Research Droids Reviews: March 13, 2013 – March 26, 2013

Clone Commander Cody - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW07)
One of the most impressive figure in the 2012 phase of The Clone Wars line was Clone Commander Cody (CW7). One of the few figures from The Clone Wars line to come with a full 14 points of articulation, Clone Commander Cody was proof that Hasbro could deliver amazing clone leaders while including play value for the much younger collectors.... Savage Opress - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW02)
We recently thumbed through some of the 2008/2009 TLC Comic Packs pack-in comic books. In it were adds for the 30 (77-07) Saga Legends Fans’ Choice figures. Not only does this ad prove how far delayed the Comic Packs line was, there was a tagline on it that made us remember happier times.... (read the full review)

Han Solo - OTC - Basic (OTC #35)
The Original Trilogy Collection sought out to reach three goals. It intended to release a selection of all-new figures, reissue key OT characters in older sculpts (some with all-new paint operations and others straight repacks), and rerelease recent figures from the previous Star Wars “Saga” line that whose retail lifespan was cut short with the sudden announcement of the Original Trilogy getting released on DVD for the very first time.... General Madine - OTC - Basic (OTC #36)
We find it unreal that it took one year short of a decade for Hasbro to produce the first modern version of General Madine. Then again, there are still figures hasn’t updated from the vintage Kenner line and there’s no sign that they’re coming anytime soon.... (read the full review)

Lando Calrissian - OTC - Basic (OTC #37)
Lando Calrissian (General Pilot) or more simply known as General Lando Calrissian has gone through quite an evolution in 3.75” action figure format. As originally one of the final 15 figures released in the 1985 The Power Of The Force line by Kenner, Hasbro relatively got out the first modern version of this character in The Power Of The Force “2” line.... R2-D2 - OTC - Basic (OTC #12)
Does Hasbro really need to qualify the source on any standard R2-D2 figure? Would it make more sense to choose “Star Wars” as the definitive source? Very few characters look identical throughout the course of the films. And with very few scene-specific exceptions, the same is true for R2-D2, the world’s most favorite astromech droid.... (read the full review)

Wicket - OTC - Basic (OTC #17)
Is it inflation or just Hasbro trying to make a quick buck by releasing Wicket from 1998’s POTF2 Ewoks: Wicket & Logray two-pack as a single figure for 2004’s The Original Trilogy Collection. Hasbro was at an unfair disadvantage in a number of ways by the time 2004 hit anyway.... (read the full review)

Republic Fighter Tank - SW [Y/AOTC] - Vehicles
There are some moves by Hasbro that we just don’t understand. Maybe it’s none of our business or just not in our best interest to know and understand them, but when we see a product like the 2013 Class II Republic Fighter Tank hit the shelves, we can’t help but wonder what they were thinking.... Battle Droid - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW09)
The last figure in the final The Clone Wars line ever is a fantastic upgrade to previous versions. Hasbro always has a knack for mastering the aesthetic structures and physiques of their Star Wars action figures, but they often forgo articulation in places that desperately need it.... Asajj Ventress - Life Size Busts
The popularity of Asajj Ventress goes back to 2003 where she was introduced in the original Clone Wars multimedia event (2003-2005) and perhaps most memorable in Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars micro-series. Her popularity didn’t seem to diminish beyond that as she made multiple appearances in the comics and other publications.... (read the full review)

Clone Trooper (501st Legion: Vader's Fist) - Life Size Busts
Sideshow Collectibles has released what may be their biggest, best and most impressive definitive high-end Star Wars collectibles ever with the Clone Trooper (501st Legion: Vader’s Fist) Life Size Bust. Even from the start, Sideshow Collectibles alluded that this piece was massive both in size and weight and we can confirm unequivocally that this is indeed the case.... (read the full review)

Emperor Palpatine (Executor Transmission) - OTC - Basic (Exclusive)
The Original Trilogy Collection was filled with so many eager moments. In multiple ways it regenerated interest in the Star Wars line. Think about it for a moment. How could Hasbro go wrong with it? Quasi-inspired vintage Kenner packaging for the basic figure line, “actual” vintage Kenner packaging for the premium quality and higher priced sub-line and then some of the greatest exclusives the line has ever seen including Boba Fett’s Slave I from TARGET and various multipacks at Toys R Us.... Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight) - Mini Busts
When things go wrong for a Gentle Giant Ltd. product, they really go south. Perhaps it isn’t fair to criticize the Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight) Mini Bust so openly in the start of a review, but we’re not sure what anyone who was responsible making this piece was thinking. It not only is a screen inaccurate interpretation of our favorite Jedi from Episode VI, it mixes too many things together which ultimately affect the authenticity of the piece.... (read the full review)

Obi-Wan Kenobi (A New Hope) - Mini Busts
here probably isn’t a more respected Jedi amongst Star Wars fans than Obi-Wan Kenobi, especially “old Ben” as he appeared in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Surprisingly, Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn’t immediately on Gentle Giant Ltd.’s radar for quite some time after their first pieces were made in 2002.... (read the full review)
