Rethinking How To Count Articulation Points

Posted by Paul | August 06, 2014 at 08:22 AM ET

Jedi Temple Archives has recently adopted a new method of calculating articulation based on conversations we have had with peers. We don’t discount that it’s “thinking” outside of the box, but we try to strive for the most accurate of details, even if it's not "popular" or if it breaks "tradition". But one thing is for sure: it has created controversy. (more....)

Upon completing a very lengthy discussion about this topic, JTA had concluded that it would be in the best interest of all to be as specific as possible when counting these points. After all, when Sideshow Collectibles states that their Prometheus and/or Armored body bucks contain 30+ points of articulation, they’re essentially doing the same thing. Actually, they ARE doing the same thing. If an elbow is ball-jointed, this means it has two (2) points of articulation: the 360 degree swivel plug and the arbitrary range of motion (we’re unable to give exact number of degrees because it varies from figure to figure) of the back and forth point of articulation of the lateral point. This means that ball-jointed elbows have two (2) points of articulation (each). Now say a figure has swivel elbows. There is only one (1) point of articulation there because no matter how hard you try, that point of articulation only allows the lower arms to rotate 360 degrees against one plane.

Because we are sensitive to tradition, we will not be completely throwing out what has been established for so many years, albeit incorrectly. In our reviews, we will continue to list areas/places of articulation, AS WELL AS the correctly counted POINTS of articulation.

In the interest of accuracy, we would like to follow suit of what Sideshow Collectibles and other licensees have done. However, we have received some correspondence about this as people have commented on our new calculation of articulation points in our reviews and they're resistant to change. So we wanted to address this here. In the goal to be as correct as possible, we want to follow Sideshow Collectibles’ method of counting points of articulation because it really gives a much clearer picture of how an action figure was constructed. Please leave your thoughts in our comments below.
