut Îmwe should have been a slam dunk/hit-it-out-of the-park perfect action figure, but we think it lacks in some important ways. (more….)

Weekend Fun: Star Wars Micro Machines, But REALLY Micro!

Hasbro’s Star Wars HasLab is all about offering huge vehicles. However, French company Microlight3D shows that you can also go in the opposite direction and make things tiny. REALLY tiny. Their 3D printing technology uses green laser light which allows for a higher resolution, i.e. you can print smaller objects. Microlight3D printed a Millennium Falcon that is just 100 µm long (1 µm = 1/1,000 mm = 1/1,000,000 meter. That’s 0.003937 inches, but just learn metric already). That’s about the width of a human hair. Which makes this Millennium Falcon probably the smallest version ever. The scale is roughly 1:345,000. The first Death Star using that scale would have a diameter of 4.63 cm / 1.82 in. The Millennium Falcon is so tiny Microlight3D actually had to use a scanning electron microscope to take a good photo of the ship. Would you be interested in actual Star Wars Micro Machines? You could easily store an entire fleet in a thimble! Saves you a lot of space! Of course toy photographers may face a few challenges here! Check out the Microlight3D website for some more technical background info! 3D printing will only become more important in the future!

Hasbro acknowledged two issues with two upcoming The Vintage Collection figures, both of which we brought up here at JTA.

  • First, the upcoming Captain Rex has already shipped, and no changes are intended for this figure. However, Patrick assured us that this will be the last time this sculpt is used, and future releases of Rex will be updated.
  • Secondly, we brought up the card back design issue here at JTA, and Hasbro listened! Even though several thousand have already shipped with the ‘bad’ design, a running change will occur to the card back. You’re welcome!

Star Wars Toys Continue To Be In Demand

Funko and Hasbro both released their earnings reports for the 3rd quarter a short while ago. And things continue to look pretty good for Star Wars toys. After years of dwindling sales Star Wars toys are more in demand again. This trend started in 2019 and The Mandalorian turns out to be one of the key factors behind that new success. 1984 RETURN OF THE JEDI The Emperor: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit The Emperor. The Trilogo card art doesn’t differ from the Kenner version. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1984’s RETURN OF THE JEDI The Emperor figure HERE.

The Future Direction Of Star Wars HasLab

Now that the Razor Crest has turned out to be the most successful HasLab project yet, I think it’s time to think about the future. What I want to focus on is what kinds of projects Hasbro should do. Do you want more big vehicles and ships? Do you even have the space for more big vehicles and ships? So the real question is: would you eventually stop backing huge Star Wars HasLab vehicles, because you simply have no more space to put them anywhere or to display them properly? Just check out the photo below which shows a 1/18 scale AT-AT next to Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher as Luke and Leia. So let’s talk about whether or not more big vehicles is what you want or if more big vehicles may eventually result in collectors no longer willing to back a Star Wars HasLab because they have run out of space. Click through for the short discussion.

Review: Phase I Clone Trooper - TBS6 [P4] - AOTC02

The HasLab campaign for the Razor Crest ended five minutes ago and the final backer count is an astounding 28,257! That’s a new record and beats the Marvel Sentinel by more than 6,000 backers. The Razor Crest was off to a great start when it was fully funded after 26 hours. As expected things slowed down a lot after the first few days but it picked up steam again in the last week. Let’s celebrate an extremely successful Star Wars HasLab that exceeded everyone’s expectations! And let’s hope it sends all the right signals to Hasbro. Do you already have plans for your Razor Crest? How will you display it? And what is your wish for a potential third Star Wars Haslab in 2022 or so?

Hasbro not only announced the great looking Mandalorian cosplay helmet earlier today, but a Target exclusive Black Series Remnant Stormtrooper was revealed as well! Yes, it’s yet another exclusive, so please get ready to place your pre-orders on the Target website! The Remnant Stormtrooper is a straight repaint of the new Black Series Stormtrooper sculpt and follows in the footsteps of the Vintage Collection Remnant Stormtrooper.

Also, the upcoming Moff Gideon Black Series figure was kind of revealed as well, since the box art for the Remnant Stormtrooper already shows part of Gideon’s cape!

Will you get the figure? And you are looking forward to Moff Gideon joining the Black Series line-up after his Vintage Collection version was announced not too long ago?

The Star Wars HasLab Just Beat The Marvel HasLab

Collecting is not a competition, many people will love both the Star Wars and Marvel franchise, but it will probably still be very satisfying for most Star Wars collectors to learn that just now the Star Wars HasLab surpassed the Marvel HasLab. The Sentinel had an impressive number of 21,913 backers, but the Razor Crest just now crossed that mark.
Star Wars went through a difficult phase in 2018, after years of rapidly declining merchandise sales, but ever since then the numbers have increased again. Hasbro have been reporting growth for the brand ever since early 2019 and to see that the second Star Wars HasLab is now the most successful HasLab campaign yet is certainly a very good sign for the franchise and the brand. Let’s hope Hasbro will use that momentum to release many more Black Series and Vintage Collection figures and sets in the coming months. And hopefully, The Mandalorian will be a huge focus.
What does the fact that Star Wars just beat Marvel mean to you? Did you back both the Sentinel and the Razor Crest? Do you think Hasbro will take note and increase their Star Wars output in 2021? Click through for more.

With 3 1/2 days still to go the HasLab Razor Crest is now fast approaching 17,000 backers, which means the Jawa Elder will very soon be unlocked. Most likely within the hour (the count rose by another 12 backers in the past 5 minutes since I took the screenshot). So now the only question is if the Razor Crest will get more than 20,000 backers with roughly 83 hours left on the clock.

Are you surprised by the success of the campaign? And what is your overall opinion on the Razor Crest HasLab with its various unlocks? Is it all you hoped for? Or would you have wished for more?

No matter what you think, it is certainly good news for Star Wars collectors that the campaign (most likely) exceeded Hasbro’s expectations and may even come close to the Marvel campaign in regard to the total number of backers. Now the real question is if something that receives close to 20,000 backers really needs to be a crowdfunded item. Do you feel HasLab should be more niche and appeal strictly to hardcore collectors or are you ok with the fact that the Razor Crest can be considered a mainstream item from a current show that is extremely popular among collectors? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

UPDATE: the Jawa is unlocked, backer count is now at more than 17,500!

UPDATE 2: the Razor Crest has crossed the 19,000 backers mark with 54 hours still to go. At the current rate it is quite likely the Razor Crest will get more backers than the Marvel Sentinel!

1984 RETURN OF THE JEDI Wicket W. Warrick: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit Wicket W. Warrick. The Trilogo card art colors are quite different than the Kenner version. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1984’s RETURN OF THE JEDI Wicket W. Warrick figure HERE.

The HasLab Razor Crest Flight Stand Has Been Unlocked!

With 7 1/2 days still to go the Razor Crest has just reached more than 15,000 backers. Which means the flight stand has been successfully unlocked. There is zero reason to doubt that the Jawa will not be unlocked as well. The campaign will certainly add another couple thousand backers in the last week. The real question is if the Razor Crest will manage to get more backers than the Marvel Legends Sentinel. The Sentinel got 21,913 backers in total. Do you think Star Wars can beat Marvel? For that the Razor Crest would have to add another 7,000 backers in the last week. The bets are on!

More than 15,000 have now backed the Razor Crest
