Toy Fair 2010 - Rocket Firing Boba Fett Mailaway

Posted by Nick | February 16, 2010 at 03:30 PM ET

One of the most significant stories that has come out of Hasbro's Toy Fair presentation is no doubt the Rocket Firing Boba Fett mailaway. So what's it all about? Read on.

One of the most legendary action figures in the past 30 years is no doubt the fabled Rocket Firing Boba Fett. Kenner & Lucasfilm teamed up for a teaser action figure before the release of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK to make a mailaway figure for fans of the Kenner Star Wars action figure line. All one had to do was mail in a few proofs of purchase to Kenner's processing center and they would mail you a brand new Boba Fett figure with rocket firing action! Much to many a kid's consternation, when they got their Boba Fett's they were wondering why the rocket would not fire. And the reason was that the rocket firing action feature had to be eliminated for safety considerations.

Since that time stories have circulated about how someone knew of someone who got a rocket firing Boba Fett, but it became the stuff of Star Wars collecting urban legends. And over the years a number of genuine Kenner rocket firing Boba Fett figures have been identified. But they number less than 20 worldwide and appear to have been prototypes. These figures have fetched thousands of dollars on the secondary market. And that concludes our history lesson.

So what will Hasbro be offering collectors this fall? Your own, Kenner vintage style Rocket Firing Boba Fett! But there will be some obvious differences. What are they?

PACKAGING
The original Boba Fett mailaway was sent out in a plain white mailer box.
The box itself was really only large enough to hold the figure in a plastic baggie. The new version will also ship in a plain white mailer box. But in this case it will be on a Vintage style basic figure card that ships within a significantly larger white mailer box.

ACCESSORIES
This version of Boba Fett features the same accessories as the vintage Boba Fett.
It includes the same blaster that came with the Kenner Boba Fett figure. Also included is a non-firing rocketpack plug that is a reproduction of the vintage rocket. And a new accessory is a larger rocket that DOES fire from the rocketpack and also adheres to product safety standards.

Hasbro has not confirmed at this time what the date stamp on this figure will be. JTA will continue to follow this story as it develops. You can check out several images of Hasbro's version of the Rocket Firing Boba Fett in our Hasbro Press Images Gallery.

So how do you get a hold of this homage to this legendary figure? Promotional mailaway stickers will be on all VINTAGE COLLECTION basic figures when they're released this August. MOMC collectors don't worry, the stickers come off!

Mail in 5 promotional stickers from VINTAGE COLLECTION figures (shipping costs may apply) and Hasbro will send you your own Kenner style Rocket Firing Boba Fett.
