Research Droids Reviews: May 22, 2013 – June 4, 2013

Luke Skywalker - OTC - Basic (OTC #06)
Hasbro had to wrap the Star Wars “Saga” line up much more quickly than anticipated. They had to gear up for development of The Original Trilogy Collection to prepare for the commemoration of the Star Wars Original Trilogy getting released on DVD for the very first time.... (read the full review)

Princess Leia - OTC - Basic (OTC #33)
Is any basic figure collection complete without Princess Leia in her slave outfit? She may just be the quintessential character from the Original Trilogy. So what better Princess Leia Organa choice is there to release in The Original Trilogy Collection, a greatest hits collection, so to speak, of the most popular characters from the first three Star Wars films.... (read the full review)

Scout Trooper (Ewok Attack) - Maquettes
We’d imagine that there is no collector middle ground with the Gentle Giant Ltd. Maquettes line. It is probably a safe bet to say that you either love them or are indifferent about them. But as far as we’re concerned, we think they are about the greatest things since sliced bread.... (read the full review)

AT-AT (Imperial All Terrain Armored Transport) - TVC - Vehicles
Even the staunchest complainers of Hasbro have to concede that some of the things they do are brilliant for the toy line. After a rough 2012 and perhaps rougher 2013, Hasbro releases a derivation of the universally praised 2010 SW [SOTDS] Imperial AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) vehicle.... (read the full review)

Logray (Ewok Medicine Man) - Mini Busts
You know our position. It is our strong opinion that everyone should dabble in some form of high-end exclusives to supplement his Hasbro focused collection. Products created by licensees including Sideshow Collectibles and Gentle Giant Ltd. are made with authenticity and precision that just cannot be captured in 3.75” scale.... (read the full review)

Imperial Gunner - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. once again surprises the heck out of us that they have chosen a very popular member of the Imperial forces to be an exclusive instead of a general release Mini Bust. We have noticed throughout Gentle Giant’s more than decade long tenure making high quality Star Wars collectibles that they love to mirror many of their releases after what Hasbro does.... (read the full review)

Shae Vizla (The Old Republic) - Mini Busts
If you have any doubts to how the Star Wars collecting climate has significantly changed in 2012 as compared to years past, look no further than some of the recent releases in Gentle Giant Ltd.’s Mini Busts line. Original Trilogy character Mini Busts are lucky to see edition sizes run over 1000 pieces, yet a video game character like Shae Vizla, who made her first appearance in The Old Republic video game trailer mind you, gets an edition size of 2500.... (read the full review)

Anakin Skywalker And Sebulba - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. went as long as possible without bringing any characters from The Phantom Menace into their popular Mini Bust format. Of course the obligatory universally appreciated Darth Maul and/or Qui-Gon Jinn Mini Busts were offered early on, but fan favorite characters were taboo and they didn’t touch them with a ten-foot pole.... (read the full review)

Watto - Mini Busts
Even if you’re the biggest hater of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, we believe that if you search your soul that you would be able to admit that look of the characters were very impressive. This doesn’t mean you have to like the way that they talked or the way they behaved, but just the simple appearance of them should inspire some awe within you.... (read the full review)

General Veers - Mini Busts
It was a day that would not be forgotten any time soon when Gentle Giant Ltd. announced a terrible error with the general release General Veers Mini Bust. In fact, it could be interpreted as one of their biggest mistakes in their entire history. They explained in a note on their Facebook page that the concept for the regular edition General Veers Mini Bust changed in development.... (read the full review)

TIE Fighter Pilot - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. often sneakily squeezes in periodic variations to their Mini Busts line that are unbeknownst to the general public. This is sort of what happened to the TIE Fighter Pilot Mini Bust. An edition size of 4200 pieces was set for the TIE Fighter Pilot, but one-sixth of the one-sixth scale collectible was given a special paint job that set it apart from the remaining 3500 units.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker - OTC - Basic (OTC #26)
They may have not been all perfect, but one character Hasbro made interesting for both kids and collectors in the 3.75” with each successive release is Luke Skywalker from Episode V, wearing his “Bespin Fatigues”. Every time Hasbro tackled this particular version of Luke Skywalker from the ground up, they either achieved a great likeness, or they added some really cool features that were screen accurate.... (read the full review)

Scout Trooper - OTC - Basic (OTC #11)
One figure that created feverish collector army building was 2000’s POTJ Scout Trooper (Imperial Patrol) figure. In fact, the demand for this figure was so off of the charts that Hasbro reissued it less than a year later (in the same Power Of The Jedi collection mind you) with a clean paint job to help widen availability and satiate demand.... (read the full review)

Princess Leia - OTC - Basic (OTC #09)
There is no doubt that 1998’s POTF2 Princess Leia Organa (All New Likeness!) was overused as a basic figure. In fact, that would be an understatement. But if you consider all of the Princess Leia Organa figures Hasbro made throughout the years, this remained the most generic (read not scene specific) version of her to date....
