Research Droids Reviews: March 27, 2013 – April 9, 2013

Chewbacca - Mini Busts
If there is one Star Wars character that collectors clamor for the most, Chewbacca has got to be on the top of the list. Interestingly, many licenses don’t like touching Chewbacca with a ten foot pole because they’re unsure how to develop the product.... (read the full review)

C-3PO - Mini Busts
If there is one thing that Star Wars collectors want in any collectible format it’s the core characters from the films. We identify the key characters as Star Wars so it makes complete sense why we want them first in any given collectibles line.... (read the full review)

Luke Sywalker (In X-wing Fighter Gear) - Mini Busts
The Luke Skywalker (In X-wing Fighter Gear) Mini Bust was a welcomed surprise into the line. It not only brought a rather fantastic interpretation of Luke Skywalker during the Battle of Yavin, but it also indirectly introduced a line of one-sixth scaled helmets, the Star Wars Armory line, that eventually was aborted/cancelled because Gentle Giant Ltd. feared it would be too much competition with an already established line.... (read the full review)

Grand Moff Tarkin - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. took an all-new approach to their Mini Busts when they decided to add Grand Moff Tarkin to the line. Instead of developing a “simple” Mini Bust from the waist up, they added a diorama like quality to him instead.... (read the full review)

Princess Leia Organa (A New Hope) - Mini Busts
Do you find it as surprising as us that Gentle Giant Ltd. waited so long to being collectors an Episode IV version of Princess Leia into the Mini Bust line? No one may ever find out the reason why she wasn’t at the top of their list, but ultimately she was released and the Mini Bust is done very well. Her likeness averages anywhere between good and excellent.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker & Yoda - Premium Format Figures
Sideshow Collectibles proves again and again just how committed they are to bringing the absolute highest quality Star Wars collectibles to the market. From the introductory Luke Skywalker from Episode IV, to their very first Prequel Trilogy character, General Grievous, Sideshow Collectibles doesn’t show any signs of stopping what their effortlessly doing so well right now.... (read the full review)

Princess Leia Organa - Premium Format Figures
The Premium Format Figures line is the perfect way for Sideshow Collectibles to showcase a Star Wars character. Not only does it realize the character in a much larger scale than collectors have been accustomed to, it brings the details, silhouettes and accessories of these characters with amazing detail and in a very high quality platform.... General Grievous - Premium Format Figures
Some scoff at the Premium Format Figures line and claim that they’re just fancy statues with soft-goods. But we would scoff back and say how egregiously incorrect that assessment is. While it’s hard to call anything made from polystone something other than a statue, Sideshow Collectibles has found ways to take this medium and craft it into something so incredible that the word “statue” would almost come across as an insult.... Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Padawan) - Order Of The Jedi - 1:6 Scale Figures
The bar has been raised once again. You might tire of us saying the latest 1:6 Scale Figure from Sideshow Collectibles is better than the next, but it’s true from so many vantage points. Let’s dig right into this. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Padawan) is the consummate Jedi figure. If you’ve been collecting Sideshow Collectibles since the beginning, this latest release is going to be bittersweet at best for you.... (read the full review)

Nien Nunb - Mini Busts
Don’t you wish you could alter time or speed up the harvests? When you’re a Star Wars collector, sometimes it’s especially hard to keep up with your collection, especially if you manage multiple formats across multiple licensees. To make things even more arduous for us, Gentle Giant Ltd. is making the smallest edition size runs on their most recent Mini Busts.... (read the full review)

Kit Fisto - Mini Busts
There is a primary rule that Mini Bust collectors forget to follow and that would be to never judge a Mini Bust until you have the production piece in hand. If we followed this rule we might add a few years of happy blissfulness to our lives. If there was one Mini Bust that sent collectors’ tops blowing through the roofs it would have to be Kit Fisto.... (read the full review)

Wicket W. Warrick - Mini Busts
Wait. This Mini Bust was released?! Wicket W. Warrick was a blink and you’ll miss it Mini Bust. Arriving right at Christmastime 2011, the very first Ewok Mini Bust made fans of Return Of The Jedi very, very happy. Many collectors won’t admit they like Ewoks, but they do.... (read the full review)

Muftak And Kabe - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. certainly appears to emulate many of the things Hasbro has done in the 3.75” action figure line and apply it to their Mini Busts line. In 1998, Hasbro released the excellent Kabe And Muftak Internet Exclusive two-pack.... (read the full review)

Infantry Battle Droid - Mini Busts
The Battle Droid is probably the only Mini Bust in Gentle Giant Ltd.’s entire line that nearly killed collectors with anticipation. Announced and put up for pre-order way back in 2009, it didn’t see release until February of 2012. The excuses for the delays were many, but it didn’t seem like Gentle Giant had a good grasp on how to approach this piece from the start.... (read the full review)
