The all new “High Republic” book series was meant to launch this year, but Charles Soule’s flagship title “Light of the Jedi” has been delayed until January 2021 because of the current pandemic. But to whet the appetites of fans IGN released the first chapter of Soule’s “Light of the Jedi” and it has also been revealed what kickstarts the events of the new series. To make it short: the destruction of a spaceship in hyperspace results in a galactic catastrophe. For unknown reasons (and it’s very likely those reasons are not just random bad luck) a spaceship with migrants onboard encounters an object on collision course in hyperspace. And while the captain of the ship manages to avoid a direct collision, the stress of the emergency maneuver is too much for the ship and it breaks apart.
This results in a galaxy wide catastrophe, because debris from the ship is now hurtling through hyperspace, dropping out of hyperspace all across the galaxy at random, flying at extremely high speeds and destroying everything in its path.
So the Jedi are called in to save the galaxy. From hyperspace debris?
Charles Soule did say that this is just the beginning of much grander events. The object in hyperspace on collision course was certainly not just some random space junk and it may very well be that someone or something wants to make hyperspace travel impossible or very dangerous.
But still, to me, the premise of the first novel, Jedi have to save the galaxy from super-accelerated space debris, does not sound too exciting. So the enemy is … space junk? I suppose the book will quickly move beyond that and that the Jedi will also try to find out what exactly happened and why it happened and that the real threat will emerge eventually.
What do you think about all that? Will you check out the all new “High Republic” event and read some books and comics once they hit shelves early next year?
