Q and A of the Day: Day 21

Welcome to our next Q and A of the Day post! This column will be published daily, weekly, monthly, or just based on how many questions I get emailed – but no more than one a day. Feel free to send in your questions and I will put them in the queue. Click through for Q and A of the Day: Day 21.

Q: I am eagerly awaiting the imminent arrival of my Amazon exclusive Droid Factory set of Build-A-Droid figures. I have noticed that the TIE Pilot included in this set is called out on the card front as "Black Squadron" TIE Pilot. In addition, there is a burst indicating it is this character's "First Appearance!" as an action figure.

My question is, is this true? Have we never gotten a Black Squadron TIE Pilot before this one? What about Mauler Mithal (Black Two) in the TPM 3D TRU Yavin Pilot Pack? What about the TIE Pilot in the Walmart exclusive LC '09 Evolutions: Imperial Pilots Legacy (Series II) set? What about the TIE Pilot in the inaugural Target exclusive Vintage Special Action Figure Set 9-pk: Imperial Set? Any insight would be appreciated. (Nate)

A: It's definitely not the first appearance of this character. You're correct. The first time we ever received this character was in the 2009 Legacy Collection Imperial Pilot Legacy (Series II) Walmart exclusive, and as you have also mentioned, he was then re-released in the 2010 TVC Special Action Figure Set 9-pack TARGET exclusive. This character is officially designated as Black Three. Mauler Mithal however is not the same character as Black Three and doesn't have the "ace stripes" on his helmet either.

Hasbro maybe referred to this action figures as "First Appearance" because (A) there is some deco difference that we have yet to see or document or (B) this is the very first time he is appearing in the line as a basic figure (which as far as I am concerned is the weakest of the arguments). I believe it is just an oversight. Hasbro doesn't always have all of their facts straight due to the sheer size of the Star Wars universe. Remember how they didn't show 2004's SW R2-D2 (Jabba's Sail Barge) as the first issue of the 2010 TVC R2-D2 (VC25) figure? Things get missed and overlooked. There are plenty of other examples too which at the moment escape me.
