Paul Benvie, JTA Regular, Taken From Us Too Soon

It is with deep sadness that I relay to you that a longtime JTA reader has passed away unexpectedly. You may recognize him as “PaulB” in the comments. Paul Benvie was a JTA moderator for years, and his quirky personality was a source of entertainment for many readers. He was well-versed in the 3.75″ action figure line, and he loved to customize new creations as often as possible. He loved showing everyone his collection and posted a ton of pictures in our RDRs. Paul will be missed. If you’re able to help, there is a Go Fund Me campaign to help his family pay for funeral expenses. If you can do anything, please do. Thank you, Paul, for the input you added into Jedi Temple Archives.

1980 THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Yoda: Trilogo Update

In 1984, new packaging for Star Wars figures was introduced for the European market. A cost containment initiative, the new packaging sported three languages of the Return Of The Jedi logo for a “one size fits all” approach. Although a “three-logo” design was created for The Power Of The Force line (as evidenced on some ‘boxed’ toys), it wasn’t carried over to the basic figure line’s card design. They continued to use the three Return Of The Jedi logos instead. Although the word “Trilogo” is found nowhere on the packaging, the term is universally adopted by all Star Wars collectors to describe this line of figures.

Today we revisit Yoda. Yoda’s Trilogo card art features an alternate right-facing image used for the running change American Return Of The Jedi version of the figure. The name of the character was also changed to Yoda, The Jedi Master. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting the 1980’s THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Yoda figure HERE.

Review: Chewbacca - Mission Fleet

The Chewbacca Mission Fleet figure is the best of the first wave. It has a strong The Clone Wars vibe to it, but it will also work for an animated take on the Original Trilogy character. And it comes with a Wookiee flyer! Will you give this line a chance too? (more….)

Review: Boba Fett - Mission Fleet

Hasbro thinks they outsmarted kids when it comes to the Mission Fleet line, but what they didn’t expect was for adult collectors to fall in love with them instead. This line is amazing. And you’re going to love it too. The Boba Fett release is outstanding. But please remember, this is for 40 and 50-year-olds, not kids. (more….)

Toy Run Tuesday #56 - Clone Commander Tutorial

Hello once again, toy runners! It’s been a fantastic week in Star Wars. I got the newest wave of The Vintage Collection figures, and they are real winners! When we posted our review of Clone Commander Wolffe, I shared a photo of Thorn and Rex that I customized with a VC45 clone body instead of the swivel hip body Hasbro used for the commanders. I did the same thing with Wolffe last night, and by popular request, you’ll find a small tutorial on doing it yourself if you click here.

Why Does Hasbro Hate Star Wars Culture?

It’s evident that Hasbro hates the fine arts. Do you believe it has been more than 13 years since they released any of the musicians from the Original Trilogy in the 3.75″ basic figure line? And the last releases in 2007 were the same old sculpts from the 90s. What gives, Hasbro? Let’s get both bands updated in The Vintage Collection stat!

Hasbro, you know that The Vintage Collection packaging is a HUGE part of the collecting experience. And it appears there is a STRONG possibility that the TVC Smuggler’s Run Millennium Falcon will ship WITHOUT an outer box to protect the original packaging. From the explanation on their website to confirmations made by Guest Relations at the 1-800 number, it seems collectors won’t be getting their investment protected. If the interpretation of this is incorrect, we’ll happily issue a correction, but please confirm either way. We understand they’re going to slap a shipping label right on the front of the actual TVC box. If required, can you please work with your great retail partner and advise them against this practice? Can you work with them so they can offer collectors something that will protect the packaging/box of this treasured item? Let’s prevent disaster and an angry collecting community. Thank you! Also, thank you for getting more units up for pre-order today. That was the right thing to do. But so is ensuring these large vehicles ship with protection too.

And it’s getting worse. As if the debacle of TARGET’s Galaxy’s Edge exclusives wasn’t enough, JTA reader blueharvestcollector tagged us on Instagram, showing what the few who secured the TVC Millennium Falcon are doing with their pre-orders. It’s salt in the wound. Now, the irritation doesn’t come from an anti-capitalist attitude. Scalpers can do what they want, but only after the demand is met. This item lasted a mere moments online. Hasbro, you have to meet the demand for these exclusives better. All we hear is how you can’t price anything out. Then you finally release what collectors have begged for years to have another opportunity to purchase, and you make it limited. Why do you make these exclusives IMPOSSIBLE to secure? You need to work with TARGET ASAP and get more units available for pre-order. You’ve essentially ticked off most of your customers who wanted this, the TVC community that still remains. This is not how a relationship works. If there are more coming, then please let us know immediately. Because right now, people are walking away angry.

