Research Droids Reviews: September 25, 2013 – October 22, 2013

Shaak Ti (Jedi Master) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #10)
There were many Jedi that made first appearances in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of The Clones. One such example was Shaak Ti (Jedi Master). This female Togruta was as beautiful as she was powerful with the Force. She was so mighty inn fact that it has been rumored that she taught Obi-Wan Kenobi a few tricks of the trade.... (read the full review)

Saesee Tiin (Jedi Master) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #20)
Episode I showed us all how the Jedi Council set up shop, but Episode II showed us how they utilized their Jedi arts. Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones provided Star Wars fans with an exciting sensory-overloaded scene during the Battle Of Geonosis.... (read the full review)

Plo Koon (Arena Battle) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #12)
We suppose that not all of the Jedi in the Star Wars “Saga” line can mete expectations and that’s precisely how we feel about Plo Koon (Jedi Master). We sometimes use the word “bittersweet” to describe action figures that come very close to the point of impressing us, yet fail in one or two areas.... (read the full review)

Ki-Adi-Mundi (Jedi Master) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #44)
The Jedi Council is full of diverse Jedi Masters. From exotic alien species to humanoid characters, all with nobility etched into their faces, the Jedi from Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones were presented in a completely different way than how we saw them in Episode I.... (read the full review)

Mara Jade - TBS - Basic (#14)
What were they thinking? We have been asking ourselves that often with some of the latest Hasbro offerings, especially with specific examples in The Black Series. Something went terribly awry with The Black Series Mara Jade action figure.... (read the full review)

Pablo-Jill - TBS - Basic (#10)
The absolute greatest Hasbro Star Wars action of 2013 is and will remain The Black Series’ Pablo-Jill. We'll explain in-depth why that is true shortly. As soon as The Original Trilogy Collection wrapped up its original basic figure line in December of 2004, Hasbro needed to pad retailers with some “hold over” figures until the groundbreaking Revenge Of The Sith line would become available.... (read the full review)

Luminara Unduli - TBS - Basic (#11)
Oh man. How do you describe an action figure that looks spectacular but sadly doesn’t meet full expectations because of the approach? That pretty much sums up The Black Series Luminara Unduli who may just be one of the most gorgeously sculpted action figures of our time.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 - TBS - Basic (#09)
Is Hasbro cost-containing or just being lazy by re-releasing a clean repaint of an older figure to make it new again? As people who know the importance of Hasbro amortizing expenses of their sculpts to help contain the exuberant costs associated with making an action figure in this day and age, we still find it a little unsettling that they did the bare necessities for R2-D2…. and nothing else.... (read the full review)

41st Elite Corps Clone Trooper - TBS - Basic (#12)
Travesty, debacle, calamity, cataclysm, catastrophe, disaster, tragedy and a spoof of previous efforts are just some of the terms we would utilize to describe the new 41st Elite Corps Clone Trooper from The Black Series line. We’re mad and it’s a righteous anger.... (read the full review)

Stormtrooper - TBS - Basic (#13)
Hold out a new hope no longer as far as The Black Series Stormtrooper is concerned. The 41st Legion Clone Trooper was certainly a debacle more than the Stormtrooper, but it’s likely there was a breakdown in communication at the factory level for it.... (read the full review)

Nikto (Jedi Knight) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #21)
With all of the Jedi that were present during the Battle of Geonosis, Hasbro had a difficult time of picking the Jedi that could actually be seen clearly within the many frames of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of The Clones. If you think about it, the scenes within the Geonosis arena are a sort of Prequel Trilogy version of the cantina from Episode IV or Jabba’s Palace from Episode VI.... (read the full review)

WA-7 (Dexter’s Diner) - SW [S - P3] - Basic (’03 #28)
There are some action figures that Hasbro creates that deserve merit simply by the way they’ve been approached. Think of the many characters that have been added to Episode I and Episode II thanks to CGI. These characters do not exist in three-dimensional form, yet will eventually have to thanks to their inclusion in the Hasbro basic figure line.... (read the full review)

Mace Windu (Geonosian Rescue) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #28)
It’s clear from the earliest waves that the Star Wars “Saga” action figures that Hasbro has focused on sculpts more than articulation. That is a sacrifice that many collectors aren’t willing to make, and not all of the action figures released have been coldly received by them.... (read the full review)

McQuarrie Concept Stormtrooper [Fans’ Choice #4] - SW [S - P3] - Basic (’03 #34)
In late 2003, right in the middle of the Star Wars “Saga” line, the collecting community came to a halt. There was good reason for the sudden impasse. Attack Of The Clones merchandise showed no signs of slowing down, although many collectors grew a bit weary of how Hasbro was drifting away from characters from the Original Trilogy.... (read the full review)

Ewok Assault Catapult - TVC - Exclusive
The Vintage Collection basic figure line may have come to a halt, but that hasn’t prevented Hasbro from developing some wonderful The Vintage Collection retail exclusives to keep collectors interested in the line. Kmart has been a long-running winner as they’ve picked up some of the best exclusives that money can buy.... (read the full review)

