Super Battle Droid

programmed to destroy

model: b2 battle droid

weapon: built-in blaster cannon

first used: at the battle of geonosis

The tough, deadly and durable super battle droids are used by Separatist forces in battle. The manufacturers of battle droids corrected those droids’ shortcomings to create a more powerful and much deadlier version. These droid armies clash with the clone troopers throughout the galaxy.

If you talk to any fan of Revenge Of The Sith, one thing they’ll likely agree on is that the Battle of Kashyyyk wasn’t nearly long enough. And to be honest, we have to agree with this opinion. Whether we were misinformed by Lucasfilm Ltd. or if we just had higher expectations about what we were exactly going to see, the scenes on Kashyyyk just didn’t meaure up to what was alluded by George Lucas. After all, he always wanted a Wookiee battle in one of his films. In a roundabout way, Hasbro sort of made up for this by producing a few extra figure based on that famed Battle of Kashyyyk, although these characters weren’t seen in the film. Part of the Hasbro Universe, both The Saga Collection Super Battle Droid (SAGA 061) and Battle Droids (SAGA 062) are two awesome representations of what two unique members of the Separartist Droid Army would have looked like if we were fortunate to see them in the battle. The Super Battle Droid is the same old sculpt we have seen for years already, but now it comes in a fancy camouflage deco specific to Kashyyyk.

With a noncommittal bio on the card back, Hasbro doesn’t seem to want to be held accountable that these are the Super Battle Droids from Kashyyyk, but collectors and fans will likely easily figure this out. It is our opinion Hasbro was inspired by their smaller scaled Star Wars Unleashed line and wanted to translate the theme into basic figure scale. This particular Super Battle Droid truly has a stunning paint job and has quickly become one of our favorites so far in the line. Hasbro came up with a great color palette here for these droids and if we didn’t know better, we would have sworn we had seen them in Episode III at some point. The most unfortunate thing about this figure, however, is the legs are poorly made and come without the required articulation to prevent it from leaning forward (and off to your right – its left). With a primarily beige body color, you’ll find the droid strewn with smacks of forest green as well as a subtle but beautifully realistic dirty wash. It’s a droid that is colorful yet seemingly appears to blend into the Kashyyyk backdrop very well.

The nice thing about this figure is that you don’t have to relegate it to just a Kashyyyk diorama. The droid’s “jungle” camouflage color will work well for any other “green” format you’re trying to achieve for display purposes. The sad thing is however is that Hasbro may likely never revisit this figure when a more superior Super Battle Droid body is created. This is one of the few shames about Repack & Repaint waves. Many are usually “one-off” figures that Hasbro may have been itching to release at some point as a trial basis and not something they’re too serious about for the basic figure line. So it’s unlikely this deco will be revisited ever again. As mentioned before, the same design and color palette was used for a The Saga Collection TARGET exclusive Unleashed Battle Packs set which also incorporates many of the characters we did see in Revenge Of The Sith. Hasbro appeared to really want to give this version of the Super Battle Droid its day in the sun. But that sun has set and we hope you’ve enjoyed it, because it likely won’t be seen in any light again. We would love to see these colors and styles redone on better sculpt however. Hopefully that will happen one day.
