Research Droids Reviews: April 10, 2013 – April 23, 2013

Anakin Skywalker (Espisode III) - Mini Busts
Are we off base with our assertion that Gentle Giant Ltd. seems to pick the worst characters for exclusives? Fan favorite clones and main Jedi heroes seem to be the first choice for Gentle Giant to release as very difficult to obtain exclusives. Anakin Skywalker (Episode III) is a perfect example of this argument.... (read the full review)

Galactic Marine - Mini Busts
As Star Wars fans across the world celebrated the 30th anniversary of Star Wars in 2007, Gentle Giant Ltd. celebrated in their own special way and decided to make as many clone commanders as they could from Episode III but release them as exclusive pieces.... (read the full review)

Obi-Wan Kenobi (In Clone Trooper Armor) - Mini Busts
There are many product announcements made by Gentle Giant Ltd. in the statues line that make collectors of the Mini Busts line wish that they would make those characters in the Mini Bust format instead. Sometimes they are produced in both formats.... (read the full review)

Shock Trooper - Mini Busts
Collectors of Gentle Giant Ltd.’s prolific Mini Bust line were treated to the very first phase II clone trooper character from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith with the awesome Shock Trooper Mini Bust. A 2006 San Diego Comic Con exclusive, the Shock Trooper arrived almost a month to the day before the general release Clone Trooper Mini Busts were released to very eager collectors.... (read the full review)

Han Solo (Bespin) - Mini Busts
It’s evident by way of new product releases that there are less and less collectors supporting the hobby. About a half decade ago, any Mini Bust with an edition size of 2000 pieces or less would begin collectors foaming at the mouth trying to track it down.... (read the full review)

Princess Leia Organa (Hoth) - Mini Busts
It took long enough for Gentle Giant Ltd. to produce characters from The Empire Strikes Back in the Mini Bust line, didn’t it? But now Princess Leia Organa (Hoth) gets released alongside a complimentary Princess Leia Organa (Mynock Hunt) inspired Mini Bust (they’re almost identical except fro a few key features).... (read the full review)

Chewbacca (Mynock Hunt) - Mini Busts
If there was any doubt to what the correct source to 2006’s Chewbacca Mini Bust was, all collectors need to do is look at 2008’s Chewbacca (Mynock Hunt) Mini Bust. Chewbacca’s hair for the most part was slicked back in Episode IV and it wasn’t until Episode V that we started to see him let his hair down a bit and portray a more flyaway look.... (read the full review)

IG-88 - Mini Busts
What does it take to make a great Mini Bust? The answer is quite simple: Just make a bounty hunter and it will be a guaranteed sell! Gentle Giant however made collectors wait a little too long until they brought the second bounty hunter from The Empire Strikes Back into the Mini Bust line.... (read the full review)

Boba Fett - Mini Busts
Boba Fett is the most notorious bounty hunter in the entire galaxy. And Gentle Giant Ltd. made the most notorious collectible interpretation of him in their popular Mini Bust line. Gentle Giant’s direction for the Mini Bust line was a little unclear right from the beginning.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader - Mini Busts
Darth Vader was the very first Original Trilogy Mini Bust created by Gentle Giant Ltd. And it goes without saying that it was probably the greatest first character choice to make in this very popular line. What makes the piece especially exciting is that Darth Vader is based after his appearance in The Empire Strikes Back and not A New Hope.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) - Mini Busts
The Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) Mini Bust was a foreshadowing of sorts. It took “parts” of two upcoming Mini Busts at the time and amalgamated them together to make a very cool Convention Exclusive.... (read the full review)

Han Solo (In Stormtrooper Disguise) - Mini Busts
What good is the Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) Mini Bust without the Han Solo (In Stormtrooper Disguise) Mini Bust? Apparently he isn’t much good at all. Thankfully Gentle Giant Ltd. noted this and secretly began work on Han Solo right around the same time they began working on the 2004 San Diego Comic Con exclusive Luke Skywalker piece and reserved it for a Collector’s Club Edition Exclusive early the next year.... (read the full review)

Plo Koon - Mini Busts
While most collectors wait for the main characters to get released in a given high-end collectibles line, there is a smaller subset of fans that prefer to get the “B”, “C” and/or “D” list characters first. The latter would probably apply to us, especially in the case of striking Jedi and other alien characters.... (read the full review)

Qui-Gon Jinn - Mini Busts
It escapes us how collector response to some of the most incredible looking Mini Bust likenesses fly under the radar. When the Qui-Gon Jinn Mini Bust was released in the summer of 2006, collectors purchased it without question, but it received very few accolades by those that did indeed purchase it....
