Research Droids Reviews: February 27, 2013 – March 12, 2013

Darth Vader - OTC - Basic (OTC #29)
Hasbro knows all too well that they can sell is a bridge if they package it the right way. They know our impulses and what makes us tick. And they feed that our addiction rather well. Because Hasbro was designing a basic figure line of Star Wars characters based solely on the Original Trilogy films, it made sense that they would find three ways to release Darth Vader (one for each film).... Obi-Wan Kenobi - OTC - Basic (OTC #15)
In 2004 Hasbro made one of the most collector-friendly lines to date. The Original Trilogy Collection cleverly borrowed elements of the original vintage Kenner figures most of us grew up with as children while dedicating almost all of the line for Original Trilogy characters, just as the name suggests.... C-3PO - OTC - Basic (OTC #13)
There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to The Original Trilogy Collection C-3PO figure. Sure, it’s just a repack of 1998’s POTF2 C-3PO (Millennium Minted Coin) figure (which was subsequently repacked in 2004’s SW Hall Of Fame line as well), but it actually is a kit-bashed figure and not all-new which many collectors to this date erroneously believe.... Greedo - OTC - Basic (OTC #22)
Every time we write in a review that it’s the paint job that often makes or breaks a figure, we receive feedback from readers who completely (and vehemently) disagree with that sentiment. We’re not so sure how that statement of ours elicits so much negative passion, but it does. That won’t stop us from continuing to say it however.... (read the full review)

Bossk - OTC - Basic (OTC #28)
Hasbro had to cut the final phase of the Star Wars “Saga” line a little bit short to make way for the upcoming The Original Trilogy Collection. Often having to work within Lucasfilm Ltd.’s timeframe, Hasbro sometimes has to work double time to stay on target with Lucasfilm’s demands.... (read the full review)

IG-88 - OTC - Basic (OTC #27)
Out of all six bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back Executor meeting scene, only IG-88 and Bossk were the lucky ones to be chosen for the collector-focused The Original Trilogy Collection line. This collection of figures with packaging inspired from the classic card back from the vintage Kenner era was a sudden announcement by Hasbro and they only had a few short months to organize it and get product out to the market in time for the first time release of the Original Trilogy on DVD later in the 2004 year.... TIE Fighter Pilot - OTC - Basic (OTC #21)
One figure that’s always looked really good in any Hasbro line is the TIE Fighter Pilot. Whether we’re talking about 1996’s POTF2 version or 2004’s SW “Saga” version, Hasbro has always shown the different sculpts justice, but always miss the mark in one way or another that prevent sit from reaching definitive status. Hasbro came much closer with the release of the 2004 version.... (read the full review)

Lando Calrissian - OTC - Basic (OTC #32)
If you were a kid in the early 80s, you probably remember getting a ton of Kenner Star Wars toys inspired from Return Of The Jedi for Christmas in 1983. Hasbro introduced over a dozen of new characters for the Star Wars basic figure line that year, but they also introduced a the concept of removable helmets that would inevitably become one of the most popular features of basic figures for years to come.... 501st Legion Clone Trooper - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW06)
In a world of excellence, all great things must come to end. But we don’t think any of us were prepared to say goodbye to the animated The Clone Wars line as abruptly as we did. Whether or not we can wholly blame Hasbro for this action is murky at best because Hasbro was fighting against Lucasfilm’s unending shuffling of schedules which in turn made new line looks either cancelled or tremendously abbreviated.... Obi-Wan Kenobi - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW01)
Third time is always the charm isn’t it? When the looks of the three main Republic heroes changed in Season 3 of The Clone Wars, Hasbro was quick to update the revised likenesses for the basic figure line up. In 2011, the “Shadow Of The Dark Side” phase brought us new takes on Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano and Obi-Wan Kenobi.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW05)
One of the biggest and unannounced surprises of the “Shadow of The Dark Side” The Clone Wars line was the inclusion of an animated-styled astromech Build A Droid figure. It was so surprising I fact that it bordered on shocking. Plo Koon’s astromech droid R7-D4 (CW64) was not only an all-new sculpt, but it was based on the conceptual design of the very popular Build A Droid astromech figures from The Legacy Collection and Legacy Collection basic figure lines where the figure could be cobbled together from separate parts.... Anakin Skywalker - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW03)
Just like 2013’s The Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi (CW03) figure, it can be said of Anakin Skywalker that third time is the charge for him too. We’ll warn you right up front that some testy collectors will be referring to this action figure as “large head” Anakin Skywalker, but the size of his cranium isn’t exaggerated enough for us not to consider him the definitive update to the “Episode III” version of Anakin Skywalker from the animated The Clone Wars television show.... (read the full review)

Captain Rex - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW04)
The outcries from the collecting community were thunderous when we discovered that Hasbro was going to be “dumbing down” the articulation in The Clone Wars line. Long awaited figures in the 2012 line including Captain Rex (CW13) (in his Phase II armor), Clone Commander Fox (CW18) and Clone Commander Wolffe (CW17) had been designed to come without wrist and knee articulation which perplexed and angered longtime collectors of The Clone Wars basic figure line.... Darth Maul - SW [Y/AOTC] - The Clone Wars (CW08)
One of the nicest products from the 2012 Star Wars [The Phantom Menace 3D] line look that even arrived in a timely fashion was the Darth Maul Returns TARGET exclusive Battle Packs set. Not only did it contain a long-awaited repack (don’t go there with regards to the missing lightsaber), it contained two all-new sculpts: a brilliant version of an animated cyborg Darth Maul and a controversial Nightsister that some defer calling a realistic interpretation of Mother Talzin while other just call it a Hasbro concept....
