1983 RETURN OF THE JEDI Nien Nunb: Trilogo Update

In 1984, new packaging for Star Wars figures was introduced for the European market. A cost containment initiative, the new packaging sported three languages of the Return Of The Jedi logo for a “one size fits all” approach. Although a “three-logo” design was created for The Power Of The Force line (as evidenced on some ‘boxed’ toys), it wasn’t carried over to the basic figure line’s card design. They continued to use the three Return Of The Jedi logos instead. Although the word “Trilogo” is found nowhere on the packaging, the term is universally adopted by all Star Wars collectors to describe this line of figures.

Today we revisit Nien Nunb. The Trilogo card art is much lighter and washed-out when compared to the Kenner version. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1983’s RETURN OF THE JEDI Nien Nunb figure HERE.

The Mandalorian is back! Season 2 is off to a very strong start and will provide plenty of topics to talk about! So click on the banner below or here to read my spoiler review of the season 2 opener “The Marshal”. If you saw the trailer then you know where episode 1 is set (Tatooine, which is no surprise at all after the various shots of the planet in the promos) but the trailer doesn’t tell you anything really and won’t prepare you at all for what is happening. So let’s talk about the season opener! But beware, this is spoiler territory!

Regal Robot announces the Gamorrean Fighter Concept Maquette as a part of Mando Monday. Pre-orders open later today.

Months ago, the first teaser we got of Season 2 of The Mandalorian was an image shared on John Favreau’s Instagram of a gladiatorial-styled Gamorrean.

Now, Regal Robot is offering a replica of that Gamorrean Fighter™ Concept Maquette, developed with direct lineage to that very sculpt shown on the producer’s social media. A full gallery of photos just went live and orders start today at 1pm PT (4pm EST).

The highly authentic maquettes are over 12” tall, cast in resin and fully made and hand painted in the USA. Only 250 pieces will be made and each will come with a hand numbered, elegant metal plaque.

The Vintage Collection Becomes The Carbonized Collection

We have a sneak peek for you tonight of the Walmart exclusive The Vintage Collection The Mandalorian Carbonized figures. Why do “carbonized” figures look better than their non-carbonized counterparts? We’re finding that these figures are more impressive than the standard releases. These figures come without any VC numbers, and their packaging is “foiled” to create a hologram effect for the card art. The cards are extra-thick too, so it will be difficult to “hurt” the figures’ packaging. This is the first time we’re seeing the Imperial Death Trooper under The Mandalorian banner. Hasbro used new card art for this one. We have full galleries and collector notes available for all of the figures, and reviews begin tomorrow! Enjoy!

Review: Jedi Order - Celebrate The Saga

1983 RETURN OF THE JEDI Weequay: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit Weequay. For the Trilogo card art, not many changes exist from the Kenner release See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1983’s RETURN OF THE JEDI Weequay figure HERE.

Toy Photography Is Changing The Business

Today I want to talk about something that, in my opinion, has changed action figure collecting quite substantially in the past few years: toy photography. For the longest time action figure and toy collecting meant that you probably had various figures and vehicles on display in your home – but that outside of family members and friends almost no one got to see your collection. But in recent years more and more collectors have taken on toy photography as yet another hobby and have begun to share their work online. And this ongoing trend has not gone unnoticed by the various toy companies. And I think it has even changed the product lineup to a certain degree, to a point where modern figures, vehicles and playsets maybe even have the toy photographer a lot more in mind than the traditional collector. And it’s not just the Black Series, the Vintage Collection as well, ever since the line was relaunched in 2018!  So let’s talk about toy photography and how it has changed the business!

