NYCC Hasbro Preview Party: Hot Key Points And New Info Revealed

Posted by Paul | October 09, 2014 at 09:38 AM ET

Our Q&A will be coming to you as soon as humanly possible. We have over 25 questions answered and we have to say that for the first time in a long while we were pleased with the answers, even if they weren't answers we wanted to hear. Straightforward, upfront and humorous at times all describe our interaction with my new best friend and Hasbro rep Joe N. Until we get that Q&A posted, I wanted to share some important details about what was revealed with some details that you likely won't read anywhere else (or at least we hope this is true). The Hasbro Preview Party was honestly a breath of fresh air. Even I went in hanging my head that it would just be a refresh of SDCC reveals. To my unexpected surprise they were all-new reveals (save for a key bunch of main characters. Some of these points will be regurgitated in our Q&A, but time is of the essence and we want you to see it here. (more….)

I’d also like to say how nice it was to see my friends Arnie & Marjorie from SWAN, Chris Swanski Bret Diaz from BanthaSkull.com, Big Kev (always a pleasure), Jeff Smentek from JediDefender.com (I was looking for you before I left because we didn’t get to chat much…. sorry!) It was also nice to meet some fans of the site and other colleagues I never met face to face until last night (Maxwell Lux from Marvel and JabbaJohn from SirStevesGuide.com). Anyway, onto the news!

Hera and Sabine will not be coming individually carded (in any foreseeable future). Sabine’s helmet is not removable.

As you saw from our (hopefully) exclusive reveal, the Mission series R2-D2 comes with an opening front panel and an articulated utility arm. I was blown away by that personally. Yoda comes with Luke’s lamp as well, so you can totally recreate the one to one battle from Episode V.

The Black Series 6” Luke Stormtrooper has been specially tooled to be “a little short for a stormtrooper”. They shortened his torso a bit to make this a reality. This attention to detail was flabbergasting. In an era that appears that Hasbro is trying to save every penny possible, we appreciate this effort greatly.

The new 5POA figures have received a new approach. The detail has been upgraded. The paint operations have been made tighter. And we have to say that our interest in piqued very strongly at this point. Never willing to accept them as a substitute for the super-articulated collectors’ line, we bet that some of the more focused collectors won’t be able to help themselves with some of these figures. All new two-packs and single packs revealed were stellar.

The 5POA Luke X-wing has a removable helmet. (JTA should have an exclusive reveal of this on our Facebook page.) Joe N. wasn’t 100% certain, but he is pretty sure the Lando (Skiff Guard) originally came with a removable helmet, but then a change was made so it’s not removable any longer.

In general (with a bigger focus on the 5POA stuff), I asked Joe N. from Hasbro if he was aware of the nightmarish paint operations. And would you believe he said he has been made well aware from JTA via our reports and pictures and review comparison shots. He conceded that work needed to be done earlier on those figures, but they are on top of this. He assured me that we will all see significant improvement on Star Wars: Rebels figures (which I can confirm is true via the TRU exclusive multipack). I just found it yesterday.

Oh yeah. What about those Star Wars: Rebels figures? Would you believe Hasbro said that they have already been shipped. This makes me wonder if the Assortment Number hasn’t been changed. But multiple sites from across the country all confirmed to him that not one Saga Legends and/or Mission Series figure has been found. Hasbro will investigate this further. I honestly believe that something broke down in the communication.

There are NO fabled The Vintage Collection figures in Hasbro’s warehouse. From Hasbro’s perspective, all have been shipped out to the retail level. Don’t expect anything to surface, and if it does, it’s because the retailer had been sitting on them or the product was stuck in their warehouse.

The Jawas appeared “too large” to many media people. I disagree. They were posed next to the TVC C-3PO which is too short making their scale seem a bit off. But I held one in my hand. They’re absolutely 3.75” scale. And they’re gorgeous. No soft-goods (thank God) and the sculpts are dynamic. A little secret for JTA readers only: they each come with swivel hips! J

The Han Solo (with Carbonite block) is killer. Fantastic likeness, great proportions and he is fully articulated (ankles and all). He even comes with binders which just knock this figure out of the park. People have been whining about the carbonite block already, but I loved it. It was amazing.

Mosep is jaw-dropping. If the production figure can look 75% like the prototype, collectors will be walking on sunshine. I couldn’t fault the figure in the slightest.

Leia Boushh (OMG!) What a perfect figure. Absolutely perfect. I asked for a picture with the helmet on, but as Joe from Hasbro tried, she started falling apart (sorry Joe). The prototypes are very brittle. But again, I don’t think that Hasbro could have made her better. Her head sculpt is divine.

Commander Thorn was another wonderful figure. The paint operations were incredible and the head sculpt was nice too. I feel confident that we will see a rise in the improvement of paint operations, so if Hasbro follows through, collectors will be stunned with this figure.

The 6" Clone Commander Cody comes without a removable helmet, a detail we find particularly shocking as he was one of the few clones in the films to reveal his human likeness.

Around UK and NY Toy Fair this year, a Han Solo (Hoth Outfit) figure leaked out. That figure is indefinitely suspended (much to our chagrin). I begged Joe to get it out ASAP.

Oh, and that torturous long-awaited Captain Rex originally scheduled for the Legacy Collection [2] line? That too is on indefinite suspension. I expressed how many collectors are begging for that figure and Joe did say they would like to get him out one day. Part of the reason why his release has been stayed is because of the “Lost Missions” focus of clones. That’s why we’re getting that phase II Rex. It’s not meant to substitute the phase I version revealed all the way back in 2012.

More coming soon. Don't stray too far from JTA!
