Pretty Awesome Cardboard Death Star Playset Found In France!

JTA reader Patrice from France has located a rather cool Palitoy Death Star-like Death Star cardboard playset. Although this is in Rebels packaging, this is the first time we're hearing about ti, as well as Patric. I'm a long time Star Wars collector from France and I've been following your website for some time now, due to your figures review which I always found honest, well written and informative.

I've also been reading the user comments and noticed that some people cynically predicted that Hasbro's next move for SW action figures would be 0 POA cardboard cutouts selling for the same price as SA figures.

Well, I just found something which may amuse and/or horrify you: a Death Star playset complete with 14 figures and 3 TIE fighters for 14.99 Euros.
The catch is that it's all made of cardboard. Including the figures which are indeed 0 POA cardboard cutouts.

This set is not from Hasbro though but from Stor S.L., a Spanish toy company.

It was a complete surprise to me. So far I've only found it at French toy store chain "Picwic".

I actually bought one in order to see if what it was worth.

It's a rather imposing set once completed, standing at 43cm high with a 46 cm radius. The inside is spartan. There is little decoration and no instruments or consoles to be had even in the specific superlaser room, and no moving parts. Some walls have Stormtrooper guards printed on them, some left handed, some right handed (mirror image, rather lazy on the part of the designer). The set is fragile, some sections got damaged during assembly despite my being careful, and some prints on the TIE fighter panels were badly scratched straight out of the box.

I'm not sure where the company is going with this.

I think the set is far too flimsy and fragile to survive one session of rough play, and the lack of action features might be a bit boring. Quieter kids with a lot of imagination (and parents that can't afford the expensive Lego Death Star set) just might enjoy the package as it is, I guess.
For a collector, the thing is a tad small for 3.75" figures despite its size. Still, it does have some potential to recreate scenes from Episode 4.
