Is The Force Awakens Influencing Aftermarket Values Of Older Items?

Posted by Paul | December 13, 2015 at 08:36 PM ET

Is The Force Awakens affecting older products now out of production? It certainly appears so by Sideshow Collectibles' latest actions, but check out for example The Black Series [Phase I] Luke Skywalker (#11) figure - the Bespin Fatigues one. Once a pretty bad peg-warmer, his aftermarket value is climbing briskly. JTA reader Michael W. suggests that there may be a reason for this. What do you think? Click through for more!

Paul,

It wasn't that long ago that the cost of the Star Wars The Black Series 6-inch "Bespin Luke" figure on the secondary market was in the mid-to high- twenty dollar range.

But thanks to the rumored appearance of Luke's - aka Anakin Skywalker's - lightsaber in a climactic lightsaber duel at the end of Star Wars "The Force Awakens", the figure is now going for twice that on the secondary market.

The cheapest TBS6 Bespin Luke on Amazon is $49.49 plus $4.99 shipping. Sellers on eBay are asking close as much as $60 plus shipping (the cheapest is $35 shipped). Can it all be over a plastic lightsaber accessory that has been released multiple times?

Bespin Luke is certainly an iconic version of the Luke Skywalker character. But the TBS6 figure suffers from an average facial sculpt, poor paint applications and limited articulation.

Prices are soaring none the less.

What makes this especially head-scratching is that Hasbro is sure to include Luke's - aka Anakin's - famed lightsaber with some future release of Finn in The Black Series line. Collectors might have to wait a few months to have their six-inch Finn holding a screen accurate lightsaber, but it beats shelling out $40-$50 for an average action figure on the secondary market.
