Q and A of the Day: Day 62

Posted by Paul | May 15, 2014 at 02:28 PM ET

Welcome to our next Q and A of the Day post! This column will be published daily, weekly, monthly, or just based on how many questions I get emailed – but no more than one a day. Feel free to send in your questions and I will put them in the queue. Click through for Q and A of the Day: Day 62. Topic: Is that intentional damage?

Q: I wanted to share something with you that irritated me this evening. While I was at a West Omaha Target store a few hours ago, I noticed that they were stocked with 3 3/4" Black Series figures. The entire current wave was in stock. All figures were in very good shape. Except for one....😡 I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on this? Scalper deterrent so some kid can have a chance to obtain it? Or a [jerk] scalper did this on purpose to prevent other scalpers or collectors from getting a mint card at retail & having to pay $$$ to get it from him?? I've seen this many times in the past with Star Wars & other toy lines. What the heck? (rekal8)

A: I have seen this countless times in my local TARGET in Neshaminy, PA. You may not want to know the answer. I am NOT saying this is what is happening in your area, but I witnessed a TARGET employee do this same exact damage. He bent the card right in front of me. I exclaimed "What are you doing?" as angrily as I could without them feeling the need to call the police on me and then I immediately looked for a manager. The manager looked at me like I had six heads when I told him what I witnessed. I huffed and just walked away when I realized when I wasn't going to get anywhere with him. I continued to see this same damage for the next couple of years much to my complete aggravation. It has since dissipated dramatically, but I STILL see it periodically.

I am a conspiracy theorist, so it's my opinion that there is an agenda at TARGET to do this to prevent the true scalpers from buying these and trying to hock them on the aftermarket. But it really hurts the genuine collector that almost never sees this figures at retail in general. I can't tell you the last time the particular location I am talking about has received anything remotely new in their stores. It seems "karma" has a sense of humor (I don't believe in karma for the record). What goes around comes around as the old adage says. Their Star Wars department is a debacle, mostly thanks to Hasbro's terrible case assortments, but they literally have gotten nothing in for years. Years ago,TARGET Corporate instructed stores to punch holes in POTF2 figures. That died almost as soon as it began thanks to the outcry from collectors. (There were also a ton more collectors back then too.)

I would encouraged you to address it with the store manager, but I am not sure how much longer Big Box will be a good source for your Star Wars figure needs. It may be all moot.