Yesterday, after expressing personal joy and elation for the announced all-new Return Of The Jedi Boba Fett, I posted an article suggesting Hasbro relook at the packaging to make it more authentic to the original Kenner card back. A few readers took the article, which focused on encouraging Hasbro to make the artwork better, out of context, and interpreted it as complaining. So, in return, they complained about “perceived” complaining. If they read the article, they’d see the relevance of it. Thankfully, someone did. JTA reader and friend Binary_Son, famous for creating our “Back The Barge” campaign posters, whipped up how he sees the Return Of The Jedi Boba Fett card art in minutes. And it’s already worlds better than Hasbro’s version shown yesterday. You can see how important it is NOT to zoom in on Boba Fett and correct the “pill” and “Backer” colors. And let’s not forget about the unobstructed sawed-off blaster rifle or the darker blue sky. All of these elements are crucial. In his rough example, the lower body would still need some work, but hopefully, you’ll catch the drift of what Hasbro should be giving us. Thanks, Binary_Son!

Galaxy's Edge Millennium Falcon Arriving In Europe

JTA regular Darth Rizzen found the Target exclusive Galaxy’s Edge Millennium Falcon in the new toy catalogue of French toy store PicWic toys. No other TVC products are in the catalogue, but the Millennium Falcon can be yours in France if you are willing to part with 450 euros, which is about $530 at current exchange rates.
Here in Germany you can find the vehicle at the usual etailers. One etailer here wants “only” 440 euros ($517) but pre-orders are already all sold out, another one wants a whopping 500 euros ($588). Is the Millennium Falcon available in your country too? And how much would you be willing to pay for it?

1983 RETURN OF THE JEDI Rebel Commando: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit Rebel Commando. For the Trilogo art, they dramatically recolored the character, seemingly to match the action figure inside of the bubble. The color scheme is notably different than the Kenner version. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1983’s RETURN OF THE JEDI Rebel Commando figure HERE.

Review: Hondo Ohnaka - TVC - VC173

The best way to assess The Vintage Collection Hondo Ohnaka figure is to say it should have stayed a pack-in exclusive with the Millennium Falcon (Smuggler’s Run) vehicle. We hope Hasbro doesn’t waste any other slots on Disney Star Wars figures, unless they’re from Episode IX or The Mandalorian. (more….)

  • Patrick quote: “Carbonite blocks would be an interesting item for the future”
  • At least 1 more unlock is forthcoming and will be announced next week (carbonite blocks?)

Most of the video concentrated on showing off the in-hand gray model prototype. You can see the entire video here. No other new announcements were made.

How can anyone possibly “celebrate the saga” with a set based on The Last Jedi? Also, Hasbro hates Rose. Now this is a very weird find. A photo of a super articulated Return of the Jedi Boba Fett action figure made by Diamond Select Toys has appeared online. The figure was found at a Disney Park / Hotel. It is not a fake as far as I can tell. Something from 2015 is rearing its ugly head five years later. During the Rebels line, Hasbro released commemorative four-packs based on the Star Wars films. Today I found The Empire Strikes Back sent at my local TARGET, and a few days ago, JTA reader Jon M. found the same. Nothing is arriving to stores, so maybe TARGET is clearing out its warehouse to have some Hasbro Star Wars stock?

Is Hasbro simply denying that Fives is getting repacked in the mainline? Their “ultimate checklist” is not as ultimate as they think. It lists the other figures from the wave (Hondo, Chirrut, Jedi Luke), but Fives is still conspicuously missing! We just reviewed this figure, and it’s one of Hasbro’s best. I have 4 of them in hand from Amazon, and another arriving today! Hasbro, where’s Fives?!

So much for the parameters in place to prevent bots from ordering. The Cad Bane with Todo 360 sold out in minutes before most people even logged onto the site. I hope more are on the horizon. Hasbro, produce enough of these things so it no longer benefits the aftermarket. Collecting has always had scalpers, but never like this.

Target is getting ready for the first Mando Monday. Among the first items you will be able to pre-order are a Baby Yoda aka The Child Lego set and a Funko Pop of the Mandalorian with Baby Yoda. But there will be several Mando Mondays and something Mandalorian related will certainly be revealed for the two Hasbro action figure lines. Will you be looking forward to Mando Mondays or are you already dreading the bots, scalpers and assorted other scum and villainy snatching all the products from under your nose so they can sell them on ebay?
