Q and A of the Day: Day 50

Posted by Paul | February 03, 2014 at 07:52 PM ET

Welcome to our next Q and A of the Day post! This column will be published daily, weekly, monthly, or just based on how many questions I get emailed – but no more than one a day. Feel free to send in your questions and I will put them in the queue. Click through for Q and A of the Day: Day 50. Topic: The imminent return of The Vintage Collection?

Q: Paul - After reading your latest Vintage Versus Modern Analysis over the weekend, it’s hard for me (and I'm sure for others) to accept that Hasbro’s TVC line may be gone for a long time. Some have asked Hasbro if the line could return as an exclusive in some way. With New York Toy Fair coming right up I’m wondering if Hasbro would show interest in creating an Ultimate Galactic Hunt type assortment of figures, utilizing vintage style cardbacks, along side their Star Wars Episode VII packaging in 2015? We’re positive Episode VII figures will receive their own line look, but what if the first 3 Episode VII retail cases each contained 3 parallel Episode VII figures re-carded onto vintage style cardbacks (similar to what Hasbro did with the “Lost Line” look in their TVC cases just around a year ago)? Or, what if they placed 7 Episode VII figures into a special assortment featuring vintage cardbacks for the new movie characters and the other 5 figures were new or recent Black Series figures re-carded onto vintage cards to fill-out the case? Then again, if the above suggestions are not in their focus then perhaps a convention or online exclusive consisting of 7 Episode VII figures repackaged onto vintage style cards may be the way to go!

I’ve typed out some possible assortments to help verbally illustrate this idea…

Star Wars Episode VII - Ultimate Galactic Hunt Assortment Wave 1 (12 Figures)

x1 Jedi Master Luke Skywalker
x1 Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (UGH Vintage Card)
x1 Admiral Han Solo
x1 C-3PO
x1 Daughter of Admiral Han Solo
x1 Daughter of Admiral Han Solo (UGH Vintage Card)
x1 Wicket W. Warrick – Senate Representative
x1 Wicket W. Warrick – Senate Representative (UGH Vintage Card)
x1 Lenid Thane – Tyche City Commando
x1 Leia Organa Solo
x1 R2-D2
x1 Dictator Villain

Star Wars Episode VII – Vintage Carded Tribute Assortment (12 Figures)

x1 Jedi Master Luke Skywalker
x1 Admiral Han Solo
x1 Ree-Yees (Original Trilogy)
x1 C-3PO
x1 Lobot (Original Trilogy)
x1 Daughter of Admiral Han Solo
x1 Wicket W. Warrick – Senate Representative
x1 Hammerhead (Original Trilogy)
x1 Luke Skywalker - Endor Battle Poncho (Original Trilogy)
x1 Leia Organa Solo
x1 Vizam (Original Trilogy)
x1 Dictator Villain

The Episode VII cardback size will be probably be smaller in size than the TVC style as we have been seeing with their recent packaging so Hasbro may not go for it. Still, the sooner an idea like this is suggested to Hasbro the sooner they can make it a reality!

Thanks,
Scott K. (Warsaw in the Yak forums)

A: Scott, whatever has been planned for 2014 and part of 2015 has already been set in stone since last November (or even earlier). I can ask Hasbro about the resurrection of UGH or something similar, but you should know that Hasbro needs about 18 months to plan an assortment of figures and have already scheduled what we'll be seeing for the foreseeable future. I also don't know how advantageous it would be to have assortments like you suggest above. I know they're just examples, but I know that I wouldn't want OT stuff mixed in with new Episode VII stuff, but that's just me. The big issue here is that Hasbro dropped the ball by not seamlessly continuing The Vintage Collection when they had a chance (i.e. at the cancellation of Legacy Collection [2]). It would have been the most ample opportunity for them to finish up as many of the original Kenner card backs as possible while giving us some never before tackled action figures as well. That time has seemingly passed my friend, and I don't see any reasonable timeframe that we'll see a return of that beautiful line look. I am sorry but it just isn't happening unless Hasbro has a HUGE surprise up their sleeves, and frankly, I don't have an ember of faith that they're thinking much about adult collectors right now. If they were, they wouldn't be producing Telepods, Angry Birds, Saga Legends and Mission Series. But before I burst everyone's bubble, let's wait and see what Toy Fair brings us. I KNOW there will be some cool surprises, but right now don't expect to hear about the return of TVC.

That all being said, you can rest assured that I will be pleading with and begging Hasbro to find it in their hearts to return TVC to collectors ASAP, whether they're done like the VOTC/VTSC (a sub-line collection) or exclusives. Keep it here and we will reveal to you our findings. Please know you're far from alone of your desire to see nothing but TVC on pegs. Actually, you're in the minority if you feel otherwise.