Review: Power Droid - TVC - VC167

It only took 41 years! But Hasbro finally got it right! The Lars’ homestead EG-6 Power Droid is finally released and part of the wonderful The Vintage Collection. An original Kenner 20-Back, Hasbro maintained its original name and card art. It’s also the final 1979 figure to be designed/released. The bottom line is that It’s BEAUTIFUL. In retrospect, the Power Droid was so simple to produce. You have to wonder what took them so long to make it. (more….)

Did you blink and miss the TARGET pre-orders this morning? You’re not alone. Complain about Walmart all you want, but at least new products last longer than 90 seconds to place a pre-order. Yes, they have room for improvement too. 1980 THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK IG-88: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit IG-88 (Bounty Hunter). IG-88’s Trilogo card art is quite a departure from the American Kenner packaging. The Executor background is completely eliminated, and in its place is an all-gray backdrop. Also, they dropped “Bounty Hunter” from the character’s name. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting the 1980’s STAR WARS IG-88 (Bounty Hunter) figure HERE.

You have your grains of salt at the ready? The usually well informed Latino Review website (unlike some other websites that simply make up stories) broke a brand new rumor today. And it’s a big one. According to the LRM website Anakin Skywalker will be a regular (!) character on the Kenobi show and of course he will be portrayed by none other than Hayden Christensen. LRM’s report also says Anakin was first supposed to make a cameo appearance, but then apparently Lucasfilm realized that people now like the prequels and the cameo role was turned into a regular character on the show. LRM claims the announcement was supposed to happen at Celebration, but since the event was canceled they say the announcement will happen at a later time, closer to the actual filming of the show.

So, what do you think? Do you want to see Anakin in Kenobi? Quite frankly, it never made any sense at all that we never saw his Force ghost in the sequels. Maybe Kenobi can make up for it. They only need to come up with a good reason for him to join in the fun. Perhaps we will be treated to Clone Wars flashbacks or maybe Hayden will portray Darth Vader, but Lucasfilm would probably not hire Christensen to portray a masked character that almost never reveals his face.

Hayden Christensen

Today we revisit Bossk (Bounty Hunter). Bossk (Bounty Hunter)’s Trilogo card art doesn’t vary all that much from the 1980 Kenner release. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1980’s STAR WARS Bossk (Bounty Hunter) figure HERE.

It’s a miracle Hasbro made another vehicle in The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ line, but the only reason this one exists is that it’s a Fan Channel exclusive. They’ll probably never again offer another vehicle at Big Box retail again. That aside, we know 6″ collectors will love the Snowspeeder/Dak Ralter set, but 3.75″ collectors will know immediately that Hasbro went cheap on its design. (more….)

Esquire is running a story about Alden Ehrenreich andf talked to him about a lot of things, among them of course his stint as Han Solo in Star Wars and whether or not there may be a future for Han Solo. While it’s not really likely, Ehrenreich still gives fans of “Solo” some sliver of hope that there will be a future for the characters. Click through for more info!

Did you forget about the Sequel Trilogy too? Don’t worry. Retail hasn’t. JTA reader from New Zealand, Andy M., sends us a few images highlighting the disastrous sales of The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon. (It must have performed as well as The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter!) Whether discount outlets like ROSS and TJ MAXX, or various chains internationally, one thing is certain: you can find all the ST merchandise you want. In all seriousness, I wonder how the 3.75″ scaled line would have fared if it were designed for collectors instead of kids (like all the products made from 2005 to 2014 were). I’d imagine collectors would have purchased a lot more than they did. Developing the Star Wars toy line fro a kids’ perspective was a huge misstep in retrospect.

Disneyland Hong Kong Is Closing Again

While Hong Kong is far away it may be of interest that Disney will have to close their Disneyland in Hong Kong once again. It had only re-opened about a month ago, but a surge of new Covid-19 cases in the city, 52 on Sunday, to be precise, resulted in renewed social distancing measures ordered by the local government. Disney will have to close the theme park on July 15th. Meanwhile, re-opening plans for Disneyland in Anaheim, which was meant to re-open in July (just like Disney World in Florida) were postponed indefinitely, actually, California announced a new lockdown on Monday. That leaves Disney World in Orlando for those mouse enthusiasts who like to live dangerously.
Disney depends a lot on revenue from their theme park division, it was 26 billion USD in 2019, which is almost 44% of total revenue. And without any meaningful revenue from movies or cruises, Disney doesn’t have too many sources of revenue left, licensing, merchandise, TV networks, and Disney+, although the streaming service won’t generate any profits for years to come.
It may actually be a long time before theme parks open again across the world or can operate at full capacity, which makes revenue based on merchandising and licensing all the more important, even though it’s only a modest source of revenue usually for Disney. Disney will release their numbers for the quarter in early August. Analysts believe net loss for the quarter may be about $1.4 billion USD. That’s a lot of Star Wars figures Hasbro would need to sell extra to make up for the missing theme park profits…

