How Much Longer Will Star Wars Collecting Be This Abysmal?

Posted by Paul | May 06, 2013 at 11:18 PM ET

I have been quiet for a while now, so I feel it's time to sigh audibly enough for you to hear me again. I don't condone swearing, but my very good friend John McCartney just recently spouted "How many [expletive] The Phantom Menace figures did Hasbro make?" It wasn't meant to be humorous. And he said it expecting me to give him a straight answer, yet I found it difficult not to chuckle because his succinct assessment is really the nuts and bolts of this whole mess. I have to wonder the same exact thing.... (read more)

How can these oversaturated figures still be arriving at retail? If the line was so forward-heavy with these figures, then why not release the backlog in a reverse fashion (i.e. release the Starkiller/Vizla waves first, etc.) in an effort to finally sell through what clogged up distribution and your warehouses?

It's May 2013 and every last retail chain in my area is STILL loaded with The Phantom Menace figures. If not leftovers from January 2012, the carry-forwards have accumulated to the point where it's going to prevent any more "greatest hits" hits cases from coming into stores.

On top of that, the new product is equally disappointing. With 12" figures that look more like shampoo bottles than real 12" figures, and no 2013 basic figures gracing shelves, how can any Star Wars fan not feel somewhat depressed by the direction the line has taken?

Is anyone else worried that no American companies have begun to pre-order the Black Series and Saga Legends lines, yet European online stores are now? Will we go through the same thing again for these lines like we did for the Yoda line look. Please say it isn't so. OK, so maybe it's too early to worry, but why no ray of hope that things will be improving?

I think it's safe to assume that if we don't get some awesome new products announced at 2013's SDCC that we will reach the definitive point of no return. I do hope that good things are in store. And the rumor mills have uttered that there are. Hasbro has leaked awesome action figures to us over the years that they have admitted are coming and then denied. Hopefully they are coming.

Yak Face, Ree-Yees, Lobot, Hammerhead – we know you're all coming. It's just up to Hasbro to get you out to us. (Hasbro – don't wait for a return of TVC – because that ain't happening any time soon.)

Whatever you can do for us, Hasbro, will be appreciated. Just please get the store shelves out of the abysmal state they're in at the moment. We need an influx of new and exciting products, very similarly to the wonder years of 2006-2008.
