Research Droids Reviews: August 15, 2012 – August 28, 2012

Super Battle Droid (Training Droid) - SW [TPM 3D] - The Clone Wars (CW16)
You know the drill by now. Repacks and repaints are an inevitable part of collecting Hasbro Star Wars figures. It’s a way that Hasbro can save on tooling costs while still brining collectors new or “new enough” figures for your collection. Some are obviously going to be better than others, but if done right, many can nearly rival the original sculpts from the sculpts where these “newer” figures were based.... (read the full review)

Tion Medon - ROTS - Sneak Preview (2 of 4)
Sneak Preview Star Wars toys pretty much became an expectation by the time Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith was to be released in theaters. These teases were warmly embraced by the collecting community and it only made our passion grow stronger for what was to come.... (read the full review)

General Grievous - ROTS - Basic (III 36)
By default, many of the introductory Star Wars figures from the Revenge Of The Sith line are concept art figures. Many like the Clone Pilot (III 34), Clone Commander (III 33) and the AT-TE Tank Gunner (III 38) didn’t get past two-dimensional sketches, yet are forever immortalized in plastic and in our respective collections.... (read the full review)

Mace Windu - ROTS - Basic (III 10)
What is up with all of these terrible action features adulterating our action figures? Waiting a long time for a Mace Windu update, 2005’s ROTS Mace Windu (III 10) just isn’t going to be it, folks. Static legs, floppy arms and a bleak expression are only the beginnings of why this figure needs a complete restart.... (read the full review)

Yoda - ROTS - Basic (III 3)
Not all of the figures in Collection 1 of the Revenge Of The Sith line were terrible. When Hasbro was able to work in action features into the accessories instead of the figures themselves, the results were much more positive.... (read the full review)

Obi-Wan Kenobi - ROTS - Basic (III 27)
In a movie year, Hasbro is going to ensure that they make plenty of different versions of all the main characters. Obi-Wan Kenobi received a lot of attention. He showed up in the basic figure line no less than three separate times. He was released as the opening figure of the Revenge Of The Sith line: the III 1 figure, the super-articulated (and very awesome) III 55 figure and finally this figure.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 - ROTS - Basic (III 48)
If you have any doubts that Hasbro didn’t have complete access to all of the details in the plot for Revenge Of The Sith, look no further than the card back description to the electronic R2-D2 figure. Sadly, a very non-canon series of events are described, none of which happened as stated.... (read the full review)

Battle Droid - ROTS - Basic (III 17)
When it comes to Separatists, there can be no shortage of them in the basic figure line. By the time the Revenge Of The Sith line became available at retail, Hasbro already ensured that the core characters already had a place in the line..... (read the full review)

Super Battle Droid - ROTS - Basic (III 4)
The "R2-D2 versus Super Battle Droids" scene was quite unexpected in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith, wasn’t it? Did you ever expect to see R2-D2 getting picked up by a droid bully to only then defend himself by spraying grease on them and setting them ablaze with his booster rockets? (read the full review)

Destroyer Droid - ROTS - Basic (III 44)
One thing about writing Research Droids Reviews is that you always learn something new. Take for example the droideka. Did you know there are over a dozen varieties? And did you know that not all of the same ones appeared in the Prequel Trilogy? (read the full review)

Rising Malevolence (Plo Koon/Ahsoka) - TCW [SOTDS] - The Clone Wars DVD Set (1 of 3)
When it comes to companion products for The Clone Wars line, we have to admit that The Clone Wars DVD Sets are among the best thing Hasbro can release. But, in order for them to be the best that they can be, Hasbro needs to change the method of their approach.... (read the full review)

Shadow Of Malevolence (Anakin Skywalker/Matchstick) - TCW [SOTDS] - The Clone Wars DVD Set (2 of 3)
The Clone Wars DVD Set collection line is doomed for failure. Hasbro, instead of taking this opportunity to introduce simple repaints to make an exclusive feel like it has more exclusivity than it does, is just bringing us the same old stuff hoping that the packaging fools our eyes into thinking it’s more than meets the eye.... (read the full review)

Destroy Malevolence (Obi-Wan Kenobi/General Grievous) - TCW [SOTDS] - The Clone Wars DVD Set (3 of 3)
Most will probably be able to agree that the Malevolence story arc was one of the most exciting story arcs in The Clone Wars television show. Sadly, Hasbro’s three Walmart exclusive two-packs based on these three episodes just don’t deliver enough goods to collectors..... (read the full review)

ARC Trooper - TLC - Saga Legends (SL 19)
The clone trooper and any derivation of it is typically universally well-received by the collecting public. Even if you hear criticisms that range from the rainbow colors in the color flashes to the specific problems of the sculpts, it’s rare to find a collector who loves clones that doesn’t simply just love them all....
