Topic: Q&A of the Day

Welcome to our next Q and A of the Day post! This column will be published daily, weekly, monthly, or just based on how many questions I get emailed – but no more than one a day. Feel free to send in your questions and I will put them in the queue. Click through for Q and A of the Day: Day 25.

Q: Do you have any predictions for the Episode 7 line? Commtech Chips? 5 POA? Saber throw arm action? Build-a-Droid? I believe Hasbro will almost certainly want to include some sort of extra playability or feature to the line, and I am interested in how they might approach it in 2015. Perhaps they could implement some sort of app to compliment the figures? I'm thinking something similar to the Angry Birds Telepods line. I would love to hear what you might think the Episode 7 line could look like. That is, if there is still a 3.75 inch line by 2015... (Matt S.)

A: I personally don't have any "predictions" for the Episode 7 line and quite honestly neither does Hasbro. Over the last couple of years I have been talking with them at Toy Fair and various convention activities. I can tell you that they're eliciting feedback from collectors on what we want to see in the future and appear to be taking copious notes. Whether or not this information they cull from us will be used for future planning is unknown, but with all of the scaling back in the line, it ironically appears they're looking for new and innovative ways to revive the line. Hasbro wants to bring things like Evolutions and Comic Packs back. In fact, and they'll deny this, they have a whole wave of Comic Packs sets ready to go (that have been in hibernation for years). Many have eventually been released in one form or another, but they have tooling done for a whole bunch more.

If you're asking for my personal opinion, I think it's quite possible that the Episode 7 line could come with only five points of articulation. Hasbro is dedicating the 6" line for super-articulation, all other scales will likely suffer the minimal articulation fate. It seems all else will be heading towards the dreaded 5POA format. I could be wrong. I could be very wrong. I hope I am wrong. But it feels like Hasbro's culture is moving this way.

I would LOVE to see the official mainstream return of Droid Factory. Aside from The Vintage Collection, this pack-in premium is the greatest thing since sliced bread for me. I buy them all, so this format works wondrously for me. Those who don't collect them all can get frustrated by it, especially if hey want that dang Build A Droid figure that they can't get any other way. But for me, the format is strong and EVERYONE (kids and collectors) love it.

There's no denying that Hasbro will follow similar set-ups from previous years for a huge multimedia event like a new Star Wars film. We'll have a basic figure line, likely a supplemental basic figure line, a large vehicle, a mid-size assortment and plenty of exclusives. We may even see more 12" shampoo bottles. (I hope not.) Mor information will be coming, but it probably won't be until Toy Fair 2015. Honestly, I don't read the rumor reports about Episode 7. I want to be totally surprised when it comes out. Although, the toy line will indeed act as the biggest spoiler for the film of all. I hopw that answers some of your questions.