The Clone Wars may be over, but there is still more to tell and show us about the characters we met on the show. Disney+ ordered a new animated series from Lucasfilm: “Star Wars: The Bad Batch”!
We were first introduced to the Bad Batch in season seven of The Clone Wars. The new series will follow the team of elite Clones, as they find their way in a changing galaxy in the aftermath of the Clone Wars. In this early Imperial era the Bad Batch will take on mercenary missions as they seek for a new purpose. The new series is supposed to be released sometime in 2021 on Disney+. No specific release date has been given yet.

This is all the info we have at the moment. So we get a sequel, sort of, to The Clone Wars, just like Rebels, only set before Rebels. It may be of note that the Bad Batch team was one of the last things George Lucas actually co-developed, the team was his idea originally. I wonder, given the 1980s action movie tropes the Bad Batch stand for (which was the intention of George Lucas), if the new show will be anything like the A-Team.

So what do you think? Are you excited? Also, how much do you wager that Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex will eventually make an appearance?

There are some pink elements on the Trilogo version that aren’t present on the American version, but nothing out of the ordinary. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. 1980 THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK FX-7: Trilogo Update

Today we revisit FX-7. FX-7 ’s Trilogo card art features a horizontally-flipped image of the character against a revised starfield gradient background. The character’s name also changed, as Kenner and related companies dropped the “Medical Droid” subtitle. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1980’s STAR WARS FX-7 figure HERE.

Today we revisit Princess Leia Organa (Bespin Gown). Princess Leia Organa (Bespin Gown)’s Trilogo card art features the same image from the first version of the original Kenner card art, but this time the background was changed to a gradient orange and white, perhaps to give a contrasting background to Leia’s milky skin. The character’s name also changed, as Kenner and related companies attempted to standardize the way they described Star Wars characters. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting the 1980’s STAR WARS Leia Organa (Bespin Gown) figure HERE.

J.W. Rinzler is an author of various “The Making of…” Star Wars books and former Executive Editor for Lucasfilm. He was with the company for 15 years and had begun work on his “The Making of The Force Awakens” book when things fell apart. Perhaps you remember Rinzler’s blog and the story revolving around his canceled “The Making of The Force Awakens” book. Eventually Rinzler’s blog, where he wanted to go into more detail, was deleted and Rinzler had to sign an NDA with Disney that basically forbids him from talking about many things Star Wars fans are really interested in.
But yesterday the ForceCast podcast, the official podcast of Theforce.net, had J.W. Rinzler as a guest and while he still cannot really divulge concrete details, he did talk a bit about the transition when Disney took over Lucasfilm. And what may be of interest to toy collectors, he also talks about what changed for licensees, like Hasbro. Click through for more details!

Regal Robot CZ-3 1:1 Prop Replica Busts Update

Regal Robot reached out with an update on their latest release, the 1:1 CZ-3 Replica Bust.

This weekend the full product pages for both editions of our life-sized CZ-3 replica bust have gone live with full galleries of photos and details.

This bust was made with a scan from the original prop costume and will be available for purchase on 7/13/20 at noon EST.

We also posted a QnA that I did with legendary sculptor Brian Muir, who sculpted CZ-3’s head for the films and signed the plaques for our signature edition bust. Brian’s work on countless films, creating sculptures large and small, is an inspiration to fans, creators and makers everywhere. In addition to CZ-3, Muir had a literal hand in the realization of iconic and enduring characters such as Darth Vader™,  RA-7™ (aka Death Star Droid™), the armor worn by the Imperial Stormtroopers™ and even played a part in developing C-3PO™.  I hope you enjoy our chat as much as I did!

A short while ago it was announced that Disney would bring the 4K version of The Empire Strikes Back, which is available on Disney+ and Blu-Ray, to cinemas in the UK and elsewhere. However, now Variety reports that apparently talks with exhibitors broke down and the 4K version will not be shown in theaters after all. Instead a standard 2K version will be screened. No reason was given why the talks broke down or why exactly the 4K version will not be shown.
The next question is if all that many people would actually be eager to watch an old movie they have seen countless times before in a theater with other moviegoers. Cinemas across the world are waiting for the first new big release in months: Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, scheduled for an August 12th release date. Unless the movie gets delayed for a third time. Anyway, for Star Wars Fans it means that you can only watch the 4K version of The Empire Strikes back in the comfort of your home.
But do you think about going to the movies again at all? Or ist that not an option for you at the moment?
