More Insight For Spring 2018's Return Of The Vintage Collection

Posted by Paul | May 14, 2017 at 02:07 PM ET

I have been holding a few "small" items of interest close to the vest with regards to The Vintage Collection. There is a LONG TIME to wait until Spring 2018, so it's best to leak out a few details here and there so we can continue having these great discussions a little at a time, right? Click through if you're interested.

At Star Wars Celebration Orlando I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with one of Hasbro's longest running sculptors and employees: Dave Vennemeyer. Dave is a warm and friendly guy and always an amazing conversationalist. He is loaded with Kenner trivia and that is always exciting to discuss with him. He was with another executive member of the Hasbro Team, Steve Bono, and we got talking about the excitement of Hasbro's announcement that The Vintage Collection was returning. They are VERY excited for what the line will bring next year.

Anyhow, I specifically asked about if vehicles would be coming back, would they arrive in the same quality as the ones from original The Vintage Collection run. In other words, would they be of the same quality as the action figures would be: collector-focused and not "dumbed down"? They told me generally speaking that they're still talking about this and haven't made any final decisions yet. They explained that in order to bring a price point that most buyers of Star Wars would find palatable, vehicles, if they did release them again, would be more like the more simplified vehicles we have seen previously (like the ones released during the horrid era of 2013-2017).

If you recall, Hasbro was quite upfront with Star Wars fan site media outlets. At Toy Fair this past year, I personally asked Hasbro specifically how much a BMF or a BAT-AT would cost today. Steve Evans thought about it briefly and then said "probably $400." That's a great deal of money. This of course isn't cost feasible for a general marketplace release. And it doesn't even seem remotely possible as an exclusive at this price. Who the heck would buy this without a markdown?

Who knows what will really happen however. It's no secret that Hasbro was vocal that super-articulated action figures were no longer feasible to produce for the mainstream marketplace, that the collector base has shrunken down to its lowest numbers yet, and that the cost would be too great for those left that it wouldn't be a good business decision. But we all now know how that panned out and that these arguments didn't really hold any water. For those that need to catch-up: The Vintage Collection 3.75" super-articulated basic figure line is coming back Spring 2018 in super-articulated status.

That being said, if you did want to see a return of vehicles for The Vintage Collection, what vehicles would you like to see again. What vehicles that haven't been done yet would you finally like. What vehicles are in a major need of a modern update (cough, cough.... Darth Vader's TIE Fighter.... cough, cough).

Anyway, you know who is watching, so leave your opinions and ideas in our comments.
