2010 SDCC: Hasbro Geonosis 2-Packs In-Depth Report

Posted by Nick | July 22, 2010 at 10:41 PM ET

More Geonosis Arena 2-packs? We pretty much guessed that, but in Legacy Collection (2010 edition) packaging? We've got the entire series digested in our full in-depth report!

GEONOSIS ARENA 2-PACKS

2009's Geonosis Arena 2-packs seem to have been a success, because Hasbro is going back to the well for a second installment to this line of Target Exclusive 2-packs. The new assortment is much like the first, with the majority of sets pitting Jedi against Seperatists. But there's one exception to that theme which Hasbro puts to good use this time around.

It's unclear if Hasbro is going to change the packaging on this second wave of Geonosis Arena 2-packs since the new sets are on display in TLC RED packaging. These may be mockups with the production sets appearing in the new SHADOW OF THE DARK SIDE packaging. They're set to hit retail in October of this year, and will retail for $12.99 each. But what about the figures? What's new here and what's been recycled?

SET 1 of 6 – Obi-Wan Kenobi & Super Battle Droid – This version of Obi-Wan appears to be a reissue of the TLC BLUE BD-44 Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the Super Battle Droid appears to be a repaint of the 30-08 Super Battle Droid which has been reissued a number of times.

SET 2 of 6 – Rodian Jedi & Battle Droid – Here's something interesting for fans of alien Jedi, with a subtle callback to the past. It's an unnamed Rodian Jedi Knight. Those of you who were collecting in 2003 may remember a similar Rodian Jedi from the Clone Wars Jedi Army 3-pack. But the great part here? This Rodian is well articulated! The Seperatist in this particular set is a Battle Droid in Geonosis colors. Will the eyes on this version of the Battle Droid be sized appropriately? We'll have to wait and see.

SET 3 of 6 – Shaak Ti & Geonosian Warrior – Shaak Ti in this set seems to be a retool of the ROTS III-21 Shaak Ti, with newly jointed arms and an updated paint job. And the Geonosian from this pack appears to be very similar to the Geonosian from last year's set which was packed with Kit Fisto. Both of these Geonosians are drawn from the sculpt for Sun Fac, who was released in 2006's TSC line. However, this Geonosian is armed with both a sonic blaster and a staff.

SET 4 of 6 – Anakin Skywalker & Droideka – This version of Anakin Skywalker seems to draw heavily on the Episode II Anakin from the Anakin Skywalker Evolutions 3-pack. But it seems possible that that there may be a new headsculpt at work here. The Droideka appears very much the same as the version from last year's Geonosis Arena 2-pack which was packed with Yoda.

SET 5 of 6 – Nicanas Tassu & Count Dooku – This set presents something new to the Geonosis Arena 2-packs. Nicanas Tassu is an all-new character, and was one of the Jedi who passed lightsabers to Anakin & Obi-Wan. Tassu is packed in with Count Dooku. This version of Dooku appears to be based on the Evolutions Dooku sculpt, but features a new head.

SET 6 of 6 – R2-D2 & C-3PO with Battle Droid Head – This is one of the few sets in the Geonosis arena 2-packs that does NOT feature a Jedi. In this case it's the droids that are showcased. R2-D2 has Geonosis deco and appears to have a pop out welding tool. C-3PO appears to be built on a newer protocol droid body, but also features the Battle Droid head. Also packed in is an Episode II C-3PO head so that collectors can decide for themselves which head they want on C-3PO's body.