SP-4 & JN-66 (Research Droids) - SW [S - P2] - Basic (’03 #05)
Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones didn’t fully resonate (or at least resonate well) with many Star Wars fans. Much of that had to do with the icy cold chemistry between Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, but on top of continued complicated political plot lines that began in Episode I, Attack Of The Clones also spent too much time leading up to The Clone Wars.... (read the full review)

Greedo - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#07)
The Black Series 6” action figure line is really starting to engage many more collectors than anticipated. With so many collectors adverse to tackling a new scale after almost 20 years in the modern Hasbro line, it appears that Hasbro is making them so interesting that it’s difficult to not have your curiosity piqued even you staunchly oppose them.... (read the full review)

Bail Organa (Alderaan Senator) - SW [S - P3] - Basic (’03 #33)
The latter part of the Star Wars “Saga” took quite a few steps away from the action feature oriented figures from the earlier waves of the line. Hasbro began looking more deeply into Attack of The Clones (for the most part) and chose some of the more obscure background characters as well as main characters that the kid population wouldn’t necessarily find that interesting.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker (Throne Room Duel) - SW [S - P3] - Basic (’03 #17)
Before you look for the nearest dull weapon to shut us up with, let us explain fully why we’re fond of theStar Wars “Saga” Luke Skywalker (Throne Room Duel) action figure. We absolutely loathe action features in our action figures. There is no doubt about that at all. But without coming across as hypocritical, there is something very screen accurate and striking about Luke Skywalker (Throne Room Duel).... (read the full review)

Emperor, The (Throne Room) - SW [S - P3] - Basic (’03 #30)
The Emperor (Throne Room) is coming here, to the Star Wars "Saga" line? Hasbro shall double their efforts to bring us a great one. Or will they? It could be said that the most deflating action figure of the Star Wars “Saga” line is The Emperor (Throne Room). It utterly falls flat on its face thanks to disproportionate features and useless high-end articulation.... (read the full review)

Imperial Scanning Crew (Special Action Figure Set) - TVC - Exclusive
It took Hasbro an unfathomable four years to the day to finally get out the running change variant of 2009’s LC Imperial Scanning Crew (BD32) figure. We can tell you that Hasbro has personally been sick to death of Jedi Temple Archives’ incessant questioning and hounding asking them when we would finally see this figure released.... (read the full review)

Death Star Scanning Crew (Special Action Figure Set) - TVC - Exclusive
The power of the Original Trilogy works wonders in so many ways. But when it comes to store exclusives, it seems to have an even stronger effect. Star Wars toys that are seemingly not that impressive look so much better thanks to their roots (and let’s not forget about their packaging either). How many collectors believed they would see a completed scanning crew in quasi-vintage-styled packaging?.... (read the full review)

Han Solo - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#08)
The Black Series 6” line is performing well at retail already and Hasbro has provided quick turnaround with the second wave of figures in this lineup. Admittedly, calling two different scales of figures the same is extremely confusing, but it is what it is and it really doesn’t take away from the quality of the products they’re creating for each.... (read the full review)

Princess Leia (Slave Outfit) - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#05)
Yikes! If one could come up with a reason for why Hasbro may want to delay adding scantily clad female body types into The Black Series 6” line, Princess Leia (Slave Outfit) may be the case and point. Baby got back! And we mean big time! OK, so that sounds a bit harsh and in actuality it is, because although she has a few issues, Princess Leia (Slave Outfit) isn’t as bad as we think people are making her out to be.... (read the full review)

Boba Fett - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#06)
It’s easy for collectors to get agitated when Hasbro repackages a figure so soon in any given toy line, but we believe most will overlook the “sin” of repackaging Boba Fett so early in the second wave of The Black Series 6” line. Originally available in the highly sought after 2013 TBS Boba Fett And Han Solo In Carbonite San Diego Comic Con exclusive set, Boba Fett now comes sans carbonite block but with everything else in place to become more widely available.... (read the full review)

Battle Of Geonosis: Jedi Knights [Version 1] - SW [DV/ROTS] - Exclusive
The TARGET exclusive Geonosis Arena Showdown sets have sadly been put to rest. If you know anything about the staff at Jedi Temple Archives, you know just how much we adore these two-packs. After two successful series under the Legacy Collection line look, Hasbro had decided to carry the sub-series along no more, and you better believe that we kept questioning them when they would return to a format that would continually get out the 200+ Jedi that were part of the Battle of Geonosis in Episode II.... (read the full review)

Battle Of Geonosis: Jedi Knights [Version 2] - SW [DV/ROTS] - Exclusive
It’s quite unbelievable just how many Jedi action figures we have already acquired in our collections that were part of the opening skirmish in the Battle of Geonosis. The great news is that Hasbro shows no signs of terminating the production of them for the 3.75" scale toy line. More and more will come to collectors much like the Toys R Us exclusive multipacks part of the 2013 Star Wars [Darth Vader/Revenge Of The Sith] line.... (read the full review)

Republic Gunship - TVC - Vehicles (Exclusive)
There are probably just as many things “wrong” with the beautiful The Vintage Collection Republic Gunship as there are “right” with it. We don’t mean to start off on a provocative or precarious note like this, but don’t you think that exclusives should be created with the hopes that the response from the collecting community would be an unwavering affirmation that they will be buying something because of how incredible and needed it is? That may not be the initial reception of The Vintage Collection Republic Gunship however.... (read the full review)
