Research Droids Reviews: January 30, 2013 – February 12, 2013

Battle Droid - SW [TPM 3D] - Movie Heroes (MH04)
Hasbro wasn’t entirely forthright with collectors when they developed the Movie Heroes line. Collectors interpreted this new offering as a replacement for the army-building Saga Legends line which also threw some harder to find figures into the mix as well to give hardcore collectors another chance at acquiring them.... (read the full review)

Republic Commando - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. has been timely with their PGM exclusives for the last couple of years. But maybe there were justified reasons for all of the delays. They went above and beyond for PGMs, especially in 2012, to bring truly unique collectibles only to them and create them with extreme quality and low edition sizes.... (read the full review)

Wedge Antilles - OTC - Basic (Exclusive)
If you asked any longtime Star Wars collector which character has gotten the shaft in the 3.75” line, most would probably come up with Wedge Antilles as one of the top contenders. Although Hasbro has done their due diligence to bring him into the line on multiple occasions in different ways, Wedge didn’t receive the “basic carded” treatment he deserved until the second half of 2005.... Luke Skywalker - OTC - Basic (OTC #01)
When Kenner decided to re-launch the Star Wars basic figure line again in 1995, one of the first figures to make it to their parking lot list was Luke Skywalker in his Dagobah configuration. Sure, we received the classic Kenner Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues) figure, but we really wanted to see for the very first time Luke in this outfit after Yoda’s workout sans jacket and dirty and sweaty (and maybe even a backpack so he could stow Yoda on his back).... Yoda - OTC - Basic (OTC #02)
Even if a figure isn’t super-articulated, if it’s sculpted well it may be all you need to pacify you at the time. That may best apply to Yoda (OTC #02) from The Original Trilogy Collection. An all-new take of the demure Jedi Master, this is the closest that collectors can get to the Original Trilogy interpretation of this fan favorite character.... (read the full review)

Spirit Obi-Wan - OTC - Basic (OTC #03)
So, Hasbro develops an all-new sculpt of Obi-Wan Kenobi and just keep it for a “spirit” version of the character only? That’s exactly what they did. After overusing 2000’s POTJ Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Knight) figure, Hasbro finally gets to updating our beloved Jedi but he comes with one flaw: he’s translucent.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 - OTC - Basic (OTC #04)
Hasbro really put together a special quartet of all the characters that made an appearance in the Jedi training sequence on Dagobah in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. What’s more, Hasbro went the extra mile to make them all interactive with each other, some much more intensely interactive than others.... (read the full review)

Bib Fortuna - OTC - Basic (OTC #31)
Hasbro often has things sprung upon them that required them to play catch-up at a speed that just isn’t possible. Thankfully, Hasbro got everything on track with the relatively sudden announcement that the Original Trilogy of Star Wars was going to be released in their original and Special Edition versions for the very first time on DVD.... (read the full review)

Gamorrean Guard - OTC - Basic (OTC #30)
One character that will probably always remain a fan favorite from Return Of The Jedi is the Gamorrean Guard. This means that all collectible formats of these beasts will also be in high demand. The 1983 Kenner release is a classic and will probably never cease being a favorite Star Wars action figure for collectors.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker (Tatooine) [2010 PGM Exclusive] - Mini Busts
We have a bone to pick with the folks at Gentle Giant Ltd. Why is it when they go above and beyond to make unique and special products for Premier Guild Members that they don’t thoroughly explains things to either use it as a marketing tool to entice non-PGMs or make current PGMs even happier?.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader (McQuarrie Concept) - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. is a purveyor of quality high-end collectibles. That is a well known fact. Some pieces are better than others, but for the most part they bring unparalleled craftsmanship and art to the Star Wars collecting community. So you would expect that the next Comic Con exclusive Mini Bust would deliver equally powerful results as their track record has proven, right?.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker - OTC - Basic (OTC #05)
Did anyone else find it odd the ways in which Hasbro updated some of the basic figures in The Original Trilogy Collection? Some went through major overhauls while others received minor updates. Luke Skywalker (OTC #05) is an example of a figure that received such an update.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader - OTC - Basic (OTC #34)
Hasbro spoiled us rotten with the VOTC line. We’ve been spoiled so badly that this line has effectively set our expectations for what Hasbro releases into the basic figure line so high that it’s going to be hard for even them to continue to bring us all-new figures with these new and improved standards. This isn’t a bad thing in the least of course.... (read the full review)

Jawas - OTC - Basic (OTC #24)
With prices surging for figures, it's sometimes fun to remember the seesaw surrounding the $4.99 price point. Back in 1996, the Jawas debuted at a paltry $4.99 in The Power Of The Force collection, and after several price increases we got a hefty decrease in 2004 when this particular 2-pack hit stores....
