Research Droids Reviews: November 7, 2012 – November 20, 2012

Aurra Sing - Mini Busts
You know something? Gentle Giant, Ltd. needs to be really carefully with what images they show to solicit their products. This is especially true for their surprisingly impressive Aurra Sing Mini Bust. If you judged this piece from the preliminary solicitation materials to promote the product, you would probably be swayed to keep it out of your collection.... (read the full review)

Cad Bane - Maquettes
It goes without saying that Gentle Giant, Ltd. is a purveyor of excellent high-end Star Wars collectibles. They focus on formats with repeat hits and one of their more popular line, the Star Wars and Clone Wars Maquettes took a slight change in direction beginning in 2008.... (read the full review)

Jocasta Nu - TVC - Basic (Exclusive)
Did it take an army or a miracle to finally bring Jocasta Nu to collectors? Perhaps it was a little bit of both. Always a top ranking Fans’ Choice candidate, Hasbro nearly scoffed for the last couple of years at the idea of making her as an action figure in their popular 3.75” line.... (read the full review)

Lando Calrissian - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
When the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line was announced, many of us wondered how far Gentle Giant, Ltd. would take it. Would they be focusing on the “12 Backs” or would they open it up to all characters originally released by Kenner between 1978 and 1985. Well, it looks as if their plans are much bigger than we anticipated.... (read the full review)

Death Squad Commander - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
Ah, the infamously notorious Death Squad Commander. At least one Star Wars licensee can get it right, huh?! Then again, the whole point of this line is make larger replicas of those classic vintage Kenner action figures from the wonderful classic period between 1978 and 1985, so there's not much artistic license that needed to be taken here at all. In the neo-classic collecting era however, the Death Squad Commander is not been so easy to recreate and licensees like Hasbro have made murky interpretations of it at best.... (read the full review)

Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
“Just like you remember them, only bigger” seems to be the tag line of the year for vintage Star Wars collectors. Arguably one of the most ingenious high-end collectibles line of our time, Gentle Giant Ltd. has found a way to bring something new to something old. (Still, there are some collectors out there that don’t see the need for large sized vintage Kenner Star Wars action figures.).... (read the full review)

Jawa - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
When the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line was announced, speculation instantly ran rampant and collectors wondered how Gentle Giant, Ltd. would deal with the running changes from the classic Kenner line. They wasted little time exploring candidates that fit this bill and quickly issued both the vinyl cape Jawa and cloth cape Jawa (the former is a PGM exclusive).... (read the full review)

501st Legion Trooper [Version 1] - TAC - Saga Legends
Not too many collectors can argue against the fact that 2007 was indeed a banner year, if not the year, for them. Hasbro created a knock-it-out-of-the-park collection to celebrate 30 incredible years of Star Wars. The collection included a killer 3.75” basic figure line which included a McQuarrie homage-paying sub-line.... (read the full review)

R4-I9 - TAC - Saga Legends
OK, let’s clear this up right now. R4-I9 and R4-D6 are two different characters, but they look identical to each other. R4-I9 is the R4 unit on the first Death Star and R4-D6 is the R4 unit in the Massassi Temple during the Battle of Yavin. One fights alongside the Rebel Alliance and one follows the call of the Galactic Empire. In the Hasbro line, R4-I9 gets two chances at retail but both times Hasbro screwed up its color.... (read the full review)

RA-7 - TAC - Saga Legends
The 2007 TAC Saga Legends line was developed for collectors. You know the drill. Hasbro needed to create a sub-line to keep core characters and army builders in the line “at all times” without taking up space in the main basic figure line, but they also solicited collector feedback to bring some obscure characters back into the line all thanks to a Fans’ Choice poll.... (read the full review)

Saesee Tiin - TAC - Saga Legends
When Revenge Of The Sith came to be in 2005, Hasbro released one of their most aggressive basic figure lines based on a Star Wars film ever. The Revenge Of The Sith toy line was as equally exciting as Episode III the film and some of the coolest action figures made by Hasbro were developed for both kids and collectors. Keep in mind that half of the basic figure line was geared towards the kids.... (read the full review)

Sandtrooper [Sergeant - Version 1] - TAC - Saga Legends
In 2007, it was almost hard to decide which collection of Star Wars figures to be more excited about: the basic figure line or the supplemental Saga Legends line. While this may seem ridiculous to you, the newly dubbed Saga Legends sub-line was a very exciting basic figure lineup during its first couple of years. Some great characters were included in the line and the packaging was nice as well.... (read the full review)

Sand People - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
The Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line by Gentle Giant Ltd. in our opinion is one of the most clever high-end collectibles ever introduced to Star Wars fans. Some people don’t like the multiplied scale, but we find it hard to believe that all who collected the vintage line wouldn’t like to study the amplified details of the action figures we grew up with during our childhood.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
Is there any figure that we wanted more as kids than Darth Vader? First released in Kenner’s Star Wars line in 1978, it could easily be the symbol of Star Wars collecting. The awesome action figure was taller than the regular male “human” figures in the line like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. What’s more, he came with a black vinyl cape that had enough pliability to be configured in a few different ways for some cool versatility.... (read the full review)
